Several days later, they returned home a little earlier than they had planned. As they drove back to their hometown, John and Mary noticed smoke and went to see what it was. They found a house was on fire. "Oh, well, it isn't our house. Let's go home," Mary said.

But John drove closer and screamed in surprise，"That's Jordan's home. He works in a factory. He wouldn't be off work yet. Maybe there is something we can do to help."

"It has nothing to do with us," cried Mary. "You have your good clothes on, so let's not get any closer."

John didn't listen to Mary. He drove up and stopped. They were both shocked to see the whole house was on fire. A woman was crying in the yard, "The children! Get the children!"

John seized her by the shoulder and shouted to her, "Don't cry! Tell me where the children are!" "In the basement(地下室)，"cried the woman, "down the hall and to the left."

John used water to get his clothes wet and put a wet towel on his head before rushing to the basement. The house was full of smoke and fire, and it was very difficult for him to find the children. But he made it. He held one under each arm. As he left，he could hear some more crying. He took the two kids out of the house and into the fresh air，and then asked the women how many more children were still down there.

"Flora, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let's get a move on," said Flora's mom. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Flora asked her parents, "Are you serious about working today? Isn't Labor Day a holiday?"

"Yes, Flora. It is," replied her dad. "But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was observed in the first place."

As the class was dismissed, Anjali hurried over to Deepak. When she finally made eye contact with him, he purposely looked away and walked off. The next day at school, Anjali overheard Deepak whispering to Mary. "People are only interested because she's the only girl in tabla class and they want her to feel special. She's not that good—" Anjali was furious. She excused herself and went to the bathroom. She took some deep breaths but couldn't relax. Her heart was pounding:

"It's not my fault that people make a big deal about a girl playing tabla. I make mistakes too, but I work really hard. Maybe he should too. He should be less mean and practice more."

"If I play in this concert, no one will talk to me again. He will turn everyone against me."

Stepping out of the bathroom, Anjali saw some inspiring posters on the wall.

After the recital, Deepak walked up to Anjali. 

As a student in the sixth grade, I started to observe how my peers were beginning to form distinct social groups. I was uncertain about where I fit in and found it challenging to find my place among them.

Our teacher had introduced a unique assignment for the week: "secret friends." She wrote each student's name on a separate piece of paper, placed them in a glass container, and had us draw one without looking. The name we drew represented a classmate whom we were to support and befriend secretly over the course of the week. By the middle of the week, the assignment had evolved into a competition among us to determine whose secret friend would provide the most impressive gift. We left cards, pens, and even money for each other. It appeared that everyone was receiving thoughtful presents from their secret friends, except for me.

On the final morning of our assignment, I entered the classroom and found a package waiting for me. Upon unwrapping it, I discovered a box of powder inside. The girls nearby laughed at my gift, which was made worse by the fact that the powder had already been opened.

I attempted to put the embarrassing incident behind me, but during a break, when I was in the restroom, the same girls who had witnessed my reaction began to gossip about the poor choice of gift from my secret friend. In a moment of weakness, I joined in on the ridicule. "How thoughtless," I heard myself say, "What could my friend have been thinking to give me such a useless gift? My grandmother wouldn't even want it." The girls laughed at my comments and quickly left the restroom. I stayed behind to wash my hands, letting the water flow through my fingers as I reflected on my words. It wasn't characteristic of me to speak so harshly about someone else's intentions.

The next day at the preserve, when they hid behind some brush, Gladys spotted a great egret! "That was my gift to you," Gladys whisper-shouted with an I'm-going-to-win-this tone. "Like I would've missed that giant bird," Calvin protested. Suddenly, birds exploded above Calvin's head. Thunk! He fell down onto his back. Gladys rushed toward him, helped him up and advised, "Here's a tip: try being OUIET."

That evening, a large bird landed on Calvin's neighbor's tree. Calvin focused the binoculars. The bird had a bright red eye, a thick straight bill, a white throat and breast, and—oh, wow—long, thin, white feathers on the back of its head. "A black-crowned night heron!" he whispered excitedly. He was completely absorbed in his observation.

As the week went by, competition became fierce. Calvin had to win this contest. But chance seemed so slim! Then he remembered that he had found a feather that Autumn thought belonged to a Cooper's hawk close enough. He marked it, plus a few extra birds. What was the difference? He had seen them in the past, or he would see them eventually. He swallowed (吞咽) hard. No one will know the truth.

On the last day of Big Week, Autumn waved Gladys's checklist in the air. "Twenty-six is the number to beat. Anybody else?"
