    Americans love sports--they love to play them, to watch them on television, and to talk about them. But this hobby sometimes has serious results-- at least to the players. For example, when people play tennis, sometimes they hurt their elbows(肘部) and in this way they develop "tennis elbow". Also it is easy to hurt a knee in a football game. These injuries happen while the player is having fun, but they still hurt.

    A few months ago Kathleen Simmons, who loves playing volleyball, hurt her knee in a volleyball game. Her doctor told her that she needed a very difficult operation(手术) or she might not be able to play again. She felt very sad and didn't know what to do.

    Then Simmons learned about "video operation". Simmons found a hospital that was using this new science and went to see the doctor there. The doctors told her the operation could help.

    For this operation, her doctor didn't have to open her knee. Instead he put a very small camera lens(镜头)inside her knee. The lens sent back pictures, which appeared on a television screen. As he worked, he could see the inside of her knee on the TV. With the help of the large pictures on the screen, the doctor knew exactly what to do when he was making the repairs.

    Simmons started walking five days after her operation. Now, six months after her operation, Simmons can do everything she did before her injury. She can play volleyball again."

    Different people have different hobbies. Some like growing flowers, some like singing and others like building model ships. I'm interested in stamps and started to collect them in 2008.

    My father works in a big company. He always goes abroad. Eight years ago, when he was working in America, he sent home a letter with a beautiful stamp on the envelope(信封). I liked the stamp very much. From then on I have always asked my father to send me different stamps from different countries. Later I joined a club and I have made many friends there. They helped me learn more about stamps and always traded(交换) stamps with me. And I got some special stamps from them.

    Now I have more than a thousand stamps. When I look through these beautiful stamps, I feel relaxed and happy. I can enjoy the beautiful designs of stamps.

    We are a bit afraid when we talk about the A/H1N1 flu(甲型H1N1流感).

    Flu

    The A/H1N1 flu sounds really scary and some people died of it. ⑶It is difficult for us to stop it. But it works like other kinds of flu. We catch it in the same way, and we can protect ourselves from the flu in some similar ways.

    ★Pandemic(大流行病)

    The A/H1N1 flu is a pandemic. ⑷The word "|pandemic" sounds like millions of people might die. But that's not what it means at all!

    The pandemic spreads(传播)over a whole country or the whole world. It doesn't mean a high death rate(比率), but just only large groups of people in the world may get it.

    Mask(口罩)

    A mask just keeps a person from breathing in the virus(病毒)that might be breathed out by someone. Wearing a mask isn't a bad idea, but it doesn't mean that the flu is much more dangerous than other kinds of flu.

 On May 12,2008,a magitude-8.0 earthquake hit Wenchuan,Niu Yu,an11-year-old girl,lost her right leg in the disaster.

 The first time I removed the outer prosthesis(假肢) around my leg, I was so1 that my whole body was shaking. At that moment, I remembered lying in the hospital, looking at the ceiling(天花板), but seeing only2 . I had no idea what a prosthetic leg was. All I knew was that I wouldn't be able to run anymore. 

 As it turned out, I felt sad for years. I wanted to be a"normal" girl, but it seemed 3 . I did anything I could to hide. But one day, my father told me something I'll never 4 : If you want to live a good life, you must 5 your body as it is. 

 My 6 only grew when I took part in for a teaching program in Tibet. And I started running again. In 2018, I ran Wenchuan's half marathon. After I ran to the finishing line, I pulled off the outer cover and showed my prosthetic leg— it was so cool!

 In October 2021, I was invited to walk in a show in Shanghai. I'd never received any training before, 7 I was nervous when I stepped out onto the runway, prosthetic leg first. Then, I remembered a 8 I'd received from a fan. She told me that her dream was to become a model, but losing a leg made it impossible. She had seen many disabled models abroad, but she had9 seen one in China. 

 Suddenly, I felt powerful. I realized that I was standing on that runway not just as myself, but as someone who stood for everyone that was just like me. I was there not to look 10 , I was there for me— and them— to feel seen.
