When I was 20 years old, I had a big dream in my mind. I wanted {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (travel) around Africa with my backpack. So I left my hometown with confidence(信心) and arrived {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Cape Town, not really sure what to do next. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (lucky), before my trip started, I met a kind; old Nigerian man. He gave me the {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (good) travel advice I had ever received: "Be like a student on your way around the world."

The advice sounded simple, but {#blank#}5{#/blank#} really changed my idea about traveling. He helped me realize that travel is about {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (learn) cultures. It's far too easy to go into {#blank#}7{#/blank#} new country and believe your ways are better.

"But if you. study, ask questions, and try to learn from the locals, you {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (have) far richer experience," he promised.

After seven {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (month) of full backpacking in Africa from Cape Town to Cairo, I realized having a student-like mind helped me learn a lot, which {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (satisfy) me more than any other trip that ever did to me.

For about three years now, I have been writing poetry. It was not until my junior year in high school that I developed an interest, love and skill for writing poetry. 

Back in elementary school, I loved to write stories. I would write stories on post-it notes and anywhere I could. Yet when I had to write a limerick(五行打油诗) for an assignment, I could not wrap my head around poetry. I had a very hard time figuring out how to rhyme words and have the words make sense. I eventually tossed the paper with the attempted limerick in the trash. I did not try my hand at poetry again until several years later. 

Many years later in my freshman year of high school, my English teacher gave my class a poetry project as an assignment. I still remember my limerick assignment and was afraid of doing the poetry project. For the project, we had to analyse a poem and write a response to it. I chose to respond to Robert Frost's poem Fire and Ice. I also wrote my own poem first. I became really excited when writing the poem. 

Two years later, I started writing poetry as a hobby and for fun. To learn how good or bad my poems were, I handed them in to some magazines and contests. I won the second place in the North Carolina Poetry Society's Sherry Pruitt Award Contest, and had my two poems published as high quality poems. I have continued to write poetry, and have even self-published three collections of poetry in both print and e-book formats, which can be found in my store on Lulu. 

Now, I love writing poetry, but I don't hate writing short stories. I just find it more difficult and not my style of writing, even though I still write short stories occasionally. 

"I'm going to play basketball, Daddy." Lauren flew into my arms when I came in from work. "That's 1 , honey," I replied naturally. I thought she meant outside the house—on the driveway. Into the kitchen, my wife Helen's silence indicated I had 2 something. After a while, she spoke slowly, "Lauren is joining the girls' high-school basketball team."

I 3 my girl's sportsmanlike courage, but 4 was still in my stomach. Lauren was only just 1.55m tall. 5 legs and a heavy body were surely a(n) 6 for her in playing basketball.

Finally, the game day arrived. Lauren and her teammates moved out. Their game faces seemed 7 to win. At first, though not playing, Lauren followed the movement on the court and 8 every play. I could even 9 her shout "No way!" when a referee made an unfair call against a teammate. Sitting on the sidelines, Lauren still enjoyed the game very much.

Suddenly, the announcer's voice boomed, "Number thirty-three, Lauren Wray, in." My heart 10 wildly. What if she got injured or other girls on the team made fun of her? But what I saw was that Lauren made every effort to keep pace with the others. Just before the end of the game, they 11 the ball to Lauren. She caught it. She shot. 12 she scored!

The audience began clapping and 13 . Lauren's brown eyes shone as she wiped her sweaty forehead. Lauren's uplifting spirits and impressive performance, wrapped in a small 14 , struck everyone greatly. I felt enormously 15 to have Lauren as my daughter.

Discovering a hobby can lead to amazing results, as Maria Martinez, an 11-year-old with a heart of gold, has proven.

Just over a year ago, Maria came across the world of clothes-making, thanks to one of the Christmas gifts she received. Little did she know that this newfound ability would become a source of joy and purpose, not just for her, but also for countless furry friends.

"I got a gift permitChristmas to start clothes-making lessons," Maria said. "I really liked it."

After mastering the basics, an idea came to her mind during a visit to a local exhibition. Surrounded by pet owners and their pets, Maria had an idea that would change lives. Why not create lovely bandannas (头巾) for dogs and cats and use them to support animal shelters?

With great interest and the support of her grandmother, Maria turned a corner of their home into a busy working room. Together, they made many beautiful bandannas, each one filled with love and care.

But Maria's wish went far beyond creating decorations. She began donating her works to shelters like Claws Forever in Fall River, hoping to catch the eye of some people who can take these dogs and cats home.

Maria also began selling them through word-of-mouth and at various events. "At first she started just donating the bandannas because it took her much time to make them. Then she got more skilled and was able to buy cloth with some extra income that she was making from it," her mom, Crystal, said. "Maria is a really kind giving person and she doesn't want for much of anything. It makes her feel good to donate. We are proud of her." Ranging from $3 to $7, money from her sales is now donated to shelters, too. A few weeks ago, she donated more than $200 to the Kingston Animal Shelter.

"They were happy and really grateful, which made me feel really good inside," said Maria. "It makes me happy to see how it's impacted the people and dogs."

Have you ever had a day when everything seemed to go wrong, and nothing seemed to go right? Not too long ago I was having one of those days. I was discouraged, weary, and 1 sad. My focus was on me, me, me. After all, no one else was experiencing the same 2 as I was. 

I expressed my depressed 3 to my mother. She didn't offer any comfort; 4 . she said, "I heard Jamie was having a difficult day too. Why don't you make her some 5 and we'll take them to her this afternoon?"

I didn't really intend to, but I was bound to because I was 6 to go back to my other problems just yet. I made some and 7 them on a little plate. Then I made a card with a sunflower on it and wrote a small note of empathy. 

That afternoon we 8 my friend's house. I went to the door and 9 the bell. Soon Jamie came to the door and looked at me in 10 for the unexpected visit. Before she could say anything, I 11 , "I heard you were having a hard day and decided to bring you something. I hope your day goes better. " The look that 12 Jamie's face was one that I could never put into words. It was as if a darkened sky was suddenly 13 with the golden rays of the sun; it was as if in that small act, her day was brightened. 

I got back into the car and for some 14 reason, I felt a lot better myself somehow. That day I experienced the truth that James Barrie attempted to describe: "The guys who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot 15 it from themselves. "
