My son, Kevin, loved wrestling (摔跤运动) as he was growing up. When he entered high school, he showed a lot of athletic ability. Even as a freshman wrestler, we could see the hope of his future, and he went on to improve each year. As a senior, he'd become the leader of a team that set an unbelievable record. Just as we expected, he went into the state tournament (锦标赛). 

Then he won four matches and ranked number one. Here we were, in the finals of the state tournament, ready to win our championship—we still didn't have a state championship when his high school career was over. 

Unluckily, his last match didn't go well! I felt terrible, and I was unwilling to accept what had just happened and unable to believe it. I painfully watched Kevin as he shook hands with his opponent (对手) and stood calmly as the judge raised his opponent's hand in victory. Then he quietly walked out of the gym. 

A few weeks later, I received a letter from Kevin's school. In the letter, the principal praised Kevin's devotion to his team, his respect to his opponents and his spirit of competition. After I read this, I cried. 

For years, I had watched every single match where Kevin had wrestled in high school, but I hadn't noticed all the outstanding qualities that his principal (校长) mentioned. I always focused on the wins. And when he didn't get that final win, I was especially hurt and disappointed. I'd failed to realize that Kevin was working hard to achieve victories, but always performing with character no matter whether he won or lost. 

At that moment, my son became my mentor (导师). He taught me that winners in life appreciate the pursuit more than the victory itself.

②Alphorns(阿尔卑斯长号角) were once used to communicate in the mountains in Switzerland. They are very long and they are very heavy, too. So, alpharns are hard work to blow. Then why use them? Well,they make a loud sound which travels much further than the human voice. Herdsmen(牧民) used them to call cows in the distance for milking. At sunset, alpharns were also used to send a message down to villagers that all was well. These days, they're mostly used as musical instruments.

③The people ofLa Gomera, an island in Europe, have their own special way of sending messages from mountain to mountain. They use a whistled(口哨的) language called el silbo, which comes from their language . Spanish. Whistling can be heard within five kilometers, which means it can be used across much greater distances than shouting. El silbo can be used for all kinds of messages, including greetings and announcements. El si lbo is used a lot less than it used to be, but primary school students in La Gomera have to leave it.

④Did you know it's also possible to send messages without making a noise? This is called visual communication, and it includes the use of flags and even smoke. Long ago, soldiers along the Great Wall of China used smoke as a warning. If they noticed the enemy from their signal(信号) tower, they li t a smoky fire. When soldiers in other towers saw the smoke signal, they lit fires too. In this way, messages about the enemy's arrival could travel as far as 800 km in just a few hours.

According to the Chinese lunar calendar* , 12 animals mark 12 different years-rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pip. Your year of birth decides your zodiac. Some people believe that people born under the same zodiac share similar characteristics*. Here are some zodiac signs and their characteristics. 

The ox is the second animal in the Chinese zodiac. In one folk story(民间传说), all of the animals held a race to choose the 12 animals of the zodiac. The ox was in the first place. But it didn't see a rat on its back. When the ox was close to the finishing line, the rat jumped down and became the winner!It is believed that people born in the Year of the Ox are patient and hard-working! But they can be stubborn* sometimes. 

It is said that people born in the Year of the Dragon are creative, confident, outgoing and quick-tempered(性急的). They also like to help others. They're warm-hearted so that they may have many friends. 

Chinese people believe that those who are born in the Year of the Rooster are active. They also like to be the center of attention and always look beautiful. They are the happiest when they are surrounded by others, whether at a party or just around friends. 

Li Bai did not like studying when he was a child. Besides, he was very naughty (顽皮的). One day, the teacher was not in the classroom, and students were all reading books by themselves. However, little Li Bai quietly went out to play.

Little Li Bai came to the river at the foot of a mountain. Then he saw an elderly woman grinding (磨) an iron rod (铁杵) on the stone. Little Li Bai was surprised and asked, "Lady, what are you doing?" The elderly woman answered, "I am grinding the iron rod into a needle (针)." Little Li Bai was surprised and asked, "Oh! It is so thick (粗). How can it be a needle?" The elderly woman answered, "As long as every day I grind the rod a little more, it will be thinner and finally become a needle." "It is so hard for you to make it," said little Li Bai. "But I will keep on doing it day by day. Nothing is impossible," said the elderly woman.

Hearing it, Li Bai turned around and ran back to the classroom. From then on, he kept studying hard every day and became a talented poet (诗人) later.

Why Are Tennis Scores So Strange?

One, two, three . . . Most sports have a pretty easy scoring system (计分系统), but tennis is a bit different. In each game, both players start with zero —called "love". After one person scores (得分), the point becomes 15. The next point is 30, then 40, and the following point wins that game. 

Some wonder why we do the points this way. Why not just "1, 2, 3, game Queen Wen," for example? Unluckily, we don't know much about the beginning of this scoring system. We only know that it was different. In the early days of the sport, the points were 15, 30, 45 not 40. A poem (诗歌) from the 1410s counted the points of a game between King Henry V of England and the French Dauphin (法国王储) as 15, 30, 45. This was easier to understand because every time one scored, it was by 15. 

But why do we give players 15 points when it's actually just a single point?  ★  One popular story says that the numbers have something to do with clocks. People may have felt that the four quarters of a clock were a good way to score the game. But not everyone is happy with that story. Some people point out that people didn't begin to use minute hands until the late 1500. 

You may find it strange to use "love" for a score of zero. Some believe that it came from the French word "L'oeuf" (the egg) - after all, the number zero looks like a duck or goose egg. Others like a more romantic idea about its beginning: Some people play tennis for love even if they don't win anything. 

No matter how strange the scoring system may be, tennis is enjoyed all around the world. Tens of millions play it, with even more watching it on TV or their phones. So, why not pick up your racket (or sit down on your sofa) and enjoy some fun with tennis? 

Some students don't like maths. They think it's difficult. And here is what you can do.

Listen well in class. The maths teacher knows much. When you listen well, you can know much, too. So be a careful (仔细的) student and listen well. And you can ask your maths teacher for help if you don't know in class.

Ask your classmates for help. Your maths teacher isn't always with you. When you find a problem too difficult, you can ask your classmates for help, too. A classmate is a good friend. He or she must be happy to help you.

Practise it every day. Do you want to be good at maths? It takes time. You can't learn it well in a day. So practise it every day, and you can find it easy. Maths is a great subject. Let's learn it well.
