Have you ever ridden a Ferris wheel lately? Can you imagine the flying feeling as you are pulled up to the top and then moved down to the bottom quickly again?

Today a Ferris wheel is usually 40 to 60 feet tall. That seems very high when you are on the top looking down. But the first Ferris wheel was 264 feet high- taller than a twenty-story building! Can you imagine the view from the top of that?

The first Ferris wheel was built for the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. The people who planned the fair were looking for an attraction that would bring people to Chicago. George Ferris handed a drawing of a giant wheel that people could ride on. At first everyone laughed at his strange idea. But Mr Ferris did not give up, and finally the idea was accepted. The ride opened in June of 1893.

Today's Ferris wheels have 12 to 16 seats, which each carry 2 or 3 people. But that first one had 36 enclosed cars, each holding 60 passengers. When filled, it carried 2,160 people. During that summer in Chicago, about 1.5 million people rode the Ferris wheel.

After the fair, the ride was moved to a nearby amusement park built especially to show off the wheel. In 1904, it was moved again一to St. Louis for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. After the fair there, the wheel stood unused. In 1906, it was finally sold to a company for scrap metal(废金属).

Luckily a Chicago bridge builder, W.E. Sullivan, figured out how to make a smaller Ferris wheel that could easily be taken apart and put together. In 1906, he started the company that still makes many of the Ferris wheels used today.

But, whenever you ride one, remember that it all began with George Ferris's strange idea!

Babies don't learn to talk just from hearing sounds. They are lip (嘴唇) readers too. It happens during the period when a baby's babbling (咿呀声) slowly changes from unclear voices into that first "mama" or "dada". The babies have to find out how to shape their lips to make the sounds they are hearing, according to developmental psychologist David Lewkowicz of Florida Atlantic University, who led the study.

Clearly it doesn't take them too long to understand the movements that match basic sounds. By their first birthdays, babies start changing back to look you in the eye again. It offers more clues that quality face-time with babies is very important for speech development more than, say, turning on the latest baby DVD.

But Lewkowicz went a step further. He and his student Amy Hansen Tift tested nearly 180 babies, groups of them at ages 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 months. How? They showed videos of a woman speaking in English or French to babies of English speakers. They found that when the speaker used English, the 4-month-old babies gazed (凝视) mostly into her eyes. The 6-month-old babies spent equal amounts (数量) of time looking at the eyes and the mouth. The 8-month-old babies and 10-month-old babies studied mostly the mouth. At 12 months, attention started changing back toward the speaker's eyes.

But what happened when these babies are used to English heard French? The 12-month-old babies studied the mouth longer, just like younger babies. They needed the extra information to understand the new sounds. That fits with research into bilingualism (双语) that shows babies' brains adjust (调整) themselves to tell the differences between the sounds of their first language over other languages in the first year of life.

The continued lip reading shows the l-year-old babies clearly still are fit for learning. Babies are so hard to study, says Duke University cognitive scientist Greg Appelbaum, who found the research so fantastic that he wants to know more.

 阅读下面短文, 从每小题所给的 A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Proms(毕业舞会) are a big part of high school for students in the UK. A school prom is a party to celebrate an important date at school, such as the end of secondary school or completing school exams.

Prom parties

Proms are usually held in June, around the end of exam time. The idea is to have fun with your school friends. Some schools even hold the party in a five-star hotel. Others have a more basic dinner in the school itself. A prom organizer provides everything for the special event, such as balloons, food and music.

Clothes and beauty

Young people like to dress up for their prom. On prom night, girls change their school uniform for an evening dress and high heels. Boys usually dress up in a suit with a tic and smart shoes.

Cars

Arriving at your prom in a good car is very popular! The party can start on the way to the dinner or dance. Part of the fun for some prom-goers is to drive around town in their best clothes and make sure that everyone sees them.

An American tradition

Not long ago, most British schools didn't have school proms. They had a simple school dance at the end of term. Now, more than 85% of schools in Britain have a prom. Many parents see the prom as an import from the US. They say that American TV programs and films such as High School Musical have had a big influence on their kids.
