My father was a restaurant owner. My name is Vincent Lim. I'm a chef and restaurant owner. Running a Chinese restaurant is one of the hardest and most1 things in my life.

When we first arrived in Australia, my dad2 a Chinese restaurant. I would go there on a3 basis to help him out. And slowly I developed my4 for cooking. The hard work that my dad put into Chinese food makes me feel so proud that I am lucky enough to learn from a5

The first dish that I ever learned to cook was the fried rice, which is the easiest but also the 6 one to get right. From years of experience, I can7 you the difference between a good fried rice just from the feel and from the smell, without even taking a bite.

To lots of Chinese immigrants like us, the restaurant isn't just a business. It's a sense of 8 . The wok hei (锅气)9 every ingredient in the wok, producing an appealing smell. The fragrances of the food10 the air and lingered around so much longer. Those memories, they become nostalgic (乡愁). The sense of home is what makes a11 good dish taste.

In 2017, my dad passed away. I reaized that my love of cooking dishes from my childhood. I 12 the restaurant that I own today. Cooking was a13 way to my dad. I wanted to 14 everything that he taught me. Cooking15 all the hard work and memories that we had.

In spite of the fact that I had stayed with my sister for 14 years. I knew one thing—I would not want to be like her. In high school, she was a journalist and it was 1 she talked about. No matter how many times I said it, I 2 myself in "Intro to Journalism" freshman year,3 . Why? That was because my mother wanted me to be a journalist, 

Though it was the4 thing I wanted to do, I got to realize the point of being a journalist. It was 5 writing a report. It was also communicating with people by telling stories. After a short term, I began to see what happened around me 6 —I saw things as7 , which I wanted to share with people who wants to 8 .

In the second semester, I joined the newspaper staff and 9 nearly every position on staff, from designing different columns to taking photographs. I wrote stories, opinions, and almost any other thing for every 10 of the paper.

I loved everything around me, but I found my gift in visual journalism. I had a/an 11 for design and I was12 ready to put in. When I was writing each story, I promised to tell in its entirety. There is possibility that some 13 of a story can't be presented in a paragraph form. That is 14 I came in. I worked to improve the 15 of our magazine every day. But my work is not 16 to this. I also worked to add the web and multimedia 17 the publication. I loved producing content for the newspaper. 18 , I found myself creating less and less through my junior year. Then 1 was thinking up ideas and helping others to do the 19 to make their work happen.

Now, I'm proud to say that I have fully made 20 of what it means to be a good storyteller.

My elder brother，Steve，in the1 of my father who died when I was six，gave me important lessons in 2 that helped me grow into an adult.For example，Steve taught me to face the3 of my behaviour.Once when I returned in 4 from a Saturday baseball game，it was Steve who 5 the time to ask me what happened.When I6 that my baseball had flown through Mrs Holt's basement window，7 the glass with a crash，Steve encouraged me to apologise to her.After all，I should not have played in the path between buildings.8 my knees knocked as I explained to Mrs Holt，I 9 to pay for the window if she would return my ball.

I also learned from Steve that 10 property is a sacred thing.After I found a silver pen in my fifth﹣grade classroom，I wanted to keep it，but Steve explained that it might be important to someone else in spite of the fact that it had little value.He reminded me of 11 I'd hate to lose the small dog my father gave me to someone else.I returned the pen to my teacher，Mrs David.

Yet of all the 12 Steve gave me，his respect for life was the most vivid in my mind.When I was twelve，I killed an old brown sparrow in the park with a BB gun. 13 with my accuracy，I screamed to Steve to come from the house to have a look.I shall never forget the way he stood for a long moment and stared at the bird."Did it 14 you first，Mark？" he asked.I didn't know what to answer.I really felt terrible then，but that moment 15 out as the most important lesson my brother taught me. 

Lisa, who {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(graduate)from our school last June, is about 2. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(go)to college in New York. She came to share her suggestions for high school {#blank#}3{#/blank#} us. Lisa said Orientation Day was really {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(help)when she first started high school because it could help students to get to know the school and the other  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(student). Though Lisa was a member of the school volleyball team, she wasn't selected for the end-of-year {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(compete). At first, she was really sad, {#blank#}7{#/blank#}later she realized that she joined the team for the love of the sport. It wasn't just about winning. So she kept {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(work)hard to support her teammates during their training. Lisa {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(total)agreed with the wonderful words from the writer Maya Angelou-Be a rainbow in somebody else's cloud. So she suggested that we give our friends {#blank#}10{#/blank#}hand when they can make us feel needed it. And this good, too. 

I was heading back home after giving my colleague a lift. I took a  1  as the snowstorm was approaching.

Then the snow started and was coming down  2 . Within minutes I was in a whiteout. The windows were 3 and getting covered with snow, so I slowed down and rolled down my driver's side window, thinking I could better 4 the road edge and keep to a straight line. But really, I had no  5  where I was. I stopped and kept the car running to stay 6  . I called 911. The operator told me to wait things out for the night.

The call left me in  7 . "Breathe," I told myself. An idea occurred to me. I 8  my location online and explained what I was  9 , wishing for anyone to come to my rescue. Soon enough, people started chiming in on my post. I got a 10 from someone who was going to put me in touch with people nearby. I had never been more  11 .

Then I saw a big 12  in the dark. He had walked about 500 meters to get me, 13  the wind and snow each step of the way. "You'll be OK. Follow me." He turned around and started to trudge through the snow, sure of the 14 . I drove slowly behind him. When we reached his house, I burst into tears of 15 .

Volunteering has been a way of life for me for the past five years since I was fifteen.

In 2020 I1 with a newly founded social enterprise, which conducted cooking lessons for visually impaired (视障) trainee2 . I absolutely loved it as it involved meaningful 3 with people and I was fully4 throughout the entire time I was there. This was unlike some other types of volunteering, which may involve mostly behind-the-scenes work that can get5 after a while.

We called ourselves "sighted assistants" and each of us was6 with a visually impaired trainee chef. As a volunteer, I would walk with the trainee to the Enabling Village7 , and then ensure their 8 as they learned to cook a new dish. This included helping them9 the position of the sink, ensuring proper use of electrical appliances,10 boiling and hot objects, as well as being careful with knives among other things.

Being there with them made me truly11 appreciate how difficult life can be when you are partially sighted or completely blind. Every tiny task12 requires massive effort. There are so many people with visual impairments, I realized13 . While medicine still does not have the power to cure all of these conditions, we are never short of ways to empower these individuals by making life14 easier and 15 more meaningful for them.
