At my heaviest I weighed 370 pounds. I had a very poor relationship with food: I used it to1bad feelings, to make myself feel better, and to celebrate. Worried about my health, I tried many different kinds of diets but nothing worked. I came to believe that I could do nothing about my weight.

When I was 50, my weight problem began to affect me2. I didn't want to live the rest of my life with this extra weight any more.

That year, I3a seminar(研讨课) where we were asked to create a project that would touch the world. A seminar leader shared her4story —she had not only lost 125 pounds, but also raised $25,000 for homeless children.

5by her story, I created the As We heal(痊愈), the World Heals project. My goal was to lose 150 pounds in one year and raise $50,000. In this way, I could not only heal myself but heal the world by supporting a movement set up 30 years ago to end hunger.

6I began my own personal weight program, I was filled with the fear that I would run into the same difficulties that beat me before. While the7hung over my head, there were also signs that I was headed down the right path. I sent letters to everyone I knew, telling them about my project. It worked perfectly. Donations began 8in from hundreds of people.

Of course, I also took some practical steps to lose weight. I hired a fitness coach. I began to eat small and9meals and exercise often.

A year later, I10my goal: I lost 150 pounds and raised $50,000! I feel that I've been given a second life to devote to something that is meaningful and great.

 阅读理解

①Eating good food and getting proper exercise are important to stay healthy. Getting enough sleep is important, too. Experts say that teenagers between the ages of 15 and 20 need 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night.

②Your body needs to take a rest from all the activities it has done during the day. Your brain needs a rest, too. You are likely to get sick easier without enough sleep.

③You have a "24-hour clock" inside your body that tells you when to be awake and when to go to sleep.  ▲  Blue light that comes from the Sun tells your brain to keep you awake during the day. When there is no blue light at night, the brain tells the body that it's time for sleep.

④There are many things that stop the brain from telling your body when it's time to sleep. One of these is blue light at night. Today, people spend a lot of time watching television or looking at screens on computers or smart phones. These devices (装置) give off blue light. If you look at them at night, the blue light can trick your body into thinking it's daytime. Then it is more difficult to go to sleep.

⑤What should you do to get good sleep? Experts say that you shouldn't look at screens that give off blue light for at least one hour before going to sleep.

⑥ Do not watch TV or use anything with a computer screen in bed. If you need to do something to fall asleep, it is better to read a book. Also, keep your bedroom as dark as you can. This will help you sleep well.

Fun Fact

Going to bed at the same time every night helps you get used to a schedule so you will be ready to sleep at the proper time.

 请阅读短文,从每小题所给的四个选项中选出能回答所提问题或完成所给句子的最佳答案。

It's reported that 800 million people around the world have experienced back pain. And many of them find that their pain keeps coming back. ____ But scientists believe that doing one simple thing could help: walking.

Scientists invited 700 people to take part in a study. Most were women and all of them had recently experienced back pain. The people were put into two groups. One group took part in a walking program and had six meetings with a doctor. People in this group were asked to walk half an hour five days a week, while those in the other group didn't do anything. The scientists followed up the two groups for three years.

The scientists' findings are surprising. People in the walking group had an average (平均) of  208 days before their back pain recurred, while those in the other group felt the pain again after an average of 112 days. What's more, people in the walking group also made far fewer visits to the doctor.

Why is walking helpful to lower back pain? Scientists are not yet certain of the reasons. But they think it's probably because walking can get the muscles (肌肉) stronger and improve sleep. As for how to walk, they suggest walking on a flat (平整的) surface. People also should listen to their bodies, as walking too far or for too long could make the pain worse.
