Keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to improve our English writing ability.

Compared with other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes (little) time. It can help us to develop the habit of thinking in English. If we persist in this practice, gradually we'll learn how (express)ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English, we certainly run up against many (difficult). In the first place, it often happens that we have trouble in (find) appropriate words and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there (be) many idiomatic ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is extremely hard for us to put them into English (proper).

As far as I am (concern), my suggestion is we should always have a notebook and a Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever something beats us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then consult our dictionary. We can also ask our English teacher help, if necessary. In short, I believe that it is of great use to keep a diary in English for development of our writing skills.

Last summer holiday, I took part in a teaching project and volunteered{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(teach) in a countryside primary school for two weeks.

When we arrived at the school, though shocked by the poor living conditions, we quickly adapted {#blank#}2{#/blank#} to the life there. My good friend Tom and I were in charge of the third year students, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(consist) of just 18 boys and girls. We not only taught them English and maths, but also organized some after-school {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(activity) for them. Gradually, I found that many of the students were actually quite 6{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(talent). But some had to leave school early, which is{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(large) because their families were under heavy financial pressure, and they had to find a job to support the family.

As well as giving lessons, we also helped set up a reading room in the school {#blank#}7{#/blank#} students hardly had any access{#blank#}8{#/blank#} good reading materials except textbooks. With the help of school staff and students, we cleaned out an abandoned classroom. When we placed the books students and teachers in my high school {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(donate) onto the shelves, I found the students were more than excited and {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(dive) into reading there.

Two weeks quickly passed and we had to leave. I did not know how much we had actually taught them, but for me I learned a great deal—cherish what I possess and study harder.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

The Day After Thanksgiving (Friday) is known as Black Friday. This used to be unofficially or officially the start of holiday shopping season. Almost all stores come out with special early bird offers {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (attract) consumers to their shop. People stand in line hours before the stores are opened, to grab the bargains of the year. In the last few years, we {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (witness) a trend towards bringing those Black Friday Sales online before Friday.

In the last few years (starting from 2013 to be precise), Black Friday Sales have started before Friday—with some stores {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (start) their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving day or even on Wednesday and Monday. It would not be surprising to see Black Friday sale starting on Monday on the Black Friday week.

The closest reason for {#blank#}4{#/blank#} it is known as Black Friday {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (give) in Wikipedia. Many retailers report some of {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (they) highest profits on Black Friday. The black portion of the name, “Black Friday” relates to businesses recording their {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (lose) in red ink and gains in black. This tradition lives on in modern accounting software.

Deals websites like Dealsofamerica.com started to highlight “Black Friday sales” from 2003 {#blank#}8{#/blank#} then the retailers picked it up. {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (essential), Black Friday is an Internet term. But before it, people used to regard the sales {#blank#}10{#/blank#} “Day after Thanksgiving Sale”.
