根据短文内容, 从下面方框中选择适当的句子填空, 使短文完整、通顺。

Besides the spelling of the word, there are, clearly, many differences between American and British humor.

There is a common belief in the U.K. that Americans don't understand irony (讽刺). This is of course not true. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Irony may show up in American comedies(喜剧), but people there don't use it as much as the British do in daily life.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} It actually runs in the blood of the British people. They use it as much as prepositions(介词) in everyday conversations, as a way of playing with their friends and laughing at their enemies, as well as themselves. This may sometimes make people unhappy if the listeners are not used to it.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} After Americans use irony, they will clearly say that they are "only kidding". They feel the need to make a joke clearer so that it will not make other people uncomfortable.

Humor is tied so much to culture. American jokes are more clear and forward, a bit like Americans themselves. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} This may result from the fact that British culture is more reserved(矜持的) than American culture.

    However, we still find that certain American comedies have made huge success in Britain and vice versa(反之亦然). {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. Things are quite different in America.

B. Therefore, although there are differences between both comic styles, there is still an appreciation(欣赏) and understanding of the other's sense of humor.

C. But what is true is that Americans don't use it all the time.

D. However, irony is common in British culture.

E. British jokes, on the other hand, are more subtle and usually with a hidden meaning.

根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入空缺处的最佳选项,使短文意思通顺,内容完整。

Teenage life — better now, or in the past?

Does this situation sound familiar (熟悉)?

You are complaining (抱怨) to your parents about something. Maybe your computer isn't powerful enough to play the latest games. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Then you hear…

    When I was your age, there weren't any computers or video games. And I didn't get a bike until I was sixteen. And it was second-hand. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

So, is it really true that life is better for teenagers now? It is certainly true that many teenagers have got more things nowadays. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} So parents have got more money to spend on each child. And many things are cheaper than they were when our parents were children.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Forty years ago, no one could imagine a world with tiny computers and amazing smart phones. And now these things are necessary — we can't imagine living without them!

However, technology often means we spend more time at home. And often it is just us with our computer or television. Teenagers don't do enough exercise. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} And, although young people still get on well with their friends, some people think teenagers today don't have so many social activities as they did in the past.

What do you think? How is teenage life better these days?

A. And it was too big for me.

B. A typical family is smaller now.

C. Or your friends' bikes are better than yours!

D. So they aren't as healthy as they were in the past.

E. Technology is probably the greatest change in our life.

阅读下面的短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项补全短文。选项中有一项为多余选项。

A. skilled kids may forget green hands

B. so an adult should always be present

C. But swimming can also be dangerous

D. a few seconds can make a big difference

E. Or you could hit your head on the bottom

Summer is here. One of the best ways to cool off on a hot summer day is to jump into a swimming pool. Swimming is great exercise, and a trip to a pool or beach is a good way to have fun with friends. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}, so it's important to stay safe as you do it. Here are a few things you can do to swim safely.

●Swim only in areas set for swimming.

Don't swim unless there is a lifeguard (救生员) on duty. If you're on a beach near the ocean, this is especially important. In some places, fast currents (急流) can sweep swimmers away without warning. So if a sign says "no swimming", please take care.

Be careful when diving (跳水) into the water headfirst.

Most pools have deep ends where diving is safe. In natural water, don't dive unless you know that the water is deep enough. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, causing injury (伤害) or death.

●Make sure you have a partner with you.

Nobody knows what will happen while you are swimming. If something goes wrong, you can get help from that person as soon as possible. In this situation, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}.

●Pay close attention to children's safety.

Kids who don't know how to swim should wear life jackets. But by themselves they are not enough, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. If you have a pool at home, put a fence (围栏) around it in case children fall in. And if a child disappears, check the pool first.
