"Well," he answered, "there' s a strange true story about the umbrella. About ten years ago, I was walking along a quiet London street one evening when it suddenly rained. I had no raincoat or umbrella. And the people in the streets were fewer and fewer. As I was on my way to a party, I was afraid to get wet. So I stood in a doorway and waited for the rain to stop.  What was worse, there even wasn't a person around, and still it rained and rained. At last a young man came to the place where I was standing.  As I hoped he would allow me to walk to the next corner with him, where I could get a taxi, I stepped out of the dark doorway where I had been standing.  As I suddenly appeared(出现) before him, the young man was so shocked that he dropped the umbrella. He ran away and disappeared into the darkness. I picked up the umbrella and continued my walk. I knew it would be hard in this big city to find the owner, so I've kept it ever since."

Giving directions in different places

If you ask people of different countries "Could you tell me the way to the post office?", you will get different answers.

In Kansas, America, there are no towns or buildings within miles. So instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. For example, people will say, "Go north two miles {#blank#}2{#/blank#}".

People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions. They will often say, "Follow me." {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Sometimes if a person doesn't know the answer to your question, he or she, like a New Yorker, might say, "Sorry, I have no idea." But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers "I don't know". {#blank#}4{#/blank#} They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. A visitor can often get lost in Yucatan!

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} You might not understand a person's words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language. He or she will usually point to the correct direction. Go on in that direction and you may find the post office!

B. But one thing will help you everywhere.

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don't give friendship back. That is why some friendships don't last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest, be generous(慷慨的), be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to hones' one another.

①如果你不说实话,人们通常都会识破。If a friend finds out that you haven't been hones', you may lose your friend'.

Generosoity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don't have to give your lunch money or your clothes, of course. Instead you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, like your hobbies and your interests. Naturally  you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you ③________.

Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. ④Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend, you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so you can understand the problem better.

②No two friendship are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practise honesty, generosity and understanding.
