It snowed again. My seventh Christmas was round the corner. I dreamed of getting the present from Father Christmas until my elder sister dropped the bomb (突然宣布). "There is no Father Christmas." 

    I ran to my grandmother's house, for she always told the 1. Grandmother was at home. I told her everything. "No Father Christmas?" she was a little 2. "Don't believe it. Put on your coat, and let's go."

    "Go? Where, Grandma?" I asked.

    "Kerby's Store. "

    As we walked through its doors. Grandma handed me the dollars and said. "Take the 3and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." Then she turned and walked out of the Kerby's.

    For a few seconds I just stood there, holding the money, wondering what to buy, and who to buy it for.

    I thought of everybody I knew, my family, my friends, my neighbours… I suddenly thought of Bobbie Decbar, a boy with bad breath (口臭) and messy (凌乱的) hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs Polack's class.

    Bobbie 4 went to any party during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, 5 we all knew that he didn't have a cough. In fact, he didn't have a 6. I decided to buy Bobbie a red warm coat that he would like.

    That evening, grandma helped me wrap (包裹) the coat in Christmas paper and ribbons (缎带), and write "To Bobbie. From Father Christmas" on it. Grandma told me Father Christmas never let people know that he 7 them. Then she drove me over to Bobbie's home, telling me that I was helping Father Christmas 8 the presents.

    Grandma parked the car along the street and we hid behind the trees near Bobbie's home. Then Grandma said to me. "All right, Father Christmas, get going."

    I took a deep breath, rushed to his front door, put the present down 9 the door, rang the doorbell and flew back to the safety of the 10 and Grandma. We waited breathlessly in the dark for the front door to open. Finally it did and there stood Bobbie.

    That night, I realized that Father Christmas was alive and well, and we were on his team.

This is a story of a man who works in my factory. I have seen him for years, but I didn't know him very well. He was a little bit weird (怪异的). He always wore an old red hat and carried a rubbish bag. He seemed to have no friend, and was always alone. He usually spent his break time and his lunchtime walking around in the factory and collecting used tins (金属罐). Maybe he was too poor, I guess. But I didn't care much about him.

One day, I was fixing one of the broken machines in the factory when this "tin man" came with his bag. As usual, he picked up the tins, which were all around the place. My manager was standing there, watching me.

When I finished my job, I heard my manager ask the "tin man" about what he was going to do with those tins he had collected. I never even thought about this kind of question, because I always assumed that "tin man" would take those tins to the recycling center.

Unexpectedly, the "tin man" answered, "I will give these tins to my neighbor. He has been ill for many years and cannot work. He is too poor to buy daily bread now."

I was so shocked to hear that, so I asked him, "You mean you collect all those tins just to help your neighbor?"

"I know this does not help much," he said. "But I give everything to him, because he cannot work. He needs help."

It was the most beautiful moment in my life. We are all able to help others no matter we are rich or poor. It has made me feel humble (谦卑的) every day since then.

Sun Yingsha is a famous Chinese table tennis player. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}（recent）, the ITTF（国际乒乓球联合会）awarded her "Female Player of the Year 2023". In the past year, she won seven women's singles（单打）gold medals.

Sun comes from Shijiazhuang, Hebei province. She {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（play）table tennis for 17 years since she was five. Her parents wanted her {#blank#}3{#/blank#}（have）something to do after school and be {#blank#}4{#/blank#}（health）. At the age of seventeen, she succeeded in {#blank#}5{#/blank#}（join）the national team and started to join in many games. The 23-year-old got the nickname of "Little Devil" because {#blank#}6{#/blank#} her style of play. Her competitors find it hard to get the ball back.

Sun also has a strong mind. If she is losing in a game, she never gives up. She said, "You always face ups and downs. Determination（决心）and courage（勇气）can make you be {#blank#}7{#/blank#} excellent player."

Outside of the sport, Sun is a lovely girl. One of her {#blank#}8{#/blank#}（hobby）is watching videos of the panda HuaHua. "I like to watch her rolling around," Sun said. Sometimes, Sun is a little {#blank#}9{#/blank#}（care）. She once got lost inside a gym. Another time, she nearly missed her airplane after a competition.

Sarah is my best friend. We always go to school together{#blank#}1{#/blank#}we live close to other. And also，it's great to stay with Sarah. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}？Here are the reasons（原因）.

More than Just a Scientist

What would life be like if you were a rocker, a soccer player, a teacher at Stanford University, and a Nobel Prize winner? Carolyn Bertozzi from the US lives such a cool life!

Bertozzi shared the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry(化学) with Barry Sharpless(US) and Morten Meldal(Denmark). She became that year's only woman winner in science and the eighth woman to receive the chemistry prize in history. 

Bertozzi won the prize for studying the sugar coats of cells(细胞). She has found a smart way to connect cells by connecting their sugar coats. The cells then have a green colour so that scientists can see clearly where they are and how they move. According to the University of California, Berkeley, this finding made lots of research possible and easier, such as developing better tests for infectious diseases(传染病) and new treatments for cancer(癌症治疗). 

Although she is successful now, Bertozzi said she was not very interested in chemistry until her second year at Harvard University. "The professors made the class very difficult on purpose, "she told Chemistry World magazine. "My classmates felt really hard and have words with them, but it matched my brain. "Apart from doing science studies, Bertozzi has lived a colourful life. She was a keyboarder(键盘手) in a rock band. "I even used to think about studying music, "she said. She also played soccer, and won an athletic scholarship(体育奖学金) from Harvard. 

As a woman scientist, Bertozzi tries to improve gender equality(性别平等). "In the late 1980s, maybe 10 percent of the students were girls, "she told news magazine Chemical & Engineering News. "There were maybe one or two women in a lab, so we tried to support each other by starting a monthly get-together for all the women students in the department. "And Bertozzi won a prize from the American Association for the Advancement of Science for her work to increase diversity(多样化) in science.
