How do you keep cool during summer? Air conditioning(空调) and electric fans are good tools in modern society, But before that, people could only use tans.

Over 3, 000 years ago, the first fans began to be used. They were made of feathers(羽毛) bamboo or silk. They came in different shapes, including round and square.

Later, with the invention of paper, folding( 可折叠的) paper fans became popular during the Song Dynasty. There are usually beautiful pictures on fans. Some are landscapes(风景). Others are flowers and animals. Moreover, many great people including Su Dongpo, a calligrapher(书法家) and painter of the Song Dynasty, and Tang Yin, a poet and painter of the Ming Dynasty, once painted their masterpiece (杰作) on fans. The made fans not only useful tools in daily life but also great artworks.

Therefore, with its value of beauty, people take the fan as a symbol of status (地位). That's why in old China, emperors(皇帝) and scholars often held fans.

Today, fans are also great collectors' items and gifts. On the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, folding fans were given to leaders and officials of other countries, as well as other audience. While they were waving fans to get cool, they were also experiencing Chinese culture.

Irwin Corey was a 1 American film actor. Ho 2 a beggar(乞丐) once and often walked in the streets of Manhattan. He wore old and 3 clothes. He was very thin and seemed to be weak, looking like a poor homeless old man.

I deeply thank my mother. {#blank#}10{#/blank#} her help, I couldn't change so fast. She is also happy about my growth. I think she is wise and patient. I will love her forever. 

When duty shines

For Chinese people, festivals {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(usual) mean a break from work and happy family reunions. But for Leng Wenying,{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(festival) only mean more work. 

As a doctor in the emergency room, Leng {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(miss) many family meals with her loved ones. She is often much {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(busy) during festivals. Sometimes she has to work without any {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(break) for 20 hours. This {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(make) her tired and thirsty. "Festivals are a challenge {#blank#}7{#/blank#} our patients are often in a bad situation. We need {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(stand) by every minute, "says Leng. 

Leng's duty means she has little time {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(be) with her family at festivals. But she never {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (regret) her decision to be an ER doctor. "I make the most of every minute {#blank#}11{#/blank#} my family. I'm very {#blank#}12{#/blank#}(thank) for their support, "she says. 

Leng is only one of millions of {#blank#}13{#/blank#}(medicine) workers in China. They give up their family time {#blank#}14{#/blank#}(answer) the call of duty. In the heart of every patient, their hard work shines brighter than festive fireworks. 

There are four seasons in a year in the city. 

Spring is from March to May. The weather is sunny and warm. The temperature is from 5 to 18 {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. Everything begins to grow. It's a good time to go on a field trip. 

Summer is {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the hottest but wettest. In the southeast, there are many showers. And sometimes, in the morning the sun shines, but in the afternoon, it might {#blank#}3{#/blank#} cloudy and rainy. There are storms sometimes. So, people often take an umbrella. But in the northwest, it's dry and hot. 

Autumn comes in September. Best of all, the weather is not too cold or too hot. It's the best time to travel.

I like winter best compared to the other seasons. I'm not {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. I like it because it's snowy. I can make a snowman,{#blank#}5{#/blank#} and ski. It's also pleasant(令人愉快的) for me to take photos of snow with my new phone. 

It was Mary's birthday. She 1 a letter from her uncle. "Dear Mary," he wrote in the letter. "Happy birthday! I'm sending you some 2 . They are arriving tomorrow. I hope you'll like them. Uncle Toddy."
