    Growing up on a small farm, I lived a life that I took for granted. My father worked in the city as a plumber (水暖工). He was not highly educated, but he was smart, looking at problems in an engineer's way. He was a man made of leather, brass and chewing tobacco who tried to teach my brother and me useful things, including respect. He also had a temper and was strict with us for he would scold us when we made some careless mistakes. Sometimes, my father seemed like a distant enemy to me and I didn't like him very much.

    One day I came home from primary school and his car was already there. Once inside, I was told by my mother that he didn't feel well. His back hurt. My father never missed work; in fact, when he came home, he went to the barn to work even more. I remember looking at him secretly around the corner as he lay on his bed in the middle of the day.

    Later, my mother told me he got multiple myeloma (多发性骨髓瘤), a type of blood cancer. As the cancer grows, the person will shrink because the disease destroys the body's energy and the abnormal antibodies cause problems for other cells and tissue. Bones eventually look like Swiss cheese, and when they break, they may never heal. But I didn't realize that my father's time was rather limited and just treated him the same way I used to.

    For the last year of my father's life, his entire day consisted of rising from his hospital bed in the living room and walking to his chair to sit and think. He was predictably in that chair when I came home one day during the ninth grade. I do not remember where my mother and brother were, but the two of us were alone.

The Lost Dog

One summer day, I went out my back door and found a small dog sitting in the grass. The dog stood up and wagged (摇) his tail when he saw me. I touched his short brown-and-white coat and checked him for a collar or ID tag (项圈或身份牌). He had neither. I lived in a small town. I knew all the dogs in the neighborhood, but I'd never seen him before. I told him to sit. To my surprise, he sat at once. "Stay," I said, as I made my way into the storeroom where we kept the dry dog food for our dogs. When I returned, he was sitting in the exact place where I had left him. "Wow! You sure are trained," I said. I set out some water and food, and the dog started eating.

I left him in the yard and went inside to read through the newspaper's "Lost and Found" column (专栏). Unluckily, nobody had reported a missing brown-and-white dog. An hour later, my brother came home and asked why there was a strange dog in the yard. "I don't know where he came from," I said. "But he is owned by someone. Maybe he's just lost and will find his way home." Later that afternoon, my brother and I went outside and found the dog walking by the back door. We played with him for a while and found that the dog knew tricks. He could sit, stay, roll over, and lie down according to instructions. He also loved jumping to catch a tennis ball in mid-air. When my parents came home, we showed them the dog and all his tricks. My parents were shocked by his skills as much as we were. None of us had ever seen a dog so well-trained before. The dog got along well with our dogs, and we gave him a comfortable place to sleep in the storeroom.

The next day, I checked the "Lost and Found" column again, also with no result. Then, I called the newspaper and ran a "Found" advertisement describing our new friend.

Three days later, we got a call from a woman who had seen our "Found" advertisement in the newspaper.

Calvin's day camp teacher, Autumn, passed out a sheet of paper with pictures and descriptions of different birds and a small pair of binoculars) (双筒望远镜) to each camper. He announced, "We're going to do a one-week challenge called ‘Big Week', where you try to identify birds and mark them on the paper. Whoever identifies the most birds wins."

Another challenge? Ever since camp started, Gladys had beaten Calvin at everything. If he won this one, maybe he'd finally show Gladys that she wasn't unbeatable. "How will you know if I really saw…" Calvin scanned the list. "… a glossy ibis?" "I won't," Autumn said. "A Big Week is based on honesty."

The next day at the preserve, when they hid behind some brush, Gladys spotted a great egret! "That was my gift to you," Gladys whisper-shouted with an I'm-going-to-win-this tone. "Like I would've missed that giant bird," Calvin protested. Suddenly, birds exploded above Calvin's head. Thunk! He fell down onto his back. Gladys rushed toward him, helped him up and advised, "Here's a tip: try being OUIET."

That evening, a large bird landed on Calvin's neighbor's tree. Calvin focused the binoculars. The bird had a bright red eye, a thick straight bill, a white throat and breast, and—oh, wow—long, thin, white feathers on the back of its head. "A black-crowned night heron!" he whispered excitedly. He was completely absorbed in his observation.

As the week went by, competition became fierce. Calvin had to win this contest. But chance seemed so slim! Then he remembered that he had found a feather that Autumn thought belonged to a Cooper's hawk close enough. He marked it, plus a few extra birds. What was the difference? He had seen them in the past, or he would see them eventually. He swallowed (吞咽) hard. No one will know the truth.

On the last day of Big Week, Autumn waved Gladys's checklist in the air. "Twenty-six is the number to beat. Anybody else?"
