On that hot August day in 2023, as ash rained down and flames closed in, Jim Rhodes didn't want to be anywhere but Coulterville. "My kid called from Alabama. We first heard ·about the fire from him," Rhodes recalls. "He said, ‘Evacuate（撤离）!'I said, ‘Evacuate? To where?'"

Coulterville is a tiny town located among dry hills where local people raise cattle and other livestock. It has a main street, a park and a museum. It's got a cafe, a grocery shop and a post. And with summer temperatures routinely topping 100 degrees, it has fires—sometimes big fires.

Eventually, this big fire got a name: the Moc Fire, for the tiny town of Moccasin-where it began as a brush fire.

It burnt for 10 days, consuming almost 3,000 acres.

Rhodes woke to find his truck covered in ashand the news was broadcasting evacuation orders. Ranchers（牧场主） across the region were fighting to protect their animals, loading them into the truck or just setting them loose to find safety. Volunteers were readying fairgrounds nearby to shelter animals. Already they were filling up with dogs, cats, chickens, horses, cattle, goats, sheep and rabbits.

As residents and animals were brought out, firefighters poured in. "With them came the biggest bulldozer（挖土机）I've ever seen," says Rhodes. "And they were sent to cut the firebreak that could save the town. We knew that if it made the cut, we'd all have to get out of here."

The situation was clear. The danger was growing. But slowly Rhodes realized that he hadn't come to Coulterville just to leave when the town needed him. He stayed, joining the handful of residents who gathered around the main street where fire officials posted updates. He knew he could help somebody, somehow.

Around midmorning, a farmer he'd never met came by asking for help with animal evacuation. Rhodes's phone was still ringing, but he knew what to do. "I hung up my phone, got in the truck and headed down to his farm," he says.

A friend who was depressed wrote me a letter a few weeks ago.He said his life was full of 1 and that his heart was full of worries.He was 2 about his life.He ended his 3 with this question:"We can't really change our life,can we?"As a famous musician,I 4 immediately and started my letter with these words:"Yes,we certainly can!"

Adults usually do not remember most of the things that are taught by their teachers at school. But this story is one such lesson that I will never forget. Every time I drift off course, I think of this story.

It was a normal Monday morning, and my teacher was teaching us on important things in life and about devoting ourselves to what is important to us. This is how the story went

An old man lived in a certain part of London, and he would wake up every morning and go to the subway. He would get onto the train right to Central London, and then sit at the street corner and beg. He would do this every single day of his life. He sat at the same street corner and begged for almost 20 years.

His house was dirty, and a stench(恶臭) came out of the house and it smelled terrible. The neighbors could not stand the smell any more, so they called for the police officers to clear the place. The officers knocked down the door and cleaned the house. There were small bags of money all over the house that he had collected over the years.

The police counted the money, and they soon realized that the old man was a millionaire (百万富翁). They waited outside his house expecting to share the good news with him. When the old man arrived home that evening, one of the officers told him that there was no need for him to beg any more as he was a rich man now, a millionaire.

But the old man said nothing at all; he went into his house and locked the door. The next morning he woke up as usual, went to the subway, sat at the street corner and continued to beg.

Clearly, this old man had no great plans, dreams or anything significant for his life. We learn nothing from this story other than staying focused on the things we enjoy doing.

Last August, the 900-year-old Wan'an Bridge in Pingnan County, a locality of Ningde City in the coastal Fujian province, was destroyed when it suddenly caught fire.

Wan'an, a national-level protected building, was a wooden arch corridor bridge (木拱廊桥),which for centuries was an ancient architectural calling card for the region. The bridge,98.2 meters long and 4.7 meters wide, was first built in the Song dynasty (960~1279), and was the longest wooden arch corridor bridge left standing in China. Few, however, had imagined that such an ancient bridge would attract public attention in such a way.

Amid the powerful voice of the local population for new wooden arch bridges, the traditional techniques behind the building work have well and truly been revived (唤醒), but the protection of the ancient buildings still has much room for improvement.

Currently, China's approach to the protection of national heritage sites puts protecting and rescuing endangered buildings before all else, but to keep these ancient buildings alive, preventive protection is key.

"Technically, restoring (修复) Wan'an isn't very difficult," said Li, Deputy County Mayor of Pingnan. "Along with the help of the local inheritors of the national intangible cultural heritage, the bridge's restoration looks hopeful. However, the historical value will definitely be affected."

Meanwhile, Zhan, the former Deputy Dean at the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage, pointed out the recent destruction of Wan'an Bridge highlights a serious shortage of warning mechanisms and preventative protection measures, which currently are supposed to be the most important part of protection. "Significant improvements have been made in the past few years in protection, but we still have a long way to go on proper planning for protection work. How to protect cultural heritage is a matter that we need to discuss as soon as possible," he added.

China Mobile, the world's largest telecom carrier by mobile subscribers, has successfully launched the world's first satellite {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (test) 6G architecture, marking a milestone in its efforts to explore integrated space and ground communication technology.

The low-earth orbit test satellite is {#blank#}2{#/blank#} world's first to employ 6G design architecture, and it{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (launch) on Saturday along with another satellite that comes with China Mobile's 5G technology.

The 6G test satellite hosts a distributed autonomous architecture for 6G, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} was jointly developed by China Mobile and the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Innovation Academy for Microsatellites. The system, using domestic software and hardware, supports in-orbit software reconstruction, flexible deployment of core network functions and automated management,{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (enhance) the efficiency and reliability of the in-orbit operation of the satellite core network, China Mobile said.

Set at an orbit {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (high) of approximately 500 kilometers, these {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (experiment) satellites offer advantages such as low latency(延迟) and high data transfer rates {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (compare) with high-orbit satellites which travel at 36,000 kilometers.
