The sun went down when an old man came to a small mountain village with a heavy bag. He found an inn(小旅馆) and wanted to stay there for the night.
After he had gone to his room, the owner of the inn said to his wife, “Look at his heavy bag, dear! I'm sure there're a lot of valuable(贵重的) things. “Oh, I've remembered!” the owner called out suddenly, “He forgot to pay us the bill!”

Paul had just left college and was offered an interview for a position in a company in New York. As he needed to move from Texas to New York if he got the job, he wanted to talk about the decision with someone before accepting it. But his parents had died. He remembered that his father had suggested he should turn to an old friend of his family if he needed advice.
The older man said, “Go to New York and have the interview. But I want you to go on a train and I want you to get a private compartment(车厢). Don't take anything to write with, anything to listen to or anything to read, and don't talk to anybody except when you order the meal. Call me when you get to New York and I will tell you what to do next.”
At first, Paul followed the advice closely. The trip took two days. As he had brought along nothing to do, he quickly became bored. He realized he was being forced into quite time – he could do nothing but think. About three hours outside New York City he broke the rules, asked for a pencil and paper and kept writing down the thoughts until the train arrived in New York.
Paul called the family friend from the train station.
“Thank you, Uncle I know what you wanted. You wanted me to think. And now I know what to do.”“I guessed you could understand my idea, Paul,” came the reply, “Good luck.”
Now, years later, Paul runs a company in New York. And he always spends a couple of days being alone with no phone, no television and no people to think quietly.

   There were two McDonalds—Mac and Dick—and they were brothers. In 1948, they owned a restaurant in California, they liked working in the restaurant, but they got tired of the customers ordering so many different things to eat.
   “If we gave customers a smaller menu, we could make some of the food before they came, and they wouldn't have to wait so long for their meals," said one of the brothers. The other brother agreed and said, "And if we made the customers come to the counter, we wouldn't need any waiters or waitresses. We could also use plastic plates so there wouldn't be any washing-up.”
   These were such good ideas that McDonald brothers used them, and the customers were very pleased. They got their meals very quickly—in less than a minute—and they paid only 15 cents for hamburgers and 10 cents for fries. The first McDonald's restaurant had no seats for customers to sit on. This meant that people had to take their food away, and that no one had to clean up any tables after them.
   Then a man called Ray Kroc came to the brothers and asked to buy their business. They agreed to sell it to him for＄27 million. After that, people paid Ray Kroc to open their own restaurants using the McDonald's name and menu. Before long, there were McDonald's restaurants all over the United States, and nowadays, they are all over the world—even in China and Russia. The most successful McDonald's business is in Hong Kong of China. The Hong Kong McDonald's sells more hamburgers every day than any other McDonald's anywhere else in the world.
   McDonald's restaurants are so successful because children love going to them. They like the food, and they like the toys and games they can get at McDonald's.

One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him to plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but he did not know where to plant it.

Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place. "What's the difference?" the farmer said angrily and then told what he had thought.

"Yes, "said the friend, "but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have robbed everyone of the fruit, but also you have destroyed(毁掉) a good apple tree!"

Some people in the world are still living with hunger. As many as 815 million people in the world didn't have enough food in 2016.

Heifer international wants to end world hunger. It began in 1930 when an American farmer went to Spain to help people in need. These people often went hungry in the war. That framer, Dan West, tried to use milk to feed these hungry people. And there was a continuous(持续的)need to feed people. This got him to think that what they needed was not a cup, but a cow.

In 1939, West went back to Indiana and decided to find ways to stop hunger. He thought about giving animals to the hungry people as a gift. Then they can feed and sell the animals for money. Only then could there be an end to hunger.

On Heifer international's website (https://www.heifer.org), you will see a lot of animals you can buy to help those in need. But not just cows, goats, and pigs are for sale. You can also buy fish, or even honeybees! More importantly, you are not just buying an animal for one person. You are buying what can help at least 1000 families. Each gift could make a continuous change.

But Heifer International's work doesn't end there. They will work with communities(社区) until they don't need outside help. If everyone works together(一起), maybe hunger really can end.
