Today is the fifth day of the new term. It {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(rain) when I was on my way home after school. 

 {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(luck), I took my umbrella with me. When I passed a corner (拐角) near my house, I saw {#blank#}3{#/blank#} old man. He was carrying an umbrella and a basket of {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(apple). Suddenly I heard someone crying for help. I turned and saw the apples {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(fall) to the ground(地面), and the old man fell down. I helped {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(he) stand up right away, picked {#blank#}7{#/blank#} the apples and put them back into the basket. After that, I sent the old man to his house. When we arrived at his home, my  {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (foot) were both wet in the rain. He said, "Many thanks  {#blank#}9{#/blank#}you! You are such a {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(help) boy!" I was very happy because I helped someone in need.

Mr Chen is a farmer who lives in {#blank#}1{#/blank#} China with his wife and two sons. One year ago, he had cancer. The doctor told him that he needed a(n) {#blank#}2{#/blank#}at once, and it would cost much money. Chen's family is very poor. The situation seemed{#blank#}3{#/blank#}.

Two weeks later, however, Mr Chen {#blank#}4{#/blank#}some good news. He {#blank#}5{#/blank#} about a health care project which provides medical {#blank#}6{#/blank#} for poor families in China. They only need to pay half the cost or even {#blank#}7{#/blank#}

Thanks to the project and the kindness of his family and neighbours, Mr Chen was able to receive an operation to prevent the illness from getting worse. Now he {#blank#}8{#/blank#} to his family. So far, the project {#blank#}9{#/blank#} more than 5,000 people receive medical aid. The Chinese government {#blank#}10{#/blank#}together with other countries and international organizations to do this at present. They hope to develop a new health care model for China.

I am Mandy and I live in the city with my parents and my little sister. The city life is boring sometimes. I love going to my grandmother's village(村庄). 

It is so much fun living in the village. I like collecting leaves (收集树叶) there. I usually do it on my way to the only shop in the village. They have many different shapes. Some are like a heart and some are like a hand. . . I can make a lot of things with leaves. One fun thing is making leaf pictures. 

This is how I make a leaf picture. I take a leaf out and I also need paper, glue (胶水), a brush(刷子) and paints (绘画颜料). First, I glue the leaf onto the paper and wait for an hour. Then, I paint over the leaf and the paper and let the paints get dry(变干). Next, I take the leaf off the paper. There it is—a beautiful leaf picture on the paper!

I sometimes make birthday cards or other things with the leaf pictures. My friends like them very much. I tell them，"They are not just gifts from me. They're gifts from my grandmother's village！"

Many traditional Chinese festivals remind us of the special foods. As zongzi are to Dragon Boat Festival and mooncakes are to Mid-Autumn Festival, yuanxiao—sweet dumplings made of sticky rice flour—are special to Lantern Festival.

Lantern Festival usually falls on the 15^th of the first lunar month, marking the end of the Spring Festival celebrations. Apart from the round-shaped yuanxiao, another beloved part of the celebration is the lanterns, which come in almost every possible size and shape.

"Guessing lantern riddles(谜语)" is an essential(必不可少的) part of the festival. Lantern owners write riddles on a piece of paper and post them on the lanterns. If visitors have answers to the riddles, they can pull the paper out and go to the lantern owners to check their answers. If they are right, they will get a little gift. The activity emerged(出现) during people's enjoyment of lanterns in the Song Dynasty(960–1279). As riddle guessing was interesting and full of wisdom, it became popular among all social strata(阶层).

Lantern Festival was at its peak in the Tang and Song dynasties. It was a day of great fun at the time. In the evening, people went into the streets with all kinds of lanterns, watching lion or dragon dances, eating yuanxiao and setting off firecrackers.

The festival also provided a chance for unmarried young girls to go out freely in search of their true love, since they weren't normally allowed to do so. The famous poet Ouyang Xiu recorded this romantic tradition with the well-known line:"Atop the willow tree hangs the moon;my date comes in the evening soon."

If you' re into sports, you' ve seen it happen — tennis players jump over the net to shake hands after a hard match; football players exchange jerseys(运动衣) after ninety minutes of knocking each other around; even boxers touch gloves at the beginning of each round. Players in every event, from spelling bees to golf, act in this way. It's all part of sportsmanship(体育精神), a great tradition in sports and competition. It means playing and being calm all through the match.

 Everyone feels great when they win. In the last few years, you might see some players celebrate a goal with a long victory dance or talk big about their ability. However, it's always hard for people to say in public that they made a bad play. Good sportsmanship is what they really need. It's the golden rule of sports.

Good sportsmanship means that you play by the rules, talk politely to everyone during games and stay cool even when you lose the game. At the school sports meeting, for example, it's more important for you to know how to work as part of a team and cheer your teammates on. That may help you enjoy more success at your future work. In competition— as in life— you may not always win, but believe me, sportsmanship will help you get through, and there is always the next match.
