We were enjoying the summer vacation on the beaches of beautiful Gulf shores Alabama. My oldest daughter was about 6 years old and the youngest was 3. We bought a two-man inflatable boat thinking this would make for a really fun day for the two girls. And so it did. The two of them played all day in that boat.

Not far from us, a middle-aged man was taking a sunbath, greeting us with a smile now and then. Later the little one got tired and was beginning to look pretty pink with too much sun. So, I took her to our spot on the sand and placed an umbrella over her as my older girl continued to play in the boat. I probably became a little too involved with my younger daughter and spent a little too much time not noticing what was going on the small distance to the water. But as I looked l became concerned as I saw the little boat had moved far out from the shore with my oldest daughter in it. I called to her to come in closer to shore but she seemed to be too frightened to accomplish just that. We hadn't thought to buy any oars for the boat. Her little arms were too short to reach across the boat and into the water. All she could do was paddle hard to one side and was just making small circles.

About this time, others on the beach noticed this but no one seemed to be doing anything but watching. Being a pitiful swimmer, I was standing as far out in the water as I could. Shouting instructions to her with no success. I watched her float farther out to sea and prayed to God. "Lord. I don't believe you gave me this beautiful child for me to watch her float out to sea. Lord, please save her!"

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow(乌鸦)perched(栖息)on their window.

The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.

After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I have just now told you, it's a crow!”

After a little while, the old father again asked his son for the third time, “What is this?”

At this time some expression of irritation(恼怒)was felt in the son's tone when he said to his father with a rebuff(生硬回绝). “It's a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this?”

This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times 'IT IS A CROW'. Are you not able to understand this?”

A little while later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的)diary, which he had maintained since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:

“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel irritated but I rather felt affection for my innocent son,

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping(哭泣) sorrowfully(悲伤地) when she thought of the scolding(责骂) from her mother. Having wandered(游荡) aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand(货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh(叹气) and had to leave. The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?" "Oh, yes, but I don't have money on me," she replied.

"That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man "Come in." The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. "What is it?" asked the man kindly. "Nothing. Actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped(擦拭) her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless(无情的) compared to a stranger!" Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude(感激) to her?" Jenny sat there, speechless and numb(麻木的) with shock; she remembered her mother's familiar face and weathered (变形)hands. "Why didn't I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted(感激的). Why haven't I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?" On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home

A few years ago I worked in an international company that sold computer devices. I had to travel a lot over the country as a part of my work. I remember that I was at a stage of my life where I only cared about how to make more money.

On one of my trips, I came to the airport to take a bus to downtown, as usual. It was the same routine: get into the city, take the bus to the hotel, visit the customer, work late, take the bus back to the airport and fly back…That day, for some reasons, I decided to take the stairs down to a different exit, where I came across a beautiful garden I had never seen before. I waited there, enjoying the scenery. Finally the bus came.

Usually I always took the seat behind the driver. That day I sat down somewhere in the middle. A boy was seated next to me, carrying a lot of suitcases. Suddenly, he turned to me and gave me one of the most sincere smiles I had ever seen from a stranger. Warmly, he said, "hi, the perfect day in the perfect place, huh?"

I remember thinking to myself this must be one of those typical people who is young and naive and just thinks everything is beautiful and easy. Why was he annoying me when I just wanted to enjoy the bus ride? But out of politeness, I replied, "Perfect! Did your parents pay for you to have some vacations on the beach?" "No, I'm not here for vacation, and I don't have parents," He shook his head, "I'm here because I want to achieve my biggest dream. I'm on the way to the army school where my grandfather studied a long time ago."

"I lost my dad 10 years ago then my mom married again. My stepfather…

16-year-old Lisa hated looking at herself in the mirror. She was not comfortable in her own skin and feared people would label her "ugly" after seeing the burn scar on her face. It hurt her every time she had to recall that tragedy where her face was badly burned in a big fire. She enjoyed being alone, lost in books and melodies on her guitar. Shortly after Lisa's 15th birthday, Chris, Lisa's father, was stricken by a severe illness and lost his ability to walk. However, Chris managed to provide for the family. He sent his daughters to school and did everything possible to improve their lives. But their difficulties never ceased, mainly after he had to spend much on his mother's heart treatment. It appeared as though fate had only terrible plans for this family.

Lisa knew everything, and she couldn't bear to watch her daddy struggling so much. She wanted to help relieve her family's burden. "What can I do to improve our lives?" Lisa lost in deep thought. One day, a leaflet promoting a local music contest landed on Lisa's foot. Lisa's eyes sparkled with hope when she read it and saw that the cash prize was $25,000.

Lisa secretly registered for the music contest. Over the years, she had been passionate about music, skilled at playing the guitar and mastering numerous musical pieces. Now, she needed to compose an original song, sing it and accompany it with her guitar. Lisa locked herself in her room in her spare time, preparing for the contest. In her original composition, she illustrated the joyful moments spent with her family, and she emphasized her heart felt gratitude for her father's contribution to the entire household. Her lyrics over-flowed with genuine emotion. She tirelessly worked on the song, determined to perfect her performance. With the date for the contest approaching, Lisa spent more time on her preparations. She seemed no longer afraid to look at herself in the mirror. She often stood in front of the mirror, practiced her song and imagined her performance on the stage. Hopefully, she thought she would give her father a big surprise.

It was the first day of our new grade. Everyone in the classroom was chatting happily, excited to see each other again after the long holidays. When the door slid open, all of us stopped talking and turned to look. In came our teacher Ms. Sullivan, followed by an ordinary-looking boy.

"This boy's name is Rafae." Ms, Sullivan announced. "He's a transfer student(转校生), and he's going to be in our class starting from today. Make sure all of you welcome him warmly."

The class clapped. But I didn't want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he had no outstanding qualities considering his small figure and casual T-shirt.

"Ob,I forgot to mention one thing." Ms Sullivan spoke up. "Rafael actually has hearing problems. Normally he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken. His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Rafael insisted on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him, you have to write t on a piece of paper."

This single speech sent the whole class up into an uproar(嘈杂). Some students looked at each other with expressions of surprise. Others voiced cries of concern out of pity.

Ms Sullivan calmed everyone down. I'd like someone to personally help him out throughout the day. Do I have any volunteers?"

"How can a disabled person be intelligent?" I thought to myself. I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything. Dead silence spread across the classroom.

It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms. Sullivan's.

"How about you, James?" She asked me. "Is it okay for you to take care of Rafael just for today?"

It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed and nodded slightly. Ms. Sullivan gestured for Rafael to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Immediately, the class became excited.
