A young man from a village called Nawalapitiya married a young woman from Maiyuwa, a small village. They lived with the man's big family—his parents, his brothers, their wives and children. The family kept an elephant, in which the woman soon took a great interest. Every day she fed it with fruit and sugar.

    Three months later, having quarreled with her husband, the woman went back to her parents' home. Soon the elephant refused to eat and work. It appeared to be ill and heartbroken. One morning after several weeks the animal disappeared from the house.

    It went to the woman's home. On seeing her, the elephant waved its trunk and touched her with it. The young woman was so moved by the act of the animal. So she went back to her husband's home.

Several times each year the Queen gives afternoon tea parties at which guests are served tiny cakes filled with cream from her own cows. Cakes and sandwiches are bought in by footmen, yet you never see the Queen touch a thing. She

simply sits beside a big silver plate, pouring cups of tea for everyone and carefully avoiding the cakes.

At cocktail parties the Queen moves from group to group, chatting informally, and manages to make one glass of diet drink to last a whole evening. Tours abroad are difficult because hosts seem to believe the warmth of their welcome must be shown with wonderful state banquets(宴). But the Queen has perfected the art of appearing to enjoy her meal without actually eating much. During one visit to the Pacific islands of Tonga, a specially-prepared dinner was set up in   a hut made of wood and bamboo leaves. Deep holes were dug in the ground, filled with hot stones and baby pigs, and the pigs were slowly cooked with dry heat over several days. The Queen looked uneasily at her plate when she discovered a   whole roast(烤) pig was her serving.

Then she became uneasy when a turkey, some meat, bananas and an apple were also carried in for each guest. So she depended on her old favourite trick of talking with her host, King Tupou IV, carrying on a warm conversation. At the same time she pushed her food around her plate and only ate a piece of turkey and some fruit.

Reporters traveling with her have noticed that the Queen will sometimes seem so interested in a foreign leader's political(政治的) chat that she simply never has time to finish a meal before it is time to get up and make her speech. She will lift her fork, then put it down again to make another point, leaving almost all of her meal untouched.

On a sunny day, three old men with long white beards (胡子) knocked the door of a small and old house. When a woman opened the door, she found she 1 met them before. She said, "I don't think I know you, but you look tired. Please come in and 2 ."

"We do not go into a house together," they replied. 

"Why?" she asked. 

One of the old men explained, "His name is Wealth, and he is Success, and I am Love. You need to 3 your family which you want to invite."

The woman went back into the house and told her husband about it. Her husband was very 4 . "How nice!", he said. "Let us invite Wealth. He 5 fill our home with money!" His wife disagreed, "My dear, why don't we invite Success?" Their daughter suggested, "Wouldn't it be better to invite Love? Our 6 will be filled with love." "Let us take our daughter's 7 ", said the husband. Then, they went out and invited Love. 

Love got up and walked into the house. The other two also got up and 8 him. The woman asked Wealth and Success in surprise, "I only invited Love. Why are you coming in?" The old men replied together, "9 you invite Wealth or Success, the other two of us will stay out. But you invited Love. Wherever he goes, we go with him. Where there is Love, there is 10 Wealth and Success!" 

Martin Strel is a swimmer, who is best known for swimming the big rivers. Martin holds Guinness World Records for swimming the Danube River, the Mississippi River, the Yangtze River and the Amazon River. 

Of all his achievements (成就), the greatest is his Amazon River swim: The Amazon is one of the largest and most dangerous rivers in the world. Many swimmers failed to swim it. Martin decided to make history and show the world that people could achieve their dreams with hard work and perseverance (毅力). 

On 8th April 2007, Martin completed his Amazon River swim all the way. He spent 67 days swimming about 3, 274 miles in total. His hard work and perseverance at last bore fruit. He became a big shot as well as a worldwide hero. 

Many people still cannot believe what he has done so far and they describe him as"the Craziest Man in the World". In 2009, American filmmakers produced a documentary called Big River Man. And the book, The Man Who Swam the Amazon, has been sold in many countries. The story of Martin's perseverance and hard work has encouraged many people. 

Does Martin swim for money? That's not the truth. Instead, he wants to teach people about the importance of keeping water clean. Martin has always been looking for the challenges of the impossible. What is his next?

It does not always come easy to discover oneself. From a young age, I had a strong sense of who I was to become, 1  an accident made me redefine(重新定义) myself. To me, skating was above all. There was 2  in this world that filled my heart with such joy. I spent twenty-four hours a week practising my 3 . I have no social life or interests but skating, and skating brought me gold medals in nearly every 4 . 

Unluckily, in one show, I fell down and hurt myself 5 . After several X-rays and MRI scans(扫描), the 6  told me that I couldn't return to my sport any more. The pain in my back was hard to bear, and even the 7  daily tasks became difficult. 

As my passion(激情) was 8 , I had little sense of who I was to become. After eight months of suffering, something had to 9 . Instead of wasting my days sitting around painfully, I began to put my 10  into local community service projects. By volunteering 11  a swimming teacher and a summer reading assistant for kids, I got an idea of who I 12  to become. After a few months, I spent time on my interest in the arts. Little by little, I 13  out of the shadow(阴影) and rebuilt my confidence. 

Sometimes, some 14  rocks may in our way. We can choose to stay behind or try to climb over. My accident was a rock that 15  to stop me from reaching success. Today I'm a very confident person and feel hopeful about the future.
