"Why do I live? Why do I wish for anything, or do anything? Is there anything in my life that will not be destroyed by my death?" Like Leo Tolstoy, the famous Russian writer, many people ask these difficult questions. Tolstoy spent his whole life trying to answer these difficult questions.
As a young man, he thought people could achieve perfection if they tried hard enough. So he worked very hard to be the best in everything. He thought that he would find meaning and truth in success.
In the 1850s, Tolstoy wrote his first stories. He wrote about his life in the army. He also told stories about his childhood. These works were published and Tolstoy became a well-known writer.
He earned the respect he always wanted. Many rich and smart men met and talked with Tolstoy. Some of them were writers like him. They talked a lot about faith (信仰) and the meaning of life. But soon Tolstoy recognized that these men were not perfect. Now he knew they could not answer his questions about faith.
So in the 1860s, Tolstoy tried a different way to find the meaning of life. He opened a school for the children of his serfs-the people who worked on his land. These workers were very poor. He wanted to help them because he thought they were more honest than the rich people he knew.
Tolstoy learned a lot from his workers. He understood how they worked hard to support their families. He began to believe that marriage and family would give his life meaning. So in 1862, Leo Tolstoy married a young woman named Sonya Behrs.
The next 15 years were the best years of Tolstoy's life. It was during this time that he wrote his most famous books-War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Many experts say that War and Peace is one of the greatest books ever written. In these books, Tolstoy believed humans should live a simple life and take care of their families. Tolstoy thought this would satisfy him and bring him happiness.
Leo Tolstoy is still a very respected writer today. His faith and writings have influenced many people all over the world.

▲ We are pleased to announce the results of our competition to create a new school festival for students to celebrate this year. This competition, which we have had twice, has been a huge success. But this year, we have had more entries (参赛作品) than ever before! We have received many wonderful suggestions, including one that suggested there should be a festival of shoes! This was certainly a creative idea, but not surprisingly, our judges (裁判) liked other suggestions more! The winning suggestion was from Henry Chan, who suggested that there should be a festival of bicycles. It was the judges' favorite. Henry, who is in Grade Eight, said that he went to school by bicycle every day and enjoyed taking bicycle trips very much. He added that so many public bicycles were in use in our city that it would be a shame not to celebrate them. As part of the festival, a bicycle trip will be organized in the city. Then students will hold a ten-meter bicycle riding competition, in which anyone who can ride the slowest wins. What's more, you students are called on to ride bicycles to school as often as possible. The Bicycle Festival will be from June 18th and last two days. We hope you will take part in the festival and do your bit to protect our environment! |

When I was a child, I was never really very interested in nature. Then one day my aunt bought me a {#blank#}1{#/blank#} for my birthday. It was called Birding on Borrowed Time. When she gave it to me, I was a little {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. It didn't seem very interesting, and I wanted new games for my phone. My aunt made me promise {#blank#}3{#/blank#} it. So I did, and I loved it. I found it was so interesting that I {#blank#}4{#/blank#} forgot about time. In fact, I didn't do anything else {#blank#}5{#/blank#} I finished it-- no TV, no games, nothing. As soon as I finished the book,I went out and bought a pair of binoculars(望远镜).
After that, I {#blank#}6{#/blank#} watching birds was one of the most interesting things in the world. To watch the birds, I needed to read books to learn about birds. Now I know more birds' {#blank#}7{#/blank#} than before. I can tell what they look like, how they fly and where to find {#blank#}8{#/blank#}.
Watching birds is interesting but not {#blank#}9{#/blank#}. Sometimes I have to stay in one place for a long time, and I have to take heavy binoculars and cameras with me. But when you find a beautiful bird and {#blank#}10{#/blank#} photos of it, it is really exciting.
