It was only a dollar. Ben saw it on the floor as he sat at the back of his math class. He could take it for his money, but he picked it up 1  and brought it to his teacher, Mattison.

Mattison was a little surprised, 2  many people would just keep it. She advised Ben to tape（用胶带粘住）it to the whiteboard where she always put 3  things. Maybe the dollar was the money for lunch or bus tickets for the student who lost it. A day or two later, neither the teacher nor her student 4  it.

Rose, a senior, asked Mattison why it was there. The teacher was still waiting for the owner, so she 5 , "I don't know." Rose took the tape from Mattison's desk and taped a 6 dollar to the board.

The two dollar bills, side by side, woke some things in Mattison's students. They taped up7 bills. The experienced teacher started to leave the tape next to the whiteboard. The effort（努力）snowballed and it really made a great difference.

The amount（数量）went on growing until it 8 $175. That left Mattison to decide on the best 9 . Mattison asked her students if they'd like to use the money 10 something good. Their answer was to tape more money to the whiteboard to push the amount.

"Please take my penny (便士)," Maggie said to old Dan, the fisherman, who sat on a bench repairing his nets (网). "Please take it," she said again. Old Dan smiled, and took it. "Thank you, little girl," he said.

After that, Maggie went to the beach to collect sea shells. She never thought how fast time went by. Two hours later, she sat down on a rock beside a little pool, and Dan's large dog Rover jumped down from a rock! He made a loud noise, and then began to pull her coat gently. "Rover wishes me to leave here, I see," she said, and she rose from the rock and began to go home. However, she found the place she had got down easily was now very difficult to climb up, and because the tide (潮水) had been in for some time, she found some of the stones wet and smooth.

What could poor Maggie do? She felt sad and cried, but the tide made a much louder noise than she could make. Rover jumped upon a big stone and raised his loud bark until even the tide could not drown (淹没) it. Finally, Dan heard the loud barking of the dog. He came in a boat and brought Maggie and Rover safely to the land!

"It was the penny that did it, madam," Dan said to Maggie's mother later. "I saw Rover looking at her when she put the penny so kindly into my hand—just as if he would have said, ‘Rover will be your friend now, little girl.' And I am thinking he has looked after her all day, because he never came near me after that."

Some years later, Rover came to Maggie's home with a little note, in which was written—"Will Maggie help Rover?—his master (主人) is dead."

 There are about 180,000 words in the Oxford English Dictionary, but most of us only know a few thousand of them. That's why we often want to get the answer of" how to improve vocabulary". Here are some ways to improve your vocabulary.

Watch English movies

 Watching the English movies is a vocabulary booster. If you see the movie of your favourite book, you will have a better understanding of the words in it. You read something and then you see it on the screen. You will remember better because you have a visual representation.

Get out of the house

 Going to new places and doing something new are great ways to build new knowledge. When you open your eyes to new people and things, you also get new words from them.

Join a book club

 In a book club, you have to spend some time reading. Read as many kinds of books as you can and you will learn more new words in different areas. Don't forget to write the new words down. Try to remember and use them.

Last year, I worked in a middle school near my mother's house, and I stayed with her for a month. During that time, I helped her do some {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (家务活） and buy some food.

When Mum got home, I told her she didn't need to keep it a {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(秘密）from me. And she told me something about the children. Some of them lived with an old lady in a small house, and the{#blank#}8{#/blank#}（其他的）children slept on the street. For years, she was helping the poor street children by giving them food. After she told me everything, I was so moved by how great she was. She helped them in need. Being her son, I took{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (骄傲）in my mum. 

I {#blank#}10{#/blank#}（继续） to buy food for my mum after that. But I always added one more bag for her. 

Evan has to travel 20 miles a day to school by bike with his father.

A newspaper reported Evan's story and most people14 it. Now, Evan will go to a new place at a new school to15 in September. It's the nearest one to his new home
