My son Ben had barely heard of his cousins Marcia and Juli before we moved to their hometown. Since wed become neighbors, I thought he should get to know them. So, I invited the cousins over for a meet-and-greet one afternoon.

When the bell rang, Ben rushed to open the door. In came Marcia, a chatty, retired schoolteacher in her 70s. Dragging behind her, relying heavily on his walking stick, was her over-eighty-year-old husband Juli, who used to be a sports lover. Not having seen him since I'd become a mom, I wondered whether he was kid-friendly. With one glance, I quickly decided that he probably wasn't.

After the introductions, we sat down to have a chat. Ben, who was 4 at the time, stared curiously at the cousins. Suddenly, he eyed Julis walking stick, which stood right beside his chair. "Why do you have a stick? " he asked abruptly.

Juli paused for a while as he hadn't expected my son to speak to him. Then he seemed pleased that Ben had noticed something about him. He briefly explained, and invited Ben to try out the walking stick. Excited, Ben stepped up, took it in hand and walked with it around the room. The serious look on Julis face softened as he watched. That afternoon, Ben popped in and out of the room several times to have fun with his new friend. Toward the end of the visit, Ben sneaked over to Juli, wordlessly climbed onto his lap and gave him a hug. After a little surprise, Julis lips curved into a subtle smile.

During the following two years, Juli often came to babysit Ben. The two would call each other buddy and laughed loudly together, even though one was much older.

One summer evening, unexpectedly, I received a painful call saying that Juli had just passed away, which came as a shock to me. I gently told Ben about the terrible loss, explaining that Juli was 85. "That was so young!" Ben shouted between tears.

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.

“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone yelled.

Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.

Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊) through the smoke.

They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.

Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik, Malay for auntie. Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas(睡衣;宽长裤)—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

"She might have run for safety like everyone else!" Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. I know Makcik's still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!"

Grandpa Cecil Rodgers has narrowly escaped a phone scam (欺骗). It all began with a telephone call…

Cecil is an elderly man from Cincinnati, Ohio, who was looking forward to spending time with his family over the holidays. They were all coming to visit him at his Elmwood Place home, including his adult grandson David. One afternoon, while napping in bed, he was awakened by the sharp ringing of his telephone.

"Who will ring me up at this time?" He wondered. Peering towards the phone, he hesitantly picked it up. From the receiver came an urgent voice. "Grandpa, this is David. I am in trouble." Before Cecil could ask him any question, he continued, on and off, half crying, "I hit a woman's car and she was seven months pregnant. And they charged me with drunken driving and I'm in prison..." He sobbed loudly. His voice was so broken that Cecil could hardly match it with the gentle and warm voice of his grandson. Poor David! He must be suffering! Cecil panicked immediately.

Without more detailed communication, the phone passed suddenly to another person— David's lawyer who had a deeper voice. Seemingly, he understood Cecil's anxiety and attempted to comfort him with a solution. "Now the only way to help David is to go to Wal-Mart and transfer $2,300 to another store. I would pick up the money and then use it to post David's bail (保释金)." "I am sure everything would be OK as long as the money is in place," he added. Ultimately, he lowered his voice, "Don't tell anybody. You don't want to make your grandson look ugly in your neighborhood." The lawyer hung up even before Cecil could give an answer.

If there was one thing more than another that Brenda wanted for her birthday, it was a pair of skates. How she hoped her parents would give her a pair!

In vain (徒劳) her mother explained that Brenda might not learn to use them as easily as other children, and that she might fall many times and perhaps hurt herself before she could skate properly. Brenda wanted skates and that was that. She thought about skates all day and dreamed about skates all night. She pictured herself skating to school and home, skating to the stores for Mother, and skating all over the yard.

Her birthday came at last, and with it the precious package which she had been eager for. Before she opened it, she guessed there were skates inside. And there were — beautiful new shiny skates. Just her size, too. Brenda was on cloud nine. She felt she had never been so happy in all her life.

And now it was time to practice with them. Hardly was breakfast over when she was out on the smooth concrete(水泥地)."At last,"she thought,"I am going to skate! Hooray!"

Excitedly she put on her precious pairs of skates and eagerly she stood up. But only for a moment. Suddenly, to her great surprise, away went both her feet from under her. Down she went. Brenda stood up again. But hardly had she put one foot forward, when the other started running backward, and down she went again. This really hurt, and Brenda felt very much like crying. Slowly she got up once more despite the pain and started to walk with great care. But before she knew what was going on, she was sitting on the concrete again. She felt very sad, tears filling her eyes. All her hopes of skating to school and town like the other girls disappeared. She began to wish she had never asked for skates for her birthday. She cried, taking off the skates from her feet and throwing them inside the back door.

注意:续写词数应为150左右。

Mother saw all this and asked Brenda what was wrong.

……

Slowly Brenda put on the skates, got up and tried again.

Hearing that one neighbor had just welcomed a new litter, Allen, a9- year- old boy, rushed to see the newborn cats. However, during his visit, Allen noticed one of the cats wasn't moving due to disability on its hind(后面的)legs. So while the other little cats were exploring their surroundings, this one stayed behind.

Allen was significantly affected by the scene of this lonesome cat. He returned home and started to wonder whether he could do anything to help. When the boy told his mother about that, the mother recalled a video about pet wheelchairs.

They finally found the video on YouTube, in which an animal lover, Addy, shared a heartwarming and innovative project: building a wheelchair for a pet cat with mobility issues due to a hind- leg injury. As a caring pet owner, Addy took viewers through the DIY process of making a custom wheelchair to aid her cat's movement and improve its quality of life. She began by measuring the cat and based on the measurements, cut the plastic pipes to make a frame(支架). Then she connected the pipes and attached the wheels to the back end of the frame. Finally, she added a harness(保护带)to ensure it was fit and comfortable for the cat.

Seeing the cat in the wheelchair moving around happily with the support, Allen thought that would be the best option for the little cat.

But the wheelchair in the video seemed too big and too heavy for a newborn cat. Where could he find the suitable materials?

His mother unearthed an old bag from the cupboard, whose belt was just fine for the the harness. As for the frame, they searched the storage room in their house and found an old umbrella, whose frame provided enough thin iron bars that were durable and light. But they were difficult for him to cut off. Allen thought his father could help. However, where could they find the small wheels?【答案】

(320 words)

注意:

1.续写词数应为150左右:

2.请按如下格式在答题卷的相应位置作答。

Allen suddenly spotted a familiar item in the corner of the storage room.
