Most people have heard of the Great Wall of China, but not many people outside of China know about the Grand Canal.

This man-made waterway — known in China as Da Yunhe — is more than 1,700 kilometres long and some parts of it are more than 2,000 years old. It connects the north of China with Hangzhou, a city in the southern part of the country. It's the longest man-made waterway in the world.

It was built as a way to transport grain(谷物) from the rich agricultural land in China's south to cities in the north. In fact, it's not one canal, but a system of canals and rivers connected together. It's still an important part of the transport system in China. Thousands of boats use it every day to transport grain and many other types of cargo(货物).

Now the Chinese government is doing new work on the Grand Canal. It is making parts of it deeper, so bigger ships can use it. The canal will also help to move water. There is a lot of rain in the south of China, but not as much in the north. The canal will carry millions of litres of water from the south to the north.

The Grand Canal is much less famous than the Great Wall, and not very many tourists visit it. But it's possible to go on a cruise(乘船游览)along some of the oldest parts of the canal. Passengers on these cruises see beautiful parts of China that other visitors don't see.

Most people would stay away from bees while meeting them. However, if your goal (目标)is to grow a{#blank#}1{#/blank#} and productive (丰收的) garden, you will want to bring on bees. 

How to attract (吸引) bees? 

Plant! Plant! Plant! Plant not only {#blank#}2{#/blank#} but also flowers. Bees are attracted by colours and purple, yellow, white and blue are their{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. If possible, you should be careful to plant different flowers for bees to choose from. Be sure to plant some flowers in sunny areas. Bees like warm and bright places better than cool and dark ones. 

Another part of learning how to attract bees is to always leave a place for wild grass or flowers near your garden. This is where bees can live comfortably and{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. You can also design (设计) a bee house for the bees to live in. To do this, you can use several pieces of bamboo tied{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Place the house close to the ground because bees prefer living close to the ground. Preparing such a place can make sure that they will enjoy and never want to leave.

Be sure to leave water around for them to drink. Once the bees are there and active, you will have a fruitful garden. 

There is a bamboo weaving (竹编) club in Sanzao Central Primary School of Zhuhai. Bamboo weaving is one of Chinese traditional skills (传统技艺). The teachers in the club are local craftsmen (当地的手艺人). The students can use bamboo to make many beautiful things like paintings and animals.

Cheng Yangyi and his classmates join the club. He wants to make a bamboo fan."I must be very careful," he said. The thin strips (竹条) are too close or too far from each other. When he puts them together, he often makes mistakes (错误). Then he starts again and again." Sometimes I am angry, but I don't stop. After I finish my work, I jump happily. My classmates all come to see the fan and feel surprised." Cheng said." It's nice to learn and know more about Chinese traditional culture when I'm trying to make things with bamboo."

 You get into bed after a long day and plan to spend a few minutes on your phone before sleeping. However, falling asleep isn't as easy as expected. What's wrong?

 According to a new study, your phone may be the problem. Researchers asked 85 kids aged 11 to 14 to wear body cameras for a week, starting from three hours before bedtime. A second camera was placed in their bedrooms to monitor their phone use in bed. The kids also wore a device(设备) to record their sleep.

 Researchers found that 99% of the kids used their phones in the two hours before bed, over half used their phones while in bed, and about a third used them after trying to sleep. The results showed that screen time in bed put off kids' sleep by about half an hour and cut down on their total sleep time.

The influence was larger when they played games or used more than one screen.

"While the science guidelines (指南) suggest no screen time in an hour or two before bed, keeping phones out of the bedroom might help you get a better night's sleep," said the lead researcher, Bradley Brosnan.
