Here, a reporter is interviewing the 12-year-old singer, Mara Justine, who's one of the youngest contestants of America's Got Talent.
Reporter: Why did you choose to compete on America's Got Talent instead of one of the other singing competitions?
Mara: Well, America's Got Talent actually called me because I had auditioned before, when I was 9 or 10. I guess they looked over those videos. They asked me to audition again.
Reporter: How does it feel to be one of the youngest people on the show?
Mara: There are a lot of other people with more experience .,but I just try to do my best .I always go on to the stage thinking good thoughts, never bad thoughts.
Reporter: Who is your role model or idol(偶像) ? What inspires you?
Mara: For singing, my idols are Aretha Franklin and Christina Aguilera, but a role model to me would be my mom. I love her with all my heart—she encourages me to believe in my dreams.
Reporter: What are your other hobbies?
Mara: I love playing video games, and I usually go to the park with my family. We usually play basketball. We also like to play tennis!
JUST ASK I'm Patrick, but you can call me Pat. This is the space where I can help you with your daily life problems, one-on-one. Go ahead and ask away! |
Q Dear Patrick, My roommate, Jenny, doesn't wash her clothes much and they smelled. I don't know how to talk to her. What should I do? Lily |
A Hi, Lily. Problems like these are normal when people are living with roommates. I've lived with roommates before. If there is a problem, I make sure to speak up about it and not let the problem get worse. As the famous saying goes, "The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now." The same goes for good communication. You can find a good time to talk about it, like in the afternoon after classes. When you talk with her, try not to be angry about it. You can use a "compliment sandwich", something like, "You've been a good roommate so far, however I can't help but notice the smell coming from your clothes. Could you please make sure to wash them?" Again, it's far better to be honest and easy-going. Don't pretend the problem will go away. Pat |
Congratulations! You'll enter a new high school. Are you ready for the future life? Here is some advice for a new senior high school student.
Be a positive(乐观的) person
Positive attitudes(态度) can make you full of energy. Do remember to encourage yourself when you're down. You can keep your old friends close and make new friends with the students who make your life better and happier.
Make a plan
You might have more difficult courses but high school teachers won't take care of you like in junior high. Mostly, you have to learn by yourself. Getting enough sleep and exercising more are both important. You need to manage your time wisely. You'd better make a time plan or a calendar that can help.
Be responsible for yourself
There is always someone smarter, richer or better looking than you. I hope that you only pay attention to your own work. Please find out your goals and make them clear. Then stick to your decisions and be responsible for the results.
Help other students
Not everyone is going to be nice to you. But you should give him a hand when you find someone is in trouble. Giving makes each other closer and makes you more popular.

A Theme Park for Fall Outing
Here's an interview with two classmates, Jenny and Tom, discussing their choices for the class fall outing to a theme park.
◆Have you thought about which theme park we should visit for the class fall outing?
Jenny: Yes, Adventure World. It has a huge kinds of attractions like roller coasters, water rides, and even an animal exhibit. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} I think it'll keep the whole class entertained.
Tom: That's a great option! I'm considering FunLand. It's smaller, but they offer a lot of interactive (互动) experiences, like virtual (虚拟) reality games and live performances.
◆What do you think about the location?
Jenny: Adventure World is about two hours away by bus, which is a bit of a trip, but I think the attractions make it worth the drive. Plus, the scenery along the way could be nice.
Tom: FunLand is only an hour away from school, so it's more convenient. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}
◆Have you checked the cost?
Jenny: Yes, Adventure World offers a group discount (打折) for schools, so the entrance fee isn't too bad. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}
Tom: FunLand is cheaper in terms of the entrance fee, but the food and extra activities inside, like the VR games, are more expensive. We might need to bring some extra cash for food or souvenirs.
◆{#blank#}4{#/blank#}
Jenny: Adventure World has a great safety record. They have lifeguards for all activities. I also noticed they have a first-aid station near the entrance.
Tom: FunLand is also really good with safety. I've heard they're very strict with safety checks before anyone can get on the rides.
A. What about safety? B. What's your final decision? C. There's something for everyone. D. Plus, we could even bring our own snacks to save money. E. We could get there faster and have more time to enjoy the park. |
