Dear Dennis,

    We just want to say thank you for having us before we caught the plane last week. It was a nice evening, and we enjoyed {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Pete and Sarah. With your help we were able to get to the airport with plenty of time. We often tried to get an {#blank#}2{#/blank#} flight than usual, but it wasn't possible.

    We had {#blank#}3{#/blank#} holiday in Spain. We just loved driving {#blank#}4{#/blank#} the countryside, and we often {#blank#}5{#/blank#} to walk round a mountain village. We met {#blank#}6{#/blank#} friends, Bill and Sue, and they invited us to have a meal with them. They wanted us to stay with them, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} we couldn't, as we had already booked two {#blank#}8{#/blank#} in a hotel.

    The weather was nice. There {#blank#}9{#/blank#} so much beautiful sunshine all the time we were there. Leaving Spain was very sad. It made me want to cry.

    Anyway, we're looking forward to hearing from you, and hope to see you {#blank#}10{#/blank#}. Let me know if you're ever in the area. You must call in.

Deal with conflict(冲突)

    Losing friends is as easy as making friends if you don't know how to deal with anger and conflict. Conflict is part of everyone's {#blank#}1{#/blank#} . It will show up at school, at work and at home. It's OK to feel angry, annoyed(恼怒的) or sad. These feelings are {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, but different people deal with{#blank#}3{#/blank#} in different ways. Some people shout, call people names, or even hit the person who has {#blank#}4{#/blank#}them. Others do their best to keep away from dissension(纠纷) but very few deal with conflict {#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

    Dealing with conflict is a step-by-step progress. {#blank#}6{#/blank#} .you start talking about the problem, calm down, count to 10 and imagine a relaxing {#blank#}7{#/blank#} . Then, say what is really bothering(使...烦恼) you, but watch how you express yourself. Don't complain. Share {#blank#}8{#/blank#}.you feel by using 'I'. For example, don't say "You are always ordering me to do this or to do that," but "I feel sad {#blank#}9{#/blank#}  you don't pay attention to what I think." You want people to {#blank#}10{#/blank#}your opinion so make sure you practice what you want to say. Listen carefully to the other person and accept that he or she might see the problem in a different way.

    Be open minded and willing to say sorry.

    When a wolf was walking near a village, he met a dog. It {#blank#}1{#/blank#} to be a very bony(瘦骨嶙峋的)dog. The wolf had not been hungrier than usual. So he began to move {#blank#}2{#/blank#}towards the dog, while the dog backed away.

    "Let me remind you," said the dog. "it will be an unhappy thing for you to eat me now. Look at {#blank#}3{#/blank#}ribs(肋骨). I am nothing but skin and bone. But let me tell you something in private. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} a few days my master will give a wedding feast (宴会) for his only daughter.

    You can guess how fine and fat I will be on the leftovers(残羹剩饭) from the table.

Then it will be the best time for you {#blank#}5{#/blank#} me."

    The wolf couldn't help thinking how nice it would be to cat a fine and fat dog instead of the bony one. So he went away.

    Some days later, the wolf came back for the promised feast. He found the dog in his {#blank#}6{#/blank#}yard, and asked him to come out and was ready to eat him.

    "Sir," said the dog. "I shall be glad to have you cat me. I will be out as {#blank#}7{#/blank#}as

the porter(看门的人) opens the door."

    {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the "porter" was a huge dog to be very unkind towards wolves, which the wolf knew by a {#blank#}9{#/blank#}experience. He learnt an important lesson {#blank#}10{#/blank#}what you can get when you can get it. So he decided not to wait and ran away as fast as possible.

Fleming saw many soldiers die from infections (感染) in their wounds as he worked in a hospital during World War I. This made Fleming decide to find a way to help the body fight infections. 

In September 1928, Fleming left some glass dishes on a bench in his laboratory for two weeks. When he came back, he noticed something puzzling. Bacteria (细菌) were growing on all the glass dishes except one. On this dish mould (霉菌) had started to grow—the kind found on old bread. The mould seemed to be giving off something that stopped the bacteria from growing. Fleming called it "mould juice". He tried it on other bacteria, and it killed them, too. Fleming became wild with joy and named it penicillin. 

Unfortunately, Fleming's boss thought he was wasting his time and it was impossible to kill bacteria at that time. Fleming did a few more experiments with penicillin, and he also wrote about it so other scientists could learn about it. However, because no one seemed interested in his discovery, he forgot about penicillin and started to work on other things. 

In 1939, Ernest Chain, a scientist, and his boss, Howard Florey, were looking for medicines that could kill bacteria. They discovered Fleming's notes and decided to test penicillin. In 1940, they gave penicillin to some sick mice, who survived later. But those who didn't get it died. Florey declared: "It looks like a miracle!" By 1943, the final tests on humans were finished successfully and the world had its first antibiotic (抗生素) medicine.

There were no {#blank#}1{#/blank#} that afternoon. Henry went to a clothes shop near his home. The shop {#blank#}2{#/blank#} many jackets. He looked at {#blank#}3{#/blank#} and found a very nice one. He told the shopkeeper (店主) to put it into a bag.

At that time his friend Bruce came into the shop. They didn't see each other for a long time. They were so {#blank#}4{#/blank#} to meet again that they forgot everything. Soon they were busy {#blank#}5{#/blank#} with each other. And they talked {#blank#}6{#/blank#}. It was six o' clock, so they wanted to go and have {#blank#}7{#/blank#} together. They walked to the door. The shopkeeper stopped them and asked Henry to pay for the jacket. Henry looked at him in {#blank#}8{#/blank#} at first, but soon he remembered that he didn't pay for it. He said {#blank#}9{#/blank#}. And he gave him the {#blank#}10{#/blank#} and then left the shop with his friend.

Eddie was excited to wait for the mountain bike race. He trained hard for a long time. Perhaps he would finally win this year.

When Eddie heard "Go!", he got away quickly. The road was with lots of sudden turns, but Eddie was ready for them. As he went around the last corner (拐角) , he realized his friend Riley was the only rider in front of him. Eddie tried harder and overtook Riley. Then he was in the lead. Eddie could see the finish line at the top of the next hill. People began to cheer and Eddie heard his father's voice.

After a short while, Eddie heard a cry. He saw Riley lying on the road with his bike on top of him. Any minute now, the other riders would rush to him over the hill. But Eddie jumped off his bike and ran to help Riley. Luckily he was not hurt. Then they quickly moved Riley's bike off the road. The other riders sped (加速) past the finish line and Eddie heard a cheer for the winner.

Slowly, Eddie pushed his bike to the finish line. His eyes watered with disappointment (失望) . Then, to his surprise, Eddie saw people cheering for him. And there was his dad, with the proudest (最骄傲的) smile of all. He said loudly "..."
