Four years ago, when Ted was sixty years old, he retired (退休). He had worked in a restaurant for thirty-three years. He left and returned to his home village. Then he bought a small piece of farm and planted a lot of apple trees on it. He takes care of them and this year there are plenty of apples in the trees. The old man is very happy.

But these days the old man has been worried. Nearly every night his garden is broken into and quite a few apples have been lost. So he decided to try his best to catch the thief himself. He was struggling(费劲) to tie his shoes. I was struggling with whether I should help him. I did, and he was grateful.
“Thank you,” he said.
“I'm glad I could help. I just thought it would be easier for me to reach,” I said.
He was a disabled man, and forced to look down most of the time. His arms and legs were twisted(扭曲的) terribly, and he couldn't do what the rest of us would consider easy tasks. He always managed to look up to see how you reacted(反应) to his words, however. He had a big smile, making me feel comfortable.
I was still on my knees by his wheelchair.
“ Nice shoes,” he said.
“Thanks. No one ever complimented (赞美) me on them before,” I said.
“No one has the same view of the world as I do,” he replied.
“Tell me about the world as you see it,” I said smiling.
“Most people can see if someone is comfortable with them or not in their eyes. I see it in their feet.” he said. “If people keep moving their feet, I just let them go, because I know they're impatient with me. I don't want to make people uncomfortable.
“What about me? I asked.
“I could see your compassion. And then you came down to my level. I was the one who was nervous.” he said. “I don't normally have someone look me in the eye.”
“They don't know what they're missing,” I told him.
“My old face is nothing to brag(自夸) about.” he said.
“But that smile is so big.”
Yes, and it's not only a big smile but an attitude.

Martin Lynch, an American businessman, had been going on vacation to a small Mexican fishing village for a number of years. One morning while going for a walk along the beach, he saw his friend Pablo Perez, a local fisherman. Martin watched Pablo unload his boat and pack the fish in a box.
Martin noticed Pablo was smiling and looked very happy. He could also see several large fish in the boat. Martin greeted Pablo and asked how long it took to catch the fish. “Just a few hours,” replied Pablo. Martin asked, “Why didn't you stay longer and catch more fish?” “I have enough for my family,” Pablo said. “And what do you do with the rest of your day?” asked Martin. “I take a nap, play with my children, spend time with my wife, and go into the village to see my friends and play cards, I have a full and busy life.” Martin explained that if Pablo worked longer hours and caught more fish, he could make more money. With the extra money, Pablo could buy more boats and catch money more fish. By selling the fish, Pablo could open his own factory and sell direct to supermarkets.
“Then what?” asked Pablo. “Well you would probably have to move to Mexico City to run the business. Finally, you would be able to sell your business and make millions of dollars,” replied Martin. “How long will that take?” asked Pablo.
Martin thought for a while and said it would probably take at least 15 years.
“And then what” asked Pablo.
“Well, that's the best part,” Martin said. “You will be able to retire, Buy a house near the ocean, sleep longer, play with your children, spend more time with your wife, see your friends, and play cards.”

Liang Xianghua, a 22-year-old girl from Guangxi University, has been well-known in China for her sand painting since her first work was used by CCTV.
"Sand paintings really attracted me while I was watching a video performance, I was surprised by how this artwork melted people's heart in minutes" said Liang. "I fell in love with the way the sand pictures, music and the light combined（融合）with each other to make a flow of emotion（情感）. You can express things freely."

    In order to master the skills, Liang practised for several hours every day. She said that she couldn't even do the first step well of throwing sand onto the glass. But she didn't give up.
    After finding success with her first show, she was invited to do many performances. This made her quite tired. She decided to give a stop and focus on her study. But an invitation from Malaysia changed her mind just as she was about to wash the sand from her hands. This spring, she was invited by a Malaysia middle school to give a performance. Liang didn't want to do a live show, but agreed to do a video for the school, showing its development over the years.
    She received praise for her work and the performance was described as an eye-opener for the students. This made her wonder if her art would be more meaningful if she made it for the poor students.
   As a volunteer this time, she plans to take part in a summer programme offering help to pupils in a mountain area, and give the most wonderful show in her life.

Jim loved traveling in his free time. Once he walked to a sacred shrine(圣地) in the Himalayas. The journey was long and the mountain road was hard to walk on. Though he carried little baggage(行李),the road was very difficult for him. He kept sweating(流汗). Just ahead of him, he saw a little girl, less than 10 years old, carrying a boy on her back. She was also moving on slowly. She panted(喘气) heavily, but her hands still firmly held the boy on her back .

When passing by the little girl ,Jim said to her, "My girl, you must be very tired because what you carry is so heavy！"Hearing this, the little girl said, "What you carry is a weight, but what I carry is not a weight; He is my little brother. I must take him to the hospital."

It is true that both a brother and a burden(负担) have a weight. But what the little girl said is also true: What she carried was her little brother, not a weight. She loved her little brother from the bottom of her heart.
