A volunteer experience

It was March 2018. I was finishing high school. While I was looking forward to my college years, I also felt a strong desire to volunteer abroad. After weeks of serious consideration, I decided to have a gap year(间隔年).

I cannot tell you how many hours I spent trying to find the programme I was most interested in. I contacted many volunteer organizations. In the end, I signed up with " African Impact". I wanted to make an impact（影响）-no matter how small-on Africa and its people.

I took part in the Child Care Project. We worked in an orphanage (孤儿院) in Cape Town( 开普敦） and spent time with a group of orphans（孤儿） between the ages of 0 and 3. There was nothing as exciting as seeing a baby taking her first steps, hearing a two-year-old girl repeat all of the letters in the alphabet after I said them, seeing a little boy kick or catch balls of different sizes, and watching all of the kids carefully wash their hands as it became a habit. These were the skills that I watched the children develop during my time there. My heart was filled with pride.

I also took part in the Teaching Project and worked in a preschool. Teaching was more tiring. Some children were naughty. They didn't always listen to me. But it's hard to describe the joy I felt when the kids finally understood what I was trying to teach them.

Volunteering in Cape Town changed my life. It has changed who I am as a person. I cannot be more grateful for this amazing experience.

Here's a picture of my family. Today {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (be) the Dragon Boat Festival, we are all at home. My mom and grandmother {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (make) zongzi but my dad and grandfather are watching the boat races on TV. Do you know what I'm doing? I'm talking {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the phone to my cousin in Thailand. But there isn't a Dragon Boat Festival in Thailand, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} it's like any other day for my cousin. He misses his family and wishes {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (have) his mom's delicious zongzi. Now my cousin is studying in Thailand. He tells {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (I) that the elephant is one of Thailand's symbols. Elephants are smart animals. They {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (play) soccer or music. They can also draw very {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (good). People say that " {#blank#}9{#/blank#} elephant never forgets". They can also remember places with food and water. This helps them to live. But elephants are in great {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (dangerous) because people cut down many trees and kill them for their ivory. We must take action to save them. We share(分享) a blue sky together.

Every time I see people riding bicycles on the street, I always think of the time I spent on my grandpa's old bike.

When I was little, my grandpa looked after me because my parents were both busy with {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (they) work. At that time, only a few people {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (have) bikes in our small town. Most people usually walked around {#blank#}3{#/blank#} foot. I still remember how happy I were to buy the {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (one) bike with my grandfather. And from then on, I went to school on Grandpa's bike! {#blank#}5{#/blank#} the bike was moving forward, it made some funny sounds that made me laugh. I always hugged my grandpa and sang songs {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(happy). Grandpa turned back again and again {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (make) sure my little feet would not get caught into the wheel. Grandpa was so careful {#blank#}8{#/blank#} I never got-hurt.

What {#blank#}9{#/blank#} sweet moment it was! Now I am working in a big city and I miss my grandpa a lot. I wish I could return to those old {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (day).

Thomas Edison was born in 1847. He was in school for only three months, but he asked a lot of questions. He liked to know how things worked. At the age of ten, he built a small chemistry lab (化学实验室) . He plantedvegetables in his garden and sold them to buy chemicals. 

One day, his mother was ill(生病的). The doctor said she needed an operation. But it was night and the oil lamp (油灯) in the room gave poor light. Edison thought hard and had an idea. He put all the oil lamps in his home on a long table. Then he put a big mirror (镜子) behind them. The room became quite bright, so the doctor could operate. 

At the age of twelve, Edison began selling candy, sandwiches and newspapers on a train. When he was free, he printed(打印) newspapers on the train and sold them to the railway workers. 

One day in August, 1862, Edison saw a boy playing on the tracks at a station. A train was coming near quickly, and the boy was too frightened (害怕的) to move. Edison took the boy to a safe place quickly. The boy's father was the station master. He was so thankful that he taught Edison railway telegraphy (电报学). Edison soon became very good at it and later he left home to work in different cities. This gave him a new start in his life. He was then just a boy of sixteen. 

I finally got a chance to visit the beautiful Taj Mahal(泰姬陵) in India. Since I was a child, the Ta j Mahal {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (be) the place I've always wanted to visit. I was {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (excite) when my family decided to visit India with me. Before our trip, I searched for information {#blank#}3{#/blank#}it, but when I saw it in person, it was much {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (beautiful). I believe no visit to India is complete without a trip to it.

The Taj Mahal is an ivory— white tomb(象牙白的陵墓) on the Yamun a River in the Indian city of Agra. The emperor Sha h Jahan finished {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (build) it in 1653 and placed the tomb of his favorite wife. It. us also the tomb of Shah Jahan {#blank#}6{#/blank#} . he). Words can never be enough{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (describe) the beauty of this building of love.

As one of the most famous man- made {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(wonder) in the world, the Taj Mahal is considered as the symbol of India by local people. To hear about the Taj Mahal's history is one thing, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} to see and feel it by yourself is a different experience.

This is really {#blank#}10{#/blank#} unforgettable trip for me!

One morning, Jackie is riding his bike home. He sees his friend, Ms Weasel. She is sad. Her bike has a flat tire (爆胎) but she must go to work now. 

Jackie says, "Ms Weasel, you can use my bike first. Tammy will help fix your bike. "

"Thank you so much!" Ms Weasel says. 

"Sharing is caring!" Jackie smiles. Then he walks home:

When Jackie gets home, he finds a big hole (洞) in his trousers. Oh no! He only has one pair of blue trousers!

"Don't worry!" Tammy comes, "I have many trousers. You can wear mine. " That makes Jackie happy. 

"Sharing is caring. " Tammy says happily. 

Jackie then goes into the kitchen to make beef soup for dinner. Tammy comes with some vegetables. "Wow! What delicious beef soup!" she says. 

"Let's have it together" Jackie says. "Sharing is caring!"

Then someone is at the door. It is Ms Weasel"Thank you for your bike today, Jackie. I have a gift for you!"

"Wow! Honey cake! Our favorite!" Tammy says. 

"We just made beef soup. Let's have dinner together. " Jackie says. 

"Thank you!" Ms Weasel sits down, "Sharing is caring!"
