江苏省南京市建邺区2020年九年级中考英语一模试卷

阅读理解

I lived, up to the time of the illness that took away my sight and hearing, in a tiny house made up of a large square room and a small one. My father built such a house when he married my mother. It was completely covered with climbing roses, vines and honeysuckles. It was the favourite place of humming-birds and bees. It was called "Ivy Green" because the house and the trees and fences were covered with beautiful English ivy. Its old-fashioned garden was the paradise (乐园) of my childhood.

These happy days did not last long. One brief spring with wonderful songs, one summer rich in fruit and roses, one autumn of gold and red flowers, all left their gifts at the feet of a cheerful child. Then, in the cold month of an early spring, came the illness which closed my eyes and ears. It hurt my stomach and brain terribly, and the doctor thought I could not live on. Early one morning, however, the fever left me as suddenly as it had come. There was great joy in the family that morning, but no one, not even the doctor, knew that I should never see or hear again.

I cannot remember what happened during the first months after my illness. I only know that I sat on my mother's legs or touched her dress as she went about her housework. Soon I felt the need of some communication with others and began to make simple signs. A shake of the head meant "No" and a nod, "Yes", a pull meant "Come" and a push, "Go". Indeed, I was thankful to her loving wisdom all that was bright and good in my long night. Slowly, I got used to the silence and darkness around me and forgot that it had ever been different, until she came —my teacher — who was to set my spirit free.

But during the first nineteen months of my life, I had caught glimpses (一瞥) of broad, green fields, a bright sky, trees and flowers which the darkness that followed could not totally be swept out.

举一反三
"Tammy! Come here, please! Mother needs your help in the kitchen." Her father called out to her.
Tammy was in her room, getting ready to do her homework. "Yes, Daddy!" she replied. "I'll be right there."
She hurried out of her bedroom and down the hallway. She was only nine years old. Her elder sister, Ella, had just moved away to go to a performing arts high school in another city. Her brother, Harry, was in middle school and always got home late. With Ella leaving home, Tammy was expected to do a lot more than she had ever done before, especially now, because her mother was ill.
Her father was in the kitchen. "Tammy, I know you usually do your homework right now, but with things being different, we all have to change a little bit. I'll help you and Harry with your homework later on, OK?"
Her father had an apron(围裙) on over his clothes, and he looked kind of funny. He was doing the dishes and he always splashed(溅出) water all over when he did that. After helping her father with the dishes, Tammy helped set the table.
After supper, her father helped her and Harry with their homework, and then they played a board game so that their mother could lie down for a while.
The next morning, Tammy got up early on her own because she wanted to help her mother with breakfast. She made orange juice and even put bread in the toaster and got out the butter so that her mother could sleep for a few more minutes.
When her mother got up half an hour later, she was very surprised and moved to see the breakfast on the dining table. She gave Tammy a big hug.
"Thank you, Tammy. You really are mother's little helper now, aren't you?"

How did Churchill achieve so much? One key to his success was his strictly observed daily schedule.

Churchill is not a particularly early riser, he is a night owl. Around 8 o'clock, he takes off his sleeping mask to the smell of breakfast. On his bed places a tray(托盘)to his own design, with a cutout for his round belly that allows him to have breakfast and work at the same time.

Churchill usually begins the mornings with a full English breakfast, often accompanied by meat from the previous night, and sometimes a glass of wine. As he picks through his tray of food, he    peruses the morning newspapers. Sometimes he rises, walking to his beloved Clementine in her separate bedroom, to discuss a startling development. From his battle station he dictates(口述)letters, sips from a glass filled with water and some whisky, and reads until late morning. Then he bathes, dresses and begins his day. Lunch is followed by a walk round the gardens and ponds, cards with family and friends then followed by a nap. His nap is exactly an hour long. It allows him, he says, to get more hours out of every twenty-four.

Churchill's daily schedule reveals important principles for success: he knows how to get things done. He is one of the most productive men who ever lived. To achieve productively, he always follows two principles. The first he learnt from Napoleon: strength of force in the most important places. The second is economy of effort(节约能量).

Economy of effort is one of Churchill's excellent characteristics(特征). His daily work in bed saves energy for later, when he will often dictate from a stand-up desk. When travelling he is even more economical. Never stand when you can sit down, he will advise a visitor. "Never sit down when you can lie down, and never to miss an opportunity to visit a washroom, as there is no knowing when the next chance will appear."

In the open field, a crowd was in front of the board, from which a piece of bad news comes-- France lost the battle to Germany.

That morning, I started for school very late with fear of being punished(惩罚). I hurried as fast as I could to school.

When school began, there was usually a- great noise. But now it was all so silent! I went in and sat down. I found our teacher had put on his beautiful coat that he never wore except on prize days. On the back benches that were always empty, the village people were sitting quietly like us.

While I was wondering, M. Hamel said," My students, the order has come from Germany to teach only German in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. So this is your last French lesson."

How sorry I was for hardly knowing how to write French! Now I understood why the old men of the village were sitting here. They were sorry, too, that they had not gone to school more. It was their way of thanking our teacher for his 40 years of service and of showing their love for the country that was theirs no more.

Then, M. Hamel talked of the French language, saying it was the most beautiful language in the world. He opened the book and read us our lesson. I was amazed to. see how well I understood it. All he said seemed so easy! After it, we were asked to write. Whenever I looked up from my writing, I saw M. Hamel staring first at one thing, then at another, as if he wanted to fi x everything in his mind. On the roof the pigeons(鸽子) cooed very low, and I thought to myself," Will German soldiers even make pigeons sing in German?"

All at once the church- clock struck twelve. It was the time to dismiss(解散) the class.

M. Hamel stood up, very pale. I never saw him look so tall.

" My friends" said he,"I …I…" But something choked(哽咽) him.

Then he returned to the blackboard, took a piece of chalk, with all his strength, he wrote as large as he could:

" Vive La France!(法国万岁)"

—— Adapted from The Last Lesson
