    On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.

    Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that's a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn't a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.

    Mac's heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase（追赶）。

    Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to show down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he'd be easy caught up and the wolf's teeth would be tearing into his flesh.

    At this moment, Paul and Beeky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn't think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

"Were you Mark's math teacher?" an old man came to my office and asked. I nodded. "Mark talked about you a lot. I want to show you something," he said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. "They found this on him when he was killed in the battle. We thought you might recognize it. "

Opening the wallet, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. I knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which I had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him. And that happened 20 years ago.

Mark was in the third grade class I taught. All 34 of my students were dear to me, but Mark was one in a million. Very neat in appearance, he had that happy­to­be­alive attitude that made even his occasional misbehavior delightful.

Mark also talked without stopping. I tried to remind him again and again that talking without permission was unacceptable. What impressed me so much, though, was the sincere response every time I had to correct him for misbehaving. "Thank you for correcting me, Sister!" I didn't know what to make of it at first but before long I became accustomed to hearing it many times a day.

One morning my patience was growing thin when Mark talked once too often. I made a new teacher's mistake. I looked at Mark and said, "If you say one more word, I am going to tape your mouth shut！"

It wasn't ten seconds later when Chuck shouted, "Mark is talking again." I hadn't asked any of the students to help me watch Mark, but since I had stated the punishment in front of the class, I had to act on it.

One day I decided to do something different when Mark talked again in class.

The school I went to had a tradition carried out every year during the eighth-grade graduation: a beautiful gold and green jacket （the school colors）was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for eight years.

I was fourteen and in the eighth grade. I had been a straight-A student since the first grade and this last year had looked forward very much to owning that jacket. My family was so poor that, when I was six, I was given to my grandparents to raise. I couldn't participate in sports at school because we couldn't afford the fees; even though I was quite athletic, there would never be a school sports jacket for me. So, this one, the scholarship jacket, was my only chance.

One day in May, close to graduation, outside the history teacher's classroom, I heard a fierce argument between the principal and my history teacher, Mr. Frank, about giving the scholarship jacket to Joann, whose father is on the Board and owns the only store in town. Frank angrily claimed that he would never lie or falsify（伪造） records.

The principal approached me tentatively: "Martha, there's been a change in policy this year. The Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars for the scholarship jacket this year. So if you are unable to pay the fifteen dollars for the jacket it will be given to the next one in line. Staring at him in shock, I didn't need to ask who that was.

"I'll speak to my grandfather and let you know tomorrow, I gathered all the dignity. I cried on the walk home from the bus stop. I wanted that jacket so much. It represented eight years of hard work and expectation.

Whenever Abigail opened the door to her aunt's place for an after-school visit, she was greeted with the sight of her 3-year-old niece, sitting on the floor drawing with crayons. "She's obsessed （着迷的）," said her aunt."Gosh, I'm envious of a 3-year-old then," Abigail thought to herself.

Every day, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, Abigail would go over to look at herself in the mirror, thinking the same thing: I am just so…ordinary. It all started once she entered middle school, where her grades in all subjects were OK but not great, and she couldn't sing or dance that well, or play sports. She wasn't even good at making jokes as she was so shy. As she continued to go down the same mind spiral （漩涡） of "you're not good enough, what kind of job could you get in the future being someone so ordinary?", she checked the clock and rushed out the door to get to school on time.

Along the way, she saw Peter and Sally walking ahead of her. Two of the class's top students, they were just so smart and dedicated. Peter always stayed behind after math class to continue working on the equations （方程式）. He was, like her niece was with drawing, obsessed and talented.

A few mornings later in class, something seemed a bit off with Abigail's teacher, Mr Fry. He was normally quite active, moving quickly from the whiteboard to the podium （讲台） to explain some new knowledge points. But that morning, Abigail noticed that he seemed slower, not very with it. Then, as he asked the students to copy down a math equation, Mr Fry began shaking and then started to fall. Immediately, Abigail rushed from her sea t in the fourth row, managing to catch him just in time. He had fainted. "Someone go get the head teacher now!" yelled Abigail in a loud, clear voice. Fifteen minutes later, Abigail and her classmates watched out the classroom window at Mr Fry being wheeled across the parking lot on a stretcher （担架） to be put into an ambulance.

After two weeks off, Mr Fry was back, entering the classroom again to a round of applause from the students. His presence brought a sense of relief and normalcy to the room, easing their worry about his sudden illness.
