The dictionary seems pretty simple. Words (list) in order, and you simply tum to the right page and find the word you're looking for. But (actual), there's something you might not know about the dictionary.
We think of dictionaries as large heavy (book) that include everything. But there were not any simple, common words in early English dictionaries. In the16th and 17th centuries, thanks the Renaissance's (文艺复兴的)influence, English doubled its vocabulary by (borrow) words from other languages. Throughout the 17th century, many English men published lists of hard words and people turned to the dictionary (lean) these words.
Although Noah Webster wasn't first American to produce a dictionary, his name was closely connected with the American dictionary. To fully research words, Webster learned 26 languages to write his dictionary, is called The American Dictionary of the English Language. (publish) in 1828, it had over 70, 000 words. After Webster died in 1843, George and Charles Merriam (buy) the rights to revise (修订) Webster's dictionary. Their efforts paid off in the fall of 1847 and the book sold well.
