Several years ago, I spent most of my time at a mental hospital (精神病院) in our town. I found much joy there. At first it was a little scary to be there, but I stayed on, because I had a reason for doing this.

I volunteered in a locked-up (封闭的) environment. To my surprise, I found that a friend of my parents' was a patient in this hospital. I knew, when I was a baby, this woman wanted to keep me because she had no children. I looked after this woman and showed my old photos to her. Finally, she was able to remember some old things, and she said to me one day, "Dear, you should not come here." But I wanted to bring something happy into this woman's life. I learned that because she had no family, she couldn't leave here and go home. So I brought her to my home twice and I still remembered the happy smile on her face.

I have never forgotten this volunteering experience. This woman later passed    away. I can't see her anymore, but I'm happy that I have done something to make a difference in another person's life.

Stupid but serious

You see a cat sunbathing on the playground. "Hello, kitty!" You smile and walk away. About100 years ago, a scientist saw the same scene(场景). But he stopped and thought. Later, he won the Nobel Prize(诺贝尔奖).

The scientist was Niels Finsen from Denmark(丹麦). He saw a sick cat sleeping in the sun. When the sun moved, the cat moved, too. Why did the cat love the sun so much? To find out the answer, Niels kept watching the cat for days. Amazingly, the cat got better after lots of sunbathing. The sunlight could cure diseases! Then, Niels invented a light to cure human diseases and won the Nobel Prize in 1903.

In fact, many great scientific findings start from "stupid" questions and small things in life.

Scientists may ask: How many lies does a person tell in a day? How many licks(舔)does it take to eat up a lollipop? Why do roses smell good? What can we learn from animal poop(粪便)? And they take it seriously. They watch, think, and do experiments(实验) until they find an answer.

"It's such a waste of time!" You may say.

But think of the great scientist Newton(牛顿). If he just said "Ouch!" and walked away after he was hit by the apple, what might our world be like?

Once upon a time, there was a king. He always worried about what might happen, the future. One day, the king noticed a cobbler（修鞋匠）. Although he wore ragged（破旧的）clothes, he was very happy. Why could he smile so brightly? The king decided to find out the reason. 

The next day, the king dressed in rags and followed the cobbler home. 

"Please, sir, can you give some food to me?" asked the king. 

"Of course," said the cobbler. 

"Why are you so happy?"

"Today I made enough money by repairing shoes to buy the bread."

"But what will happen if you don't make enough money for food tomorrow?"

"I have confidence. Everything will be fine."

This touched the king. But he wondered what would happen if the cobbler couldn't make enough money. So the next day, the king didn't allow anyone to repair shoes. The cobbler didn't know why, but he wasn't sad. Whenhe saw some villagers trying to carry water home, he helped them and got a little money from them. 

That evening the king went to the coobler's house again. The cobbler was having soup and smiling. 

"How could you pay for the food today?" asked the king. 

"I made money by helping the villagers carry water," said the cobbler. "But what will you do tomorrow?"

"I have confidence. Everything will be fine."

"Your confidence has driven away my fear about the future. Thank you." said the king. 

Peggy used to say very little with others. But that all changed when her family moved to a new house.

When they got there, she found 1 old book outside their house. To 2 surprise, the book shone(发光) in the dark. "How strange! What is the book 3 ?" she asked her parents, but they had no idea.

That night, she started reading the book with her pet dog beside her. But she could hardly understand it. Just then, her dog started speaking, "4 interesting book you've found!" She couldn't believe it, 5 the dog continued telling her all kinds of interesting things. After some time, she asked, "So how can you be talking?" "I don't know." said the dog.

Peggy 6 to find out the truth. So she showed the book to some other animals. All of them started talking with her 7 a friendly way, telling her some pretty interesting stories.

During the next several days, Peggy was having fun with her new friends. However, one day, the book disappeared and so did the "voices of the animals". She 8 looked everywhere, but she couldn't find 9 the book was.

When she returned to school again, Peggy was surprised 10 most of her schoolmates special. Little by little, she started talking more to them. And now she has got more friends than anyone else in school.

 It was a sunny. sky after the typhoon(台风) passed and some people found a very large hole next to their village.

 All of the villagers came out to see the hole. They looked inside, but it was dark and nobody could see anything. What happened? Was it a fox hole?

A young man was so surprised that he shouted at the hole, "Hey, come out!" However, only his voice came back from the hole. Then, he picked up a small rock(岩石) and threw(扔) it down the hole. But, still, nothing came out.

 To find out the fact of the hole, the villagers asked a scholar(学者) for help. After looking over the hole, he found nothing, but he tried to look confident, and said for sure, "It's no problem to fill(填充) it up!"

 Seeing this, a businessman came up and offered to buy the hole with lots of money. Later, he built up a company called"Hole-Filling Company". He told everyone the company could hold any litter but they had to pay for it.

 From then on, more and more people came here to put their litter into the hole:

 Hospitals got here to throw the dead people.

 The government put all the dirty water into the hole.

…

 Slowly, the sea and sky became beautifully blue. Under this clear sky, more and more buildings were built up.

 One day, a worker was working on the top of a tall building. Looking at the blue sky, clear water and green plants, he was happy that the city was getting more and more beautiful.

 Suddenly, he heard a strange shout above his head, "Hey, come out!"

 However, when he looked up, he found nothing. When he sat down for a rest, a rock flew down in front of him from the direction(方向) of the strange shout. He picked it up and wanted to know why it came from the sky.

 Of course, he didn't know anything about the rock. Only the young man in the village could know that: it was the same rock that he threw into the hole.

 Several days later, the sky was not as beautifully blue as before. More and more litter fell down from the sky-dead people, dirty water...

①Emma is a lively girl. She applied to join the school's dance club as soon as she started high school. She had heard lots of descriptions about high school clubs and had always been curious and longing to join one.

②As the school's 100th anniversary (周年纪念日) drew near, Emma's club needed to perform at the celebration. Emma was both excited and nervous when she knew she had been chosen to be one of the performers. Emma wasn't used to performing in public. However, her teammates' encouragement gave her hope and her confidence improved .

 ③The day finally came. Emma imagined her dance moves over and over again in her mind when she and the team were waiting backstage. Then, they stepped onto the stage (舞台) one by one. With butterflies in her stomach, Emma began to dance. She was afraid to make mistakes. Suddenly, she stumbled (绊脚) and fell. At that very moment, she breathed heavily and her heart was racing like a frightened rabbit. The audience (观众) saw that in surprise, but they soon cheered Emma on.

 ④With her teammates' help, Emma picked herself up and continued to dance with calm. Then the team went all out for the show, and the audience were impressed by them.

 ⑤When it was all over, the audience showered the performers with cheers and praise. Emma's team even won an award! Emma was thankful for the love and support from her teammates and the audience. She realized that bravely facing fears and rising to challenges are necessary qualities to have. Surely, she will remember the experience forever.
