    Every night after dinner, my grandparents would turn on TV for the 6 o'clock news. No matter how hard I tried to act the grown-up and watch with them, I would inevitably (不可避免地)  get distracted until 6:30 when Wheel of Fortune came on.

    My grandma would play along, trying to guess the answers before the players. Her shouts of excitement when she succeeded could be heard across the house.

    As I grew older, my love of reading and writing blossomed, and I would join my grandma in yelling out letters. Soon, I was experiencing the thrill of solving the puzzles faster than the contestants (选手) and even my grandma. I was hooked.

    Due to constant moving around with my mom and father, I started to spend less time with my grandparents, but our bond remained strong. My grandparents provided me with the stability, love and support that I desperately needed when I grew up. When I was in a bad mood, I would remember those sweet nights.

    A few years later, I was living with my grandpa in Chicago. While watching an episode (集)  of Wheel of Fortune, we had a wave of nostalgia (怀旧) . With application, I didn't think much of it until I received a mail months later, announcing that the Wheel of Fortune casting team would come to Chicago. In order to be considered for an in-person audition (试演), applicants would need to submit a sixty-second video explaining why they wanted to be a contestant.

    All my childhood memories of watching the show came flooding back, and I knew I was meant to spin (旋转) the wheel for real. Immediately, I recorded a video and submitted it. A couple of weeks later, I received an e-mail inviting me to audition in person. I was very nervous on the audition day. I couldn't believe I was trying out for ''America's Game''! After two rounds of intense auditioning, with half of the hopefuls letting go after the first round, it was over. All of us applicants were told we would receive a letter in the mail within two weeks if we were selected.

    On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.

    Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that's a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn't a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.

    Mac's heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶)。

    Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to show down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he'd be easy caught up and the wolf's teeth would be tearing into his flesh.

    At this moment, Paul and Beeky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn't think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

    One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more way for her to solve my strange problem—inability to read. (阅读障碍)

    In the library, I found my way into the “Children's Room". I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a dog. I had recently had a dog, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but later he was given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forget my dog.

    There on the book's cover was a dog which looked the same with my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Dog with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for summer.

    Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion. When I finished my reading, a stream of tears ran down my checks. It was until then I realized that I have overcome my inability to read. Thus, this was the very first book for me which I had read through and deeply immersed in real sense.

    After study for hours, I went outside and up to the roof nearby for a break and watched people swimming in the sea. It was a sunny day—a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then, as I looked in the distance. I discovered a series of three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I'd seen these mini-tsunamis (小型海啸)many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the swimming area. Most people knew to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.

    Without thinking, I ran down into the street, holding my bodyboard (冲浪板)on the way and shouted at a stranger to call the coastguard(海岸警卫). My neighbor Tom had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.

    Once we got closer, we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency—I'd never been trained as a lifeguard—but I didn't think twice about trying to save them.

    I suppose in a way I wanted to impress everyone; at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.

    Tom and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I held the boy and pulled him over my board. Tom then moved the girl onto his board.

My two-year-old daughter and I often get smiles from strangers as we walk through our town with Clara riding in her backpack, singing and swinging her feet. 

I felt extra grateful for my sunny little girl on one walk at the end of April, 2006. Just three days before she woke up from her nap ( 小睡) with a fever. We spent a tough evening in the emergency room. Any parent or child is frightened by such an experience. So it was a great feeling that Clara was so happy that day. 

We were heading home from a local grocery store, which wisely gives out free balloons to children. Clara always looks forward to getting a balloon there. She did an especially nice job — waiting patiently in the long queue at the store. Luckily, her patience was rewarded with a pink balloon. Pink means a lot to her, especially these days, since the medicine she is taking for the high fever is bubble-gum pink. 

Clara was so happy that she started singing "Mister Golden Sun" to her balloon. But when we walked under a tree, POP! There went the balloon. Clara immediately burst into tears. "My pink balloon popped!" She has had many balloons before, but is always very careful with them. This was the first time that she had had such an upsetting experience. Heart-broken, she stared at her poor short-life luck, out of control.

A college-aged young man, about 21, with light brown hair, who was walking behind us noticed Clara's tears. He was clearly preparing for an important date, as he was carrying a bouquet (束) of a dozen pink roses. He quickened his pace and asked Clara what had happened. Unfortunately, Clara was too shy and upset to answer, but I briefly described the situation, deeply touched that a young guy, probably hurrying home to get ready for a date, would stop to comfort a little child.

Then I heard it. The last group: "Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina." I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group —the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits(不合群的人)!

There must be something wrong! Mrs. Bartlett was such a person of insight, vision and thoughtfulness that she never forgot to bring out the potential of all her students. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. Finally I was determined to convince her I should be in the "good" group.
