Be at your best!

What does your brain need to work well? Here are some things it needs.

    Good food

Experts say that breakfast is much more important than any other meal. So don't miss breakfast — especially before an exam! But you need to eat a good breakfast — junk food won't work.

    A regular supply energy

Your brain needs a regular supply of energy, so you need to eat carbohydrates. They're found in bread, rice, pasta and beans.  They work more quickly than bread and rice, so they give you a short burst (爆发) of energy, but afterwards you feel more tired.

A continuous supply of oxygen (氧气)

Your brain needs oxygen, which it gets from exercise.  You also need a good supply of iron because iron helps your blood to carry oxygen round your body.

    Water

. Not getting enough water will stop your brain from working well. And remember, water isn't as expensive as sweet drinks!

    .

Your brain needs several hours' sleep, so it can ‘update' itself, just like a computer. Experts say that when you study for a test or an exam, you should get some sleep as quickly as possible after you've finished studying. This helps you to remember what you've learnt.

A. A short break.

B. A good night's sleep.

C. It works best in the morning.

D. Exercise improves your memory too.

E. Water is much better than sweet drinks.

F. Your brain works better when you have eaten.

G. Chocolate, biscuits and sweets are not good for your brain.

Trust has been regarded as the basis of any relationship, including friendship. No relationship can last long with a lack of trust. Not many of your friends will have real faith in you as you would like to believe. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Sometimes, it takes years, even a complete lifetime, to trust someone. However, how do we know if our friends have faith in us?

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}With whom will you share things that you don't want everyone to know? It would be with a close friend, whom you trust as much as you trust yourself. While a few of your friend may be fiercely protective of their privacy and may not tell their secrets to anyone, those who do, surely find you trustworthy and reliable.

Whom do you look up to for advice when you need it the most? It has to be either your parents or your friends. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} This is a shining example of trust. You only seek advice from people you hold in high regard and find dependable. The friends who trust you will never forget to include you in the important decisions of their life.

Arguments and heated discussions are a part of every relationship, and this is also true for friendship. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} While some people find it difficult to forgive and forget, your friends will never have problems moving on. It is because they trust you and believe that you will never cause any pain to them on purpose.

There are times in life when you find yourself a lonely soldier. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Your friends will never let you down and will strongly stand for you when you need encouragement. You can determine that they trust you and believe in your beliefs, if they side with you when you need them the most.

A. If your friends share their secrets, there's a good possibility that they have much

faith in you.

B. People can be extraordinarily jealous sometimes.

C. Two people cannot have identical reaction to a situation and different opinions do exist.

D. In fact, winning trust is, by far, the most challenging aspect of relationships.

E. No matter how close you are to your friend, you cannot take that comfort level for granted.

F. However, people who are fortunate to have been blessed with true friends are never alone in any battle.

G. You know they will never pass on a wrong suggestion.

How to Use Social Media Positively

    Nowadays so common is Social media in our society that almost everyone is connected to some form of it, whether it is Twitter, Facebook or even Pinterest. We are in a fast-paced, technologically evolving society and we are addicted to social media. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

So how does one ensure a positive online reputation? It's simple:

Keep it clean. Party photos with alcohol are an absolute no-no. Would you want to have your boss see these photos? {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Make sure to post contents that you feel positively reflect you, your creativity and your skills.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} You have a private Twitter account so you can post anything you want? This is decidedly not the case. Privacy settings make it harder to see your full account, but it's not impossible. Under no circumstance should you rely on privacy settings as a way to protect inappropriate contents.

Ensure you're careful and professional. Keep it classy (优等的)! Discover your brand, or what you want people to think of you. Proper spelling and grammar is always a plus, but it may not be your brand. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} In this way, you can earn approval.

Follow these simple rules and you're on your way to building, or restoring an online reputation. Using social media positively doesn't mean you can't have fun and use it to express yourself; however, you want to ensure that you're OK with anyone seeing everything you post.{#blank#}5{#/blank#} So your post can get your friends active and happy.

Like it or not, your social networks reflect you ── make sure you look like the shining star that you truly are. Try to do everything as well as you can.

A. In fact, we long for social media and need it.

B. Social media is very fast to use but very difficult.

C. Don't trust privacy settings at all.

D. Be entirely sure about what you're posting.

E. Once you click post, there's no looking back.

F. Make sure your post is written personally.

G. Try to do everything as well as you can.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

A. It doesn't make sense

B. Listen to their questions

C. Teach them by examples

D. You only have to share your children's curiosity

E. It began with a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours

F. When adults increase their "wait time" to three seconds or more

G. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior

Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy, as there's no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}.

Give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, children can give more logical, complete and creative answers.

Watch your language. Once you have a child involved in a science discussion, don t jump in with "That's right" or "Very good". {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying "That's interesting or "I have never thought of it that way before", or coming up with more questions or ideas. Never force a child to think. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}, as children are always thinking, without your telling them to.

What's more, giving them freedom to think can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so that he will be a smaller target for your disagreement.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass (放大镜) and they'll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying that water evaporates (蒸发), set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

A. Turn the laptop over

B. Let the laptop face you

C. but there's a good chance of saving your investment if you act quickly

G. You can use a hair dryer on its coolest setting

How to Save Your Laptop after a Spill

Spilling coffee, juice or water on a laptop might seem like the end of the world, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. Here's a five-step plan to rescue a laptop after a liquid spill.

    Switch the laptop off

Shut down the laptop. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. Remove the power cord, unplug any peripherals and remove the battery. The biggest danger at this time is the device shorting out.

Remove excess liquid from the laptop

Remove excess liquid with a soft cloth or paper towels. Do not use a wiping motion as that just spreads the liquid further.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

With the laptop facing away from you, move it from side to side and from front to back in a gentle rocking motion to help the liquid to escape from all four sides.

Use compressed air to dry the laptop

Make sure that you have removed all excess liquid. Then, if you have one, use a can of compressed air to help dry the laptop. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. Keep the dryer moving all the time and hold it at least 20cm above the laptop.

Leave laptop to completely dry out

Leave the laptop opened in an inverted "V" shape in a warm area, to completely dry out. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Wait for 24 hours or longer, making sure the keyboard is completely dry, before reinstalling the battery and peripherals.

If you must replace your laptop keyboard, please remember: most laptop keyboards can be replaced by a technician, or you can purchase a new USB or wireless keyboard to use with the laptop.

Four Tips for High School Graduates

Over threemillion high school students are graduating this spring in the United States. Many of them will head to university in the fall. The transition (过渡) from high school to college is a major one, and successful adjustment to college has lifelong influences.

Maybe you are about to make this transition yourself or have children who are about to leave the nest. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} If you know someone who is making this transition or know parents guiding their soontobe adult kids through this time, please take a moment to share this collection of researchbased tips with them.

Be open to making new friends as soon as you set foot on campus. Even during orientation (迎新会)! {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Your success in college depends, in part, on surrounding yourself with others who can support you and help you have fun.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Successful adjustment is about reaching out for help when you need it. This means trying to find the answers on your own first, but then contacting those who can help you when you can't. That is what they are there for!

Lean on your family. Family support can give you comfort when classes get hard or you are stressed about finals. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Strong support from family is linked to lower loneliness and depression during the first year of college and higher academic adjustment including motivation and concentration.

    Be confident. Feeling anxiety about communicating with fellows, professors, and speaking up in class is associated with lower adaptation during the transition to college. One of the best ways to increase your communication confidence is to practice! {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. This list is for you.

B. The more you speak up in class, the easier it becomes.

C. Don't be afraid to talk to your professors or teaching assistants.

D. Joining clubs is also linked to feelings of belonging at college.

E. Your professors and teaching assistants want to see you succeed in their classes.

F. Almost everyone is in the same boat as you are, hoping to make friends quickly.

G. Family members can give you advice and help you solve problems if you need help.

How to Grow Organic Tomatoes in a Container

Anyone who has seen tomatoes growing in a garden knows that they tend to be huge plants. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} So the first thing to do when considering growing tomatoes in a pot is to find a suitable variety.

After you find the perfect plant, it is time to plant it. In general, plastic or fiberglass pots are best for growing tomatoes. They don't dry out quickly. While tomatoes love heat, they don't like being dry. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Besides, tomatoes need to grow in a reasonably large pot. A pot must be 8 inches deep. That's the absolute minimum. A 12- or 16-inch pot is even better.

Any good quality organic potting soil works for tomatoes. Don't use soil dug directly from the garden. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Compost-based soil, whether purchased or mixed from your special recipe, is nice. When planting the tomato, put some soil in the bottom of the pot and set the plant in. After you have the plant set at the proper level, fill in around it with soil. The soil should go up to about an inch below the rim of the pot to allow room for watering.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} The best way to tell when to water is to stick your finger into the soilif the first two inches are dry, it's time to water.

    The trickiest thing about growing tomatoes in a pot is that they are heavy feeders. Every time you water, you wash nutrients out of the soil. So fertilize (施肥) regularly. Once a month is good. But every other week, applying the fertilizer at half-strength is better. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. It is too heavy for container gardens.

B. That's why clay pots are popular.

C. Instead, use whatever soil you can get.

D. And dry soil can reduce fruit production.

E. This provides constant nutrients for the tomato plants.

F. They require people's much work to stay manageable.

G. Tomatoes don't like being dry, so water them regularly.
