How to Break Bad Habits

You have lots of things you'd like to do. But sometimes it's hard to get to the finishing line — just like your goal. How can you break your bad habits and develop good ones? {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Here are a few opinions we often get from kids, followed by ideas that might help.

I can't get away from screens.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}If you usually spend time lying on the sofa and watching TV programs or a video when you're bored, go somewhere else instead. Take a book to your room or your violin to the backyard. Or ask if you can help cook in the kitchen.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

Start with "showing up". Then take one small step or do one tiny task, followed by another and another. For example, how do I practice the piano? First sit at it. Then play one note at a time. Starting with a very simple step often helps. Why? It's easy, quick, and gets you in action. Then keep taking steps.

I have no time.

Take a look at the choices you make about how you spend time. Do those choices show what's important to you? Can you spare 10 minutes a day to work on a goal? Let's suppose you want to be a singer. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Talk with a parent about why your goal counts. Discuss whether you can let go of (放开) something less important to spare time to achieve it.

A. I can't start such a huge goal.

B. I don't like playing the piano.

C. And how can you try to reach your goals?

D. To change a habit, try changing where you spend your time.

E. Is it more important to practice singing than play video games?

Li Lei is always late for school. Please write down an idea to help him break the bad habit. (回答不多于8个单词)

The Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on May 5 of the lunar calendar (农历). Eating zongzi and racing dragon boat are the most important traditions to memorize Qu Yuan. He jumped into Miluo River and died. Local people decided to throw food into the river to feed the fish so that they wouldn't eat Qu's body.

Tomb-Sweeping Day

Every year in early April, people in China visit that tombs (墓) of their ancestors(祖先). It is Tomb-Sweeping Day. On that day, Chinese families will sweep the tombs and clean away the grass around them. Then they burn paper money and put flowers and fruits in front of the tombs.

The Laba Festival

There is a festival called the Laba Festival before the Spring Festival. It has been a long tradition that people eat Laba porridge to celebrate the event that day. Laba porridge is the most important dish for the Laba Festival. In general, It is made by rice, nuts, grains (谷物) and dried fruits.

Dragon head-raising day(龙抬头)

People believe that getting a haircut during the first lunar month is not a good idea. After a month's wait, people usually cut their hair on Dragon Head-Raising Day—the second day of the second lunar month. It was once a tradition to line up outside the barber shops(理发店) on this day.

 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A 、B 、C 和 D 项中,选出最佳选项。

Do you know your mobile phone number well? You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. That's because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. Why is that?

The 11 digits (数字) include three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three numbers tell you the mobile phone service provider (服务提供商) you are using. For example, 135 is for the China Mobile Communication Corporation (中国移动) and 186 is for China Unicorn (中国联通). The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is from. And the last four digits are random (随机的).

The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population (人口) in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits from 1999.

11 digits can make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers. That's enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China. Also, we can reuse the mobile phone numbers. Usually, the service provider will use a canceled number again after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven't called for a long time, you may find its owner has changed.

Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot make as many numbers as we can. Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits. Canada's mobile phone numbers are perhaps the world's shortest: they use seven digits.
