Ever wonder what would happen if you stopped doing exercise? A new study on identical twins published in Exercise Explores and the results are dramatic(显著的).

In this study, Finnish researchers looked at ten pairs of identical twin men. Each set of twins was in their mid-30s, and each had been brought up in the same household. Since they were twins, they shared the same DNA. The only difference was that though they had the same level of physical activity for most of their lives, one twin had stopped exercising in the past few years due to work or family pressure; on average the active twin exercised at least twice a week, while the less active twin exercised less than twice a week.

The research team put each twin through several medical tests to get a sense of their overall health.

The results showed        . While the more active twins had lower body fat percentage(20.7versus 24) and better endurance(耐力)levels. The less active twins had about seven more pounds of body fat and worse endurance that showed signs of early metabolic disease. Not only were their bodies different, their brains were different as well. The athletic twin had more gray matter(the information processing part of their brain), particularly in areas that control balance and motor function.

The study was small, but the conclusion is clear: Stopping your daily fitness activities can trigger body and brain changes, and even lead to some serious diseases like diabetes, says Jordan Meltzl, M.D., sports medicine physician and author of The Exercise Cure.

A recent study found people's lives are made shorter in North China. It is showed the life expectancy(平均寿命) had been cut down by 5.5 years there.

Researchers think heavy air pollution in China should be to blame(承担责任). It's really the {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(实情). It doesn't seem to work so well though Chinese government has already done something since 2012.

"Air pollution in China is doing harm to people's health. The harm is much more serious than we can {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (想象),"said Chen Yuyu, one of {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (成员) of this study in Beijing University.

Dirty air brings serious problems in North China. In January this year, the air pollution was {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(更糟)than that in other places. People believed rising temperature and waste gas {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(造成) it.

China should strongly fight {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (反对) the pollution. They should think of more {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(恰当的) ways to deal with the problem and encouraged people to take buses, ride bikes or walk, i{#blank#}8{#/blank#}of driving cars. The factories that pollutes seriously should be closed.

If you wake up in the middle of the night, you might want to check the time and see how many hours you have left before 1 up. But this is a bad idea.

Looking at light outside, an electronic watch or a 2 , sends information to the brain to wake up. The biological clock helps 3 the timing (节奏) of bodily processes. Circadian rhythms* are important for managing sleep and how the human body 4 . One of the most important and well-known circadian rhythms is the sleep-wake cycle.

The circadian rhythm and sleep-wake system are sensitive (敏感的) to 5 , and even a quick look at light can make falling back to sleep more difficult. But even more 6 , checking the time can create a feeling of more stress. And that's not helpful for you to sleep again.

Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, a 7 and stress management expert suggests that checking the time every time you wake up will just lead to a more worrying night. Never check the time if you 8 during the night. It is completely normal to wake during the night. But if you're easy to wake at night, then checking the time can make you 9 how much sleep you will or won't have.

When you have too much stress, the body becomes sensitive. This process is not 10 for staying sleepy.

*Circadian rhythms are 24-hour cycles that are part of the body's clock.

Schools change PE classes to help students recover* from COVID-19*.

On March 17, Beijing made changes to the PE test in the 2023 zhongkao: All students will get good scores if they take the exam.

Some cities such as Taiyuan canceled* the 1, 000-meter and 800-meter runs. Other cities like Wenzhou let students choose if they would like to run in the exam. This is to make it safe for students after recovering from COVID-19.

Knowing about your health

At the start of the term, every student in Xi'an Jingkai No. 3 Middle School did a survey*.

The questions were:

●Did you get COVID-19?

●How many days did it take you to recover?

   ▲

"The school wants to make a plan for the PE classes according to students' health. "said their PE teacher Liu Na. "Students feel differently after COVID-19. Some get tired easily, so we keepan eye on each student's feelings. "Liu said.

"Students in Grade Nine are happy because they don't need to take the 1, 000-meter run test for zhongkao. Most students welcome this new change. But some students are really good atrunning, they are not happy because they won't have advantages anymore, "Liu added.

Students now are having easier exercise such as dancing, fun games, sit-ups and walking. So they can improve* their health slowly. What is your PE class like now?

Have you heard the saying "Fall down seven times, stand up eight"? It means that however difficult things get and however many mistakes you make, have the passion and energy to keep going. This is called perseverance and it can help you achieve lots of things.

Perseverance means keeping doing something over a long time, even when the going gets difficult. It's believed that you can achieve a goal if you prepare to work for it. Practicing a trick (技巧) on your bike over and over again or finishing a picture without throwing it away and starting afresh shows perseverance. Florence, 11, says, "It means never giving up, being determined and trying hard to push yourself. I go running with my mom three times a week, even when I don't feel like it, because I want to be the fastest in my class."

Studies show that feeling hopeful and working towards a goal that you really want to reach can reduce stress and make you feel happier. Achieving something you've worked hard for, and overcoming challenges along the way, can also develop your confidence and make you feel braver to try new things. Angela Duckworth is an expert in thoughts and feelings. She studies perseverance, which she calls "grit (勇气)". Duckworth believes that it doesn't matter how talented, clever or rich you are, having grit is what really helps you succeed. She explains, no matter how gifted you are, and no matter how easily you do well in your lessons, you should have perseverance.

Duckworth believes perseverance is something anyone can learn, and the best way to do this is to have a growth mind. This means believing that your brain can grow, and that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. So instead of thinking, "I can't do this", try thinking, "I can't do this... yet". As the book The Big Life Journal says, "People with a growth idea know they can get better by working hard. They keep trying even when things are difficult."

Recently, 76% of people between the ages of 65 and 74, who took part in a survey, said they used social media, compared to 40% five years earlier. An increase in social media use was also seen among people aged 75 and over. A growing number of elderly people are active on social networks and are using the Internet to make calls.

But how will you feel when you find out your grandparents are using social media? Many young people may think"Oh no! They' re going to see everything I post and start writing comments(评论)" and many others say"I'm going to have to spend hours teaching them how to use social media. It's troublesome". Once they have learned how to use social media, they may get a lot of fun. Take Amy for example. She is an 80-year-old granny who has over three million followers on a social media platform because of her sincere sharing on fashionable dressing and positive life attitude.

Honestly, you should be happy if your grandparents are eager to join the digital worlds. Social media use can have a number of health benefits for the elderly. Nowadays families are more geographically distant than ever before, and social media is a great way to connect with faraway relatives and friends. While nothing replaces face-to-face communication, social media is a great way to keep in touch with family members. Another benefit is that elderly people can make new friends who share similar interests, or find long-lost friends from childhood. Finally, social media use can be very educational. For example, looking through Wechat news is a great way to stay informed and keep up to date with local and global events.

Have your grandparents had a social media account yet? Have they asked you to help them create one, but you didn't care? Perhaps you should make the effort because it may affect their quality of life.
