Free time is a good chance for teenagers to have fun. What about free time with parents around? Some teenagers want free play without parents' supervision (监管) while parents and experts may think differently. 

Lin Tao, a middle school student, thinks teenagers should be free to play. "Last time I played with my parents around, I was nervous (紧张) and just couldn't enjoy myself to the fullest." Lin says. "And my friend Chen Xiaoxin has similar experiences. Once, he went out to play with his classmates. Everyone felt uncomfortable with his mother's supervision."

Wang Min, a mother of a 14-year-old boy, thinks playtime needs supervision. She explains, "People usually say I like to control my kid, but that's not true. I am just worried that he will get into trouble. Some guys may have a bad influence on him and some games like LARP may mislead him. He might even get indulged in the stories and can't get back to real life."

Mr. Ma, a doctor of social studies, says it's understandable for teenagers to wish for freedom. Free play helps them to be independent. Parents can give them more space. They don't have to supervise them all the time. However, teenagers should find out the exact details (细节) about the activities before playtime. Then they can communicate with their parents and decide together whether they can go out to play alone. 

Han Qian, 35, is now responsible for recruitment（招募）at the Volunteer Department of the Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee. Thirteen years ago, he was a volunteer at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. 

"I'm honored to take part in two Olympics," said Han. "Being a volunteer is different from organizing them, though both are great experiences. Passion is necessary for being a volunteer, which requires volunteers to be in high spirits and warm-hearted. But being an organizer, they may face many new challenges because more thinking and planning are needed in organizing volunteers."

Because of COVID-19, volunteers need to be quarantined（隔离）after the test events as well as after the Winter Olympics and Paralympics（残奥会）. This means they have to give up more time for this job. As around 90 percent of the volunteers are university students, according to Han, this could affect their schoolwork. So Han's team has helped schools to support the students as much as they can. 

Han's team worked with schools to recruit students. "For example, volunteers from Tsinghua University are responsible for the National Stadium, while those from Peking University take care of the National Aquatics Center, Han said. The cold weather is another challenge, as some games will be held outdoors. The outdoor volunteers need to have physical training, like 15-kilometer walks, to prepare for their work. The organizing committee also provides hats, warmer pads and more frequent shifts for them. 

"Many volunteers have developed interest in winter sports because of this experience," Han said. "I've seen them post pictures of themselves skiing and skating. I'm happy that the volunteering experience is meaningful for them."

It was half past seven on Monday morning: time to get ready for school. Jay Stone rolled out of bed. He did a couple of quick wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror (镜子) and looked at himself.

"Not bad, Stone, not bad," he said to himself and smiled. Maybe he wasn't ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes and his thick brown hair, he had the looks that turned girls' heads. He moved closer to the mirror and smiled, checking his teeth.

"Perfect," he thought. "Good enough for a toothpaste ad."

As his eyes moved down to his strong arms, he smiled again. The hours he spent in the gym and doing sit-ups have paid off.

But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved from the upper part of his body down to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. He had the upper body of a six-footer, but because of his legs he was much less than six feet! Six inches less! Sitting, he was as tall as almost anyone. Standing, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls.

Why didn't his legs grow with the rest of his body? He was one of the shortest boys in his class. He was the shortest in his own family, he was even shorter than his "little" sister—by three inches! Where did his legs come from?

He certainly didn't get them from his parents. They were both quite tall. Looking through old family photos, he found the answer. It was his grandfather on his mother's side. His short legs were a gift from Grandpa Tuttle.

Of course, the kids at school all noticed Jay's short legs and they had a nickname (外号) for him: Stubs! Almost no one called him by his real name; they all called him Stubs. Stubs Stone, Jay didn't like his nickname, but he had to accept it. He had no choice.

But Jay couldn't see in the mirror what his legs could do. They were quick and strong. He was the youngest player on the Brewer High football team. He could run faster than anyone else in the team and, like a rabbit, he kept going and going. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed.

Jay shook his head. "Stubs, Stubs Stone, the kid with stubby legs. Yeah, that's me," he said to himself with a little smile. Suddenly, he heard his mother's voice.

"Jay! It's breakfast time!"

In China, it's common to see people on the streets using their fans(扇子) to beat the heat in summer. However, the traditional Chinese fan is not just a tool for cooling down, but a symbol of traditional Chinese culture.

The history of Chinese fans goes back to the Shang Dynasty (朝代) ( about 1600 B. C~1046 B. C). One of the earliest fans was known as Shanhan. It was a bit like today's umbrella. It tried to keep people away from the strong sunshine and rainfall. Later, Shanhan developed into a long- handled fan called Zhangshan(障扇).

In fact, the fan was not used to help people cool down until the Zhou Dynasty. At that time, fans were usually made of birds' feathers and mainly used by the emperors. Later, bamboo fans and cattail- leaf fans(蒲扇) were invented during the Han Dynasty. Both were most popular among the common people during the Song Dynasty.

Years later, the folding fan was introduced. It soon became popular. However, the best thing of a folding fan was the pictures on it. If a famous person painted the fan, it could cost a lot of money. For example, a folding fan painted by Zhang Daqian was sold for$252,000. Qi Baishi and Xu Beiho ng were also well known.
