    It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn't going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived near by because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us Surprise Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for Candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lanterns gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters(怪物)stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cod.

    There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts, goblins(小妖精),or Jack-o-Lanterns. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.

    “Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.

    “Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her," I said and knocked on the door.

    Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. "Is today Halloween?" she asked. "I completely forgot. I am so sorry!"

    The next morning, a hot and sweet discussion about Miss Parson and Halloween spread among us kids.

I had never been more anxious in my life. I had just spent the last three endless hours trying to get to the airport so that I could travel home. Now, as I watched the bus driver set my luggage on the airport sidewalk, I realized that my anxiety had only just begun.

This was my first visit alone to the international terminal of the airport, and nothing was familiar. I could not make sense of any of the signs. Where was the check­in counter? Where should I take my luggage? I had no idea where to go, feeling as if I were deaf and blind and stupid. I began to panic. What time was it? Where was my plane? I had to find help because I could not be late!

I tried to ask a passing businessman for help, but my words all came out wrong. He just frowned and walked away. What had happened? I had been in this country for a whole semester, and I could not even remember how to ask for directions. This was awful! Another bus arrived at the terminal, and the passengers came out carrying all sorts of luggage. Here was my chance! I could follow them to the right place, and I would not have to say a word.

I dragged my enormous suitcase behind me and followed the group. We finally reached the elevators. Oh, no! They all fit in it, but there was not enough room for me. I watched in despair as the elevator doors closed. I was abandoned again! I had no idea what to do next. I got on the elevator when it returned and stared at all the buttons. Which one could it be? I pressed button 3, because I thought I saw those passengers pressed 3, though it was no more than a quick glance. The elevator slowly climbed up to the third floor and came to a stop. A high, unpleasant noise announced the opening of the doors, and I looked around shyly.

When I turned to thank him for all his help, he was gone.

When I was nine, I needed to earn some money, so I asked Mr. Miceli, the newspaper publisher in my Chicago neighborhood, about an after-school paper route. He agreed only if I had a bicycle. My dad bought me a used bike, but right after that he fell ill and couldn't teach me to ride. Mr. Miceli, however, merely asked to see the bike. So I walked to his garage, showed it to him and got the job.

At first, I filled my delivery bag with rolled papers over the handlebars and walked my bike down the sidewalks. But pushing a bike with a load of papers was awkward; after a few days I borrowed Mom's two-wheeled shopping cart.

It took me longer to make my deliveries by cart, but I didn't mind. I sent each paper to its proper destination. In rain or snow, I put Dad's old raincoat over the cart to keep the papers dry. I got to meet everyone in the neighborhood—working-class people of Italian, German or Polish origins who were always kind to me.

When Dad returned from the hospital, he was too weak to restart his original job. Now we needed every penny we could raise to pay bills, so we sold the bike. Mr. Miceli must have known I wasn't using a bike, but he said nothing about it to me.

On the Thursday evening before Christmas, I rang my first customer's doorbell. Even though the lights were on, nobody answered, so I went on to the next house. No answer, nor did anyone respond at the next family on my route, or the one after.

I was very worried; I hadn't got the money for newspaper delivery this week. And while it was almost Christmas, I never thought that everyone would be out shopping. So I was very happy when, going up the walkway to Mr. Gordon's house, I heard music and voices. I rang the bell.

Jim collapsed in a state of despondency upon the sofa. The impending celebration of the maternal anniversary, known as Mother's Day, was fast approaching, and he found himself devoid of any gift to bestow upon her. "What avenue is available to me for the procurement of a present when my financial resources are non-existent?" he pondered with a sense of urgency.

In a bid to alleviate his melancholy, Jim retrieved the daily journal of current events that was casually dispersed across the sofa. His attention was arrested by a prominent proclamation on the initial page. A nearby establishment for retail purposes was the progenitor of a competition. "Articulate the unique qualities that render your mother distinguished and stand a chance to acquire an uninhibited foray into our marketplace for her," the proclamation declared.

"This presents a serendipitous opportunity!" Jim exclaimed inwardly. With alacrity, he proceeded to his chamber, clasping the journal in his grasp. From his study desk, he selected a writing utensil and an unmarked sheet of paper, and commenced to inscribe his thoughts.

"Her maternal excellence surpasses that of all other mothers in the terrestrial sphere. She is perpetually in the act of preparing a repast for my scholastic sojourn, and never does she overlook the provision of a sweetmeat. She indulges my desire for tales by reading to me in the twilight hours, and with unwavering diligence, she ensures the sub-lethal inspection of my slumbering quarters for any lurking nocturnal visitants. Furthermore, she bestows the most affectionate embrace, yet with a considerate discretion when in the company of my comrades, who might ridicule such a display of familial affection."

Jim was well-pleased with his composition. He transcribed it with meticulous care and sought an envelope and the necessary postal insignia from his paternal figure. With haste, he made his way to the receptacle for outgoing correspondence, his entry in hand, "Mother will revel in the unrestrained exploration of the marketplace," he mused.

Jim dutifully monitored the mailbox for the arrival of his accolade. Time elapsed—a succession of days, then weeks. The eve of Mother's Day arrived, and still, there was no communication regarding the outcome of the contest.

"What am I to do at this juncture?" he questioned himself. A gift remained elusive, as did the prospect of a shopping extravaganza, and his financial status remained unchanged. He was compelled to devise an alternative. With his eyes tightly shut, his toes curled in concentration, and his mind racing, Jim exerted such intense effort in his contemplation that it induced a sensation of discomfort in his auditory organs.
