阅读理解

Mark Twain once said that everyone talked about the weather, but no one ever did anything about it. This was true in his day. But it may not be the case in today's world. In fact, humans have found many different ways to control the weather.

Cloud seeding(云催化) is a kind of technology that can control rain. It is done by spreading chemicals like dry ice or silver iodide(碘化银) inside of clouds, either by rocket or airplane. Thus it change the amount of water inside the clouds, which helps to control the amount of rain, the time when it rains and even where it rains.

This technology has helped to solve drought. It has also played a key role during important events. For example, China used cloud seeding in Beijing just before the 2008 Olympic Games in order to stop rain from falling during the event.

However, scientists are still debating how to use this technology. On the one hand, it is believed that it might have side effects. For example, silver iodide may be bad for the environment. On the other hand, no two clouds are the same, so every new experiment introduces new conditions.

Using lasers(激光) to change the weather has been tested in a lab, and it has been very successful on a small scale. Scientists are still trying to figure out how to use it in the real world, but it could be a new way to stop climatic change.

In addition to controlling rain, scientists have also tried to find ways to weaken storms and hurricanes. Scientists at the US National Hurricane Centre Headquarters think it might be possible to control hurricanes by using lasers. Others believe that burning petroleum in a hurricane's path could slow storms down.

(1)、Cloud seeding works by spreading __________________.
A、storms B、drought C、chemicals D、water
(2)、From Paragraph 2, we learn that cloud seeding _____________________.
A、helps produce rain B、uses rockets or airplanes to work C、releases chemicals into the air D、can control its side effects as well
(3)、The underlined phrase "side effects" means "_________________" in Chinese.
A、好作用 B、副作用 C、坏作用 D、没作用
(4)、Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A、Human today can change the weather. B、New technology can help to solve drought. C、China has once used cloud seeding in Beijing. D、Scientists are able to control hurricanes by using lasers.
(5)、What can we learn from the passage?
A、Mark Twain liked to talk about the weather. B、Cloud seeding may not be environmentally friendly. C、All scientists have welcomed cloud seeding technology. D、Cloud seeding can be used to control storms.
举一反三
Height is just one of the thousands of features your genes decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too, but if you have questions about how tall you're going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don't decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential(潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.
No doubt you're wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There's no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 2 inches (6 centimeters) a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty (when your body starts changing and becoming more grown up).
Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. Two centimeters here and 2 inches there are not nearly as important as the height you're at now, how you've been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through.
Don't be scared if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt(高峰)during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later —-between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.
You'll usually begin to notice that you're growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.

Sometimes it seems that time is flying. Perhaps it doesn't need to feel this way. Our experience of time can be possibly changed. By understanding the psychological (心理学的) processes behind our different experiences of time, we might be able to slow down time a little.

One basic law of psychological time is that time seems to slow down when we're exposed (接触) to new environments and experiences. The law is caused by the relationship between our experience of time and the amount of information our minds process. The more information our minds take in, the slower time seems to pass.

It follows, then, that we have different experiences of time in different situations. In some situations, our life is full of new experiences. Our minds process a lot of information and time seems to slow down. In other situations, we have fewer new experiences and the world around us becomes more and more familiar (熟悉的). We become insensitive to our experience, which means we process less information, and time seems to speed up.

How can we slow down time? Here are two suggestions.

Firstly, since we know that familiarity makes time pass faster, we can expose ourselves to as many new experiences as possible. We can give ourselves new challenges, meet new people, and expose our minds to new information, hobbies and skills. This will increase the amount of information our minds process and expand (增加) our experience of time.

Secondly, and perhaps most effectively, we can give our whole attention to an experience-to what we are seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling or hearing. This means living through our senses rather than through our thoughts. For example, on the way home, focus your attention outside of yourself, instead of thinking about the problems you have to deal with. Look at the sky, or at the buildings you pass, traveling among them. This open attitude to your experiences helps take in more information and also has a time-expanding effect.

To a certain degree, we can understand and control our experience of time passing. It's possible for us to slow down time by expanding our experience of time.

How to Learn Chinese Well

I started to learn Chinese 50 years ago. It only took me nine months to learn this language well.

Here are my tips on how to learn Chinese:

★Listen to Mandarin(普通话)as often as Possible

The first month or maybe two, just focus on listening. Start learning Chinese by paying attention to listening. Just get used to the sounds.

★Spend time in Memorizing Characters(熟记汉字)

Once you decide to study Chinese characters, work at them every day. Spend half an hour to an hour a day just on learning characters. Why every day? Because you will forget the characters almost as quickly as you learn them, so you need to remember them again and again.

★Read as much as Possible

Read a lot. I learned faster than my students 50 years ago, that's because I read everything I could get. I read much more than other students.

★Speak a lot and Don't Second Guess Yourself

When you speak, don't second guess yourself on tones(音调), or grammar of the language. Just let the mistakes pass. Every time you use the language you are practicing and getting used to it.

Chinese is a difficult language to learn, and speaking Mandarin is hard. These four tips are really helpful for me to learn Chinese.
