When I began to study flower arranging （插花）, I was slowly developing a deeper understanding of the 1 between all life. 

In our first class, my teacher said that flowers can 2 talk and that they each have their own 3 of being beautiful. They have "prana" life force, so you have to pay full attention to them, rather than 4 your own ideas of beauty on them. So I began to ask the flowers how they wanted to be 5 and what positioning would make them 6 most beautiful. I waited and listened. 

Even after the flowers had been 7 in the vase, I would discover sometimes that in the morning they had rearranged themselves during the night. Even if they were secured in the 8 , hey always seemed to b silently straining （尽力） t find their 9 place. 

At the same time, they were not 10 independent; they needed loving care. They were dependent on me, or whomever their 11 was for the day, to water them. Watching other people spraying water on the arrangements sometimes, I would feel so 12 by the scene. Small drops of water on the flowers touched the source of life and nourished the heart of beauty. 

This experience made me feel how 13 it could be, if our minds are set in the right way to water not only plants, but 14 , to treat all living creatures in a way that 15 them their right to be beautiful, in their own 16 and time. 

What we came to notice was that flowers could also 17 . Our teacher urged us to always 18 the flowers when we passed how beautiful they were and to thank them for sharing that 19 with us. 

When we made our arrangements with this kind of 20 , we found that the flowers remained beautiful and fresh for many more days than expected. 

"Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you'll look back and realize they were the big things." This 1 has stuck with me since the first time I read it. And it just makes so much 2 .

Just the other day I caught a cold, the flu made me feel so 3 and sleepy. How I wished it was a 4 already. But it was Monday. I had to go to work.

We have a care taker at work. Her name was Lucy, who usually 5 some nice lunch for us. She asked me with 6 if I was ill. After realizing that I was not okay, she was 7 me.

As this serious illness made me 8 , Lucy hurriedly went to the hospital to fetch some medicine to 9 my headache. Her kind gesture and 10 melted my heart. I mean, she didn't have to do that but she went out of her way to 11 it for me. I felt so good, I felt loved, I felt visible and it was a huge 12 .

Life is made up of the 13 things. These little things go 14 most of the time so that we might ignore them. But they're the biggest things and 15 the best things. If you can collect these little things, you'll 16 feel alone. These little things give hope and 17 for doing more and doing better.

Therefore, if something 18 makes your soul smile, note it and let it 19 on your mind and be remembered during dull days that life may 20 .

I've been writing now for 34 years. It all started when I was just 18 years. As a boy growing up, I probably read hundreds of books. I read mysteries, science fiction, thrillers, and just about any other type of book I could find. I had a thirst for knowledge that never seemed to disappear, no matter how many books I read over the years.

Then suddenly, I found that I too had ideas of my own that I wanted to write and share. I wanted to share things that were full of goodness, love, joy, and happiness. I tried to ignore my desire at first, but as any writer will tell you, once ideas awaken inside of you, they don't leave you alone until you write them down. I didn't have a computer, or even a typewriter, but I grabbed a pen and a notebook and wrote down everything that was burning inside of me.

When I was finally done, I didn't know how to share my work with the world. There was no Internet back then, no smartphones, and no social media. However, I sought out the editor of my local newspaper and asked if he would like to print what I'd written. He was a good man, full of both wisdom and kindness. He not only printed my first story but agreed to publish anything else I was willing to write.

After that, of course, nothing could stop me. I continued to write new articles each week, which were published in different local papers and later on the Internet. Years later I even self-published two collections of my stories in book form.

Through my writing, I slowly became a better person. Writing allowed me to discover the goodness and light that exist in us all. I also found that we are all writers whether we put pen to paper or not.

With every choice we make, with every thought we think, and with every action we take, we are writing our own life story.

The famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso once said, "I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it." It strikes a chord(引起共鸣) with me because that's exactly what I have been doing these years.

One of my earliest memories of doing before learning is baking scones(烤饼) when I was about 10 years old. I wanted to bake them to surprise my mother when she returned home.

Before that, I'd observed how my mother baked them many times. As I started to try, I didn't know I shouldn't handle the dough(面团) with my hands too much once I'd added the baking powder(发酵粉). However, I knew exactly how to roll out the dough and use a cookie cutter to cut the scones, because my mom had already taught me.

By the time my mom arrived home, the smell of freshly baked scones welcomed her into the kitchen. They were close to perfection—flat, as a result of overhandling the dough, but they tasted OK. My mom sweetly praised me for my attempt, rather than scolding me for the state of the kitchen, which was like a tornado had just blown!

Have my attempts always been successful? I wish! Some of my kitchen disasters were so terrible that even the dogs wanted nothing to do with them. My gardening failures didn't live to see another season.

But my habit of doing before learning is still helpful. Whatever new software I have to learn how to use, I do so by simply starting to use it. I do, learn, and improve. So if you ask me whether I regret that I tend to do first and learn later, I'd say I don't, because what I have discovered from those is the wisdom to know when it's OK to do and then learn, and when it's probably better to learn and then do!

Climbing, I once thought, was a very manly activity, but as I found my way into this activity, I came to see that something quite different happens on the rock.

Like wild swimming, rock climbing involves you into the landscape. On the rock, I am fully focused. Eyes pay close attention, ears are alert, and hands move across the surface. Unlike walking, where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive observation is essential.

As an arts student studying English literature, I discovered a new type of reading from outdoor climbing. Going out on to the crags (悬崖), I saw how you could learn to read the rocks and develop a vocabulary of physical movements. Good climbers knew how to adjust their bodies on to the stone. Watching them, I wanted to possess that skillful "language".

My progress happened when I worked for the Caingorms National Park Authority.Guiding my explorations into this strange new landscape was Nan Shepherd, a lady too. Unlike the goal-directed mindset of many mountaineers, she is not concerned with peaks or personal achievement. Shepherd sees the mountain as a total environment and she celebrates the Caingorms as a place alive with plants, rocks, animals and elements. Through her generous spirit and my own curiosity, I saw that rock climbing need not be a process of testing oneself against anything. Rather, the intensity of focus could develop a person into another way of being.

Spending so much time in high and st ony places has transformed my view on the world and our place in it. I have come into physical contact with processes that go way beyond the everyday. Working with gravity, geology (地质学), rhythms of weather and deep time, I gain an actual relationship with the earth. This bond lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing. I return to the rocks, because this is where I feel in contact with our land.

When I was a law professor, a student reported that I made an error in grading his exam by giving him too many points. He was 1 , and after thanking him for his honesty, I changed the grade in my2 . His beaming (欢笑的) face turned to shock. "You're3 my grade?" he said angrily. "I would never have come in4 …"

He didn't finish the5 , but it was obvious that his display of honesty was6 . He thought he'd have it all—praise and the higher grade.

Several colleagues thought I should have let the higher grade7 because all I'd accomplished was to discourage him from being8 in the future. And every time I tell this story some people agree with this9 .

But I can't see how I could give good reason for worsening my10 in grading by undermining (损害) the honesty of all my grades by failing to11 an error. The grade itself would be a dishonest12 of his knowledge and it would have been13 to other students. How could I14 give a student a gift of an unearned grade?

I know15 reporting an error in one's favor is unusual, but, like16 too much change, it's clearly the right thing to do. People of character, those with real honesty, hate to give up17 as much as anyone else. The difference is that for them a good conscience and reputation is18 enough to give reason for the cost of doing the right thing.

Perhaps lowering the student's grade did19 him from being honest in the future, but bribing (贿赂) him to be honest so that he does the right thing when it's cost-free would have20 him even more. The duty to be honest is about right and wrong, not risks and rewards.
