I've never posted a story before. However, upon graduating from UC Berkeley, with as much financial support as my family could muster(聚集), I now feel the need to thank my sister Mollie.

Mollie started out at UC Santa Cruz two years ago, when I was already a junior at Berkeley, at a time when my family could no longer afford to support two college students.

We both started working to pay for our housing while our parents were still paying our tuition. Then we took out loans for tuition too.

After one year of college, my sister moved home to San Francisco and took classes at SF City College instead and started working full-time. She did this by choice and let our whole family think that she wanted to move home anyway, and that it was for her as much as for my parents' financial situation.

Over the past year, I continued to receive any support that my parents could give.

At my graduation two weeks ago, I commented on the fact that my sister was working full-time as a waitress and asked if she was going to use the money to travel. She said, "No, I'm saving to go back to UC Santa Cruz."

This probably sounds crazy, but I had completely forgotten that she was saving up for her own college education, and making a sacrifice(牺牲) so that I could finish the last year of mine.

I forgot because she never complained and actually has made a less than perfect situation enjoyable for herself. Mollie has no idea how much I respect her for this quiet generosity, and for her ability to turn a negative experience into a positive one.

    So…I guess I'll tell her!

A、on the Internet B、in a diary C、in a magazine D、in a letter

We all know that water is tasteless. But it happens from time to time: you pick up the bottle of water you didn't finish yesterday, and it tastes strange. Most often, you tend to drop the bottle in the trash bin, believing that the water has gone bad. But is it true?

According to Time, of course not, taste has little to do with quality of water.

According to Time, when water is exposed to the air for 12 hours, carbon dioxide interacts with the H2O in the water, and the pH value lowers slightly. As a result, the water has a different taste.

"But it's most likely safe to drink," Norwegian expert Truls Krogh told Science Nordic. "If the water is covered and of good quality to start with, in principle it can last a thousand years. That's because when water is fresh, it contains little organic matter. As long as water is held in clean glasses or bottles, no pollutants will enter it to harm our health."

People in countries like the US, the UK and Australia usually drink tap water. According to Time, if tap water is drunk within six months, the chlorine (氯气) in the water will be enough to kill any bacteria and keep it safe to drink.

However, there are also some exceptions. If you accidentally put your fingers into water or store water in unclean containers day after day, microorganism (微生物) will enter the water.

With the help of surrounding temperature, and sunlight streaming through windows, these microorganisms multiply quickly. Sooner or later, the water will be in the charge of the unfriendly bacteria. And if you drink the water too often, then you're more likely to be ill.

And what about water in plastic bottles? Heat and plastic are a bad combination, US researcher Kellogg Schwab stresses. When plastic bottles are used at high temperatures, they produce a chemical called BPA. BPA is something that affects hormones (荷尔蒙) and research has tentatively linked it to "several health damage, including heart disease and cancer", Time reported.

Schwab suggests replacing disposable (一次性的) plastic bottles with the refillable containers made of metal or glass to deal with BPA.

Every year in America, high-school students who want to go to college take a national examination called the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT in a shortened way. Their score is an important factor in determining which colleges will admit them or whether any will be admitted at all. The Scholastic Aptitude Test measures one's mathematical ability and use of the English language. Traditionally, the English portion (部分) involved grammatical questions and paragraphs that test reading comprehension.

But the SAT folks have added a single question, to be answered in an essay, hand-written on the spot. That's an interesting way to test writing ability, put content aside, have you ever seen young people's handwriting lately? Or anyone's for that matter, in this age of computer keyboards? Students write numbers and sign their names on bank checks.

They scribble class notes in what can generously be described as the written word. And they hand-write, or more often print, a word or two of identification on luggage and lunch bags. Otherwise penmanship (书法) - once taught so morally and easefully by second-grade teachers, has gone the way of the dodo bird which has died out.

Yet today's kids are asked to write, thoughtfully and legibly (字迹清楚地),for several minutes on this SAT Test. Good luck to the text scorers who must work out difficultly the scrawl of young people who've been typing on computers since the age of three! Teachers insist that good handwriting can not only help one's score on the SAT, but also, later on in life, impress potential employers and earn bigger tax refunds (退税) because the tax inspectors can actually read the computations (计算结果). And don't forget, we all have to turn to handwriting from time to time, as computers go down when power goes out.

Then how to improve the handwriting? Well, with a few simple steps you can improve your handwriting.

PositiQn the pen. You should hold the pen between the forefinger and the thumb, then rest it near the first knuckle(指节)of the middle finger. The rest of your fingers should be curled(卷曲)under your hand and your hand should remain relaxed.

Evaluate your writing. Make changes to your letters till you like how they look. Take your time. Speed is bound to make your writing messy-looking.

Practice. Practice it a lot; it's not enough to do it once and hope for the best. It has to be something you work at to make great improvements.
