新目标(Go for it)版初中英语九年级Unit 4 I used to be afraid of the dark. 第3课时Self Check练习

根据短文内容,回答下列问题,

    I was a schoolgirl in Grade 7 when Danny came to my school and became one of my classmates. He was handsome with blond hair, so many girls in my class liked him very much. Every day, his parents picked him up in an old car. We all realized he was from a poor family. I had a poor family as well, but I just hid it from everyone. I was afraid the kids in my class would leave me if they knew the truth.

    One day, our teacher, Mr. Sims, announced that we would have a field trip. We decided to go to an amusement park. My classmates were excited. I sat back and looked at them, knowing that my parents did not have the money to send me. To my surprise, Danny stood up and said simply, "I won't go with you. My dad hurt his back and lost his job. I am not asking my parents for money."

    "Danny, I'm very proud of you for understanding the situation that your parents are in," Mr. Sims replied. "But the trip is at the end of the month, so we have plenty of time to raise money for it." While walking home from school that day, I noticed three boys talking with Danny. I was a little worried that they were giving him a hard time. But as I got closer, I found they were discussing how to raise money for the trip.

    By standing up and admitting(承认)he was poor, Danny changed my life. I no longer felt I had to lie about my family's situation. As for Danny, I will remember his courage and honesty forever.

(1)、Why did many girls like Danny in the class?
(2)、Where did the students decide to go for the field trip?
(3)、What was the matter with Danny's father?
(4)、Did the three boys fight with Danny after school?
(5)、What did the writer learn from Danny?

Jambo's Story

    In 1986, a video of a frightening event involving a gorilla (大猩猩) and a boy was watched by millions of people around the world. The video is still popular on the Internet today, changed people's opinions of gorillas forever.

    On 31 August, 1986 a couple took their two young sons to Jersey Zoo. When the family arrived, they went to see the gorillas straight away. The father noticed that the children were too small to see the animals, so he picked up his five-year-old son, Levan, and put him on the top of the wall. Then he turned round to pick up his other son.

    When the father turned back, Levan had disappeared. The boy had fallen off the wall, into the gorilla area. The parents looked down and saw that their son was lying on the ground, about four metres below them. He wasn't moving.

    Levan's father tried to climb down into the wall to save the boy, but he was stopped by the other zoo visitors. Slowly, the gorillas came closer to Levan. A large crowd of people had come to see what was happening. Everyone was shouting. They were scared that gorillas might seriously hurt the boy.

    Jambo, a 200kg male gorilla, got to Levan first. He moved carefully around Levan. He softly touched his back. Then he sat down between Levan and the other gorillas. When he saw that a young gorilla had come too close, Jambo stood up and did not let him pass. His message to the other gorillas was clear,”Don't touch him!” He pulled lightly of Levan's clothes and after a while Levan opened his eyes and started to cry.

    Jambo ran away and his gorilla family followed him. Some time later, zookeepers saved Levan. He had broken several bones in the fall, and had seriously hurt his head, but he was alive. A man had filmed everything and millions of people around the world watched the video on the news.

    Jambo! People had always thought that gorillas were dangerous animals, but the video changed their minds. Soon letters, cards and even boxes of bananas arrived for him at the zoo. Jambo died in 1992, but people built a statue (雕像,塑像) at the zoo to remind the world of this wonderful animal.

Being Well-Organized And Getting Things Done

    Being well-organized and getting things done and what we have done is tried to make them as easy to follow as possible to allow you to implement them immediately. There is no doubt that being organized does make a difference.

    ①{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    It is something that you should do every single day and the best way to approach this is to place things in order of importance. Watching that movie may sound like a good idea, but put that at the bottom of the list and focus on things that influence your work, health, or anything else that is key to your survival (生存).

    ②{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Next, you should consider trying to plan ahead, so if you know that there is an appointment at a certain location for a certain time, then plan your day around that appointment.

    ③{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Knowing where everything is really will allow you to get more things done as you will waste less time hunting for that object that you require to complete your task. Too much time is wasted hunting for keys or that piece of paper and it also just stresses you out and can upset your pace.

    ④{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Giving tasks to others will always lead to you getting more done, but it is not just a case of picking anybody to do a task. Instead, you need to make sure that they are capable of doing it without running into any problems and that they do have the correct tools to complete the job.

    ⑤{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    Having a schedule will help to force you into completing tasks on time and actually getting more done in the process. The only problem here is that you need to be sensible when working out how long something takes or you will put undue pressure on yourself and this is where mistakes can occur and you will actually then start to get less done.
