When you are eating dinner with your family, do your parents ever remind you to finish all the food on your plate? If so, you should know it's not just because they want you to be healthy. They also want to stop food waste.

Every year, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted around the world, according to the UN. That's about one-third of all food produced each year.

We make a survey in 34 countries to see how much food is wasted in different countries.

For example, the UAE(阿联酋) wastes the most food, with each person wasting about 1,000 kilos every year on average.

However, some countries have worked hard to use their food resources wisely. France wastes the least amount of food, according to the survey. France was the first country to pass laws that ban(禁止) food waste. It's not allowed to throw away fresh food. Another law forces French restaurants to provide bags for people's leftovers(剩菜剩饭).

China ranked 23rd for food waste in the survey. China's food waste is around 18 million tons every year, enough to feed up to 50 million people for one year. Facing this situation, China has been working hard to reduce food waste. In early 2013, a movement to prevent food waste called "empty plate" began. If music makes you smarter and exercise helps you to think, surely exercising to music can turn you into a clever person.

A team of scientists did research on 33 people who were getting better from heart problems after receiving medical care. They found those people exercised while listening to music. The Four Seasons did much better on language ability(能力)tests than without music. Doctors also use it on people who have had head hurts because it has a beautiful melody.

"Exercise seems to cause changes in the nerve(神经) system and these changes may improve the learning ability of people with heart problems," said Charles Emery. "And listening to music is thought to enhance understanding. We just wanted to put the two results together," he added.

The people said they felt better emotionally and physically after exercising with or without music. But their improvement on the test doubled after listening to music during exercise. Scientists have showed that music can be good for health and education. It helps reduce stress and sadness, encourage relaxation or sleep, wake up the body and improve memory and thoughts.

Scientists have been studying the results of exercise to music on learning and understanding since the early 1950s. A study showed that students who listened to Mozart's violin pieces and exercised went on to get higher marks in an IQ test. With important exams drawing near, your parents will not probably allow you to listen to music or play sports. But perhaps now you have good reasons to argue with them.
