A TV programme has become popular in China recently. It has made people all over China become interested in writing Chinese characters （汉字）.

The increasing use of computers and smartphones has left most young people hardly able to write by hand. Many of them are even unable to remember the 1，000 characters used in daily life without the help of electronic equipment.

CCTV started Dictation Assembly of Chinese Characters to improve the population's handwriting skills. Contestants （参与者） on the show were school pupils， but it was found that 70% of the adults in the audience were unable to remember how to write the word "chanchu".

Because computers allow people to type characters simply by entering pinyin ，  they don't need to remember how to write them. "The keyboard age has had a big influence on the handwriting of Chinese characters，" Guan Zhengwen， who designed and directed the show， said. He added that he hoped to encourage people to keep it alive as an art form.

Hao Mingjian， an editor of a magazine， putting his heart into Chinese characters， said： "Learning Chinese characters goes on throughout your life. If you stop using them for a long time， it is very likely that you will forget them."

Do you love animals? I think you all say "yes". But maybe {#blank#}1{#/blank#} loves them as much as Joel Sartore. Joel is a photographer. He {#blank#}2{#/blank#} travelling the world to take pictures of animals.

Joel is working on a project. He is taking photos in different {#blank#}3{#/blank#} around the world. He hopes his photos can encourage people to {#blank#}4{#/blank#} animals in danger. "My job is to tell their {#blank#}5{#/blank#} stories and I hope the world cares about them in time," he said. Joel calls his project the Photo Ark (影像方舟). He started the project in 2006 in his hometown of Nebraska, the US. And now he's {#blank#}6{#/blank#} working on it. He took his 10,000th {#blank#}7{#/blank#} in 2020. It was a small wildcat in America.

Joel puts each animal on a black or {#blank#}8{#/blank#} background and then takes photos of them. This helps people see their true colors and lets people see a little mouse as {#blank#}9{#/blank#} as a big elephant.

Joel shows his photos around the world and puts {#blank#}10{#/blank#} on the Internet, too. He also asks people to buy his photos, give money to the Photo Ark, and support zoos in their cities.

When Daniel was 26, he spent a year travelling around America. He visited all 50 states and worked for a week in each one. He didn't use buses or planes — he {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (travel) by car from job to job. He earned money for every job he did but hotels were too expensive for him. He {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (usual) stayed in his boss's home. Sometimes he stayed with one of the other {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (worker). "People were very good to me," says Daniel. "I {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (look) after really well."

But {#blank#}5{#/blank#} did Daniel do this? "I wanted to travel and learn about my country," he says. "And I expect {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (try) lots of different jobs." Things weren't always easy {#blank#}7{#/blank#} Daniel. In week 7, he worked as {#blank#}8{#/blank#} farmer in Nebraska. "The days were long and I got really dirty," he says. In week 38, he was a cook in a fish restaurant in Maryland. "{#blank#}9{#/blank#} was really boring to work there! Often I didn't even have time to drink water. Other jobs were much {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (interesting)." He worked in a theme park in Florida and worked as a model in North Carolina. In Alaska, he was a photographer. "That was great. Alaska is a very beautiful place," says Daniel.

Plastic is useful.  It's in a lot of things we use every day, from clothes to pens, and bottles to toys.  But there's a problem.  Most plastic is not biodegradable (可生物降解的), and a lot of it ends up in the sea. 

How big is the problem?

There are billions of bits of plastic in the world's sea! Every ocean and every beach has plastic, from large objects to small pieces called micro plastics.  Tons of plastic go into the sea every year.  Increasing like this, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea!

How does plastic harm sea animals?

Fish, sea turtles, and birds think plastic is food, and they eat it.  The plastic stays in their stomachs.  Dead seabirds are found with stomachs full of plastic.  Whales, dolphins, and seals are caught by plastic bags or fishing nets.  It's said that millions of ocean animals die each year because of plastic rubbish in the sea around the world. 

What can we do?

Many people and organizations around the world are taking action.  In some countries, plastic bags aren't allowed to use.  Scientists are developing new biodegradable plastic.  Many communities are trying to use less plastic and recycle more.  Kids are playing their part, such as working to make their schools "zero plastic". 

Plastic pollution is becoming more and more serious, so it's necessary for us to produce, buy and use fewer plastic products.  Above all, one person can't solve it alone, but together we will make a difference.
