It's never a real problem for us when the weather gets cold. We can put on more clothes, stay next to a fire place or simply travel to a warmer city to spend the winter – people have many different ways of dealing with the cold.

But things are not as easy for plants. Unlike humans, plants can't move to run from the cold or produce heat to keep themselves warm. So how do they manage to live in the freezing winter?

Actually plants have their own ways too.

According to researcher Amy Zanne, the cold is a big challenge for plants. Their living tissues(活组织) can be hurt when they freeze. "It's like a plant's frostbite(冻疮)," Zanne told Science Daily. Also, the cold can cause air bubbles(气泡)to form in the plant's water system. "If enough of these air bubbles come together, they will be harmful to the plant," she explained.

To live through cold weather, plants have developed three ways, according to the study.

Some plants, such as oak trees, avoid frostbite by dropping their leaves before the winter comes, which can shut off the flow of water between roots and leaves, and they grow new leaves and water transport cells when the warm spring returns.

Other plants, pine trees for example, protect themselves by making their water transport cells thinner, which makes it easier for cells to travel among air bubbles.

The third strategy is also the most special – some plants die on the ground in winter and start growing as new plants from seeds(种子)when conditions get warmer.

However, the tudy also found that these smart ways were developed over a very long period of time. This causes scientists to worry that plants may not be able to deal with human – caused climate change(气候变化), which has only started recently.

Scientists are hoping that this study can help people find possible ways to save plants from the danger from climate change.

(1)、According to the passage, why is the cold a challenge for plants?
A、Because they are only grown in warmer places. B、Because they can't live without leaves. C、Because there's no water for plants. D、Because the living tissues can be easily hurt.
(2)、We can infer from the passage that ________.
A、pine trees' calls can become thinner B、some plants can't live in winter if they don't produce seeds C、climate change can change the way plants live D、there are already ways to save plants from climate change
(3)、If we put the passage into three parts, which of the following is the best?

(①=Para.(自然段)1 ②=Para.2 ③=Para.3 ④=Para.4 ⑤=Para.5……)

A、①②/ ③④⑤⑥⑦/ ⑧⑨⑩ B、①②/ ③④⑤⑥⑦⑧/ ⑨⑩ C、①②③/ ④⑤⑥⑦/ ⑧⑨⑩ D、①②③/ ④⑤⑥⑦⑧/ ⑨⑩
(4)、Which is the best title for the passage?
A、Take action to deal with climate change! B、Help save plants! C、Plants are losing the ability to save themselves! D、Humans will live without plants soon!

Do you often visit bakeries (烘焙店) for a sweet treat? And have you ever wondered what happens to the unsold bread? Lately, this topic has brought a wide discussion on the Internet.

Unlike ice cream, bread is kept at room temperature, leading to a short shelf life (保质期).

"Freshly baked bread can only be kept for 24 hours, while packaged (包装好的) bread lasts 3 days." said a bakery manager in Jiangxi Province. At the end of a day, some bakeries sell the near-expired (临期的) bread at a lower price. But others would rather throw it away because they are afraid that many customers will just wait until the end to buy cheaper bread.

If so can bakeries make less bread in the first place to reduce waste? The answer is "No." In fact, a shelf full of bread will increase people's desire to buy more. Also, bakeries need to make many kinds of bread every day to meet different customers' needs.

Throwing away the unsold bread will lead to a huge waste for sure, so some bakeries are looking for better ways to deal with it. For example, some bakeries sell near-expired products through "blind boxes". At a bakery in Shanghai, there is a blind box sale from 8 to 9 p.m. every day. People can get a random (随机的) type of near-expired bread at a low price. "It's great because it reduces food waste," said one customer. "And the blind box always gives me a little surprise!" What's more, some bakeries give away the near-expired products to people in need. Even the expired bread can be sent to recycling companies and turned into food for animals.

Shenzhen rescued and captured nearly 10,000 dogs last year. 1,119 of them have been adopted (收养) by people after receiving treatment at the city's dog rescue centres, according to a report.

Shenzhen has a total of four dog rescue centres, one of which is the Longgang Dog Rescue Centre in Honghualing Ecological Park. As the newest one, the centre was put into use in July 2020. It covers nearly 800 square metres and can accommodate (容纳) more than 4,000 dogs a year.

According to the director of the centre, Liu Xiongguang, the centre is divided into eight areas — the office, reception, isolation (隔离), living, adoption, storehouse, activity and science popularization areas.

The centre aims to accommodate, treat, help with the adoption of, and inform the public about the homeless or captured dogs in Longgang. If the dog owners are found within seven days, the centre will tell him or her to get back the pet, or the centre will adopt it.

The first place the dogs set foot in is the reception area, where workers at the centre will take photos of them and record them on the list. The dogs with diseases will be isolated and other dogs will remain in the room to wait for the next step. After careful watching, the dogs are moved to the living area. Every dog enjoys a single room there. The workers will feed them and play with them in the activity area.

People can go to the WeChat mini-program — Dog Raising Service of Shenzhen — to get information on the dogs at each dog rescue centre in the city. Dog lovers can choose their favourite dogs and then make a request for their adoption online.
