Today, roller skating is easy and fun. But many years ago, it wasn't easy at all. Before 1750, people never tried skating on wheels. That changed because of a man named Joseph Merlin. Merlin's work was making instruments. In his free time he liked to play the violin. Merlin was a man with many ideas and many dreams. People called him a dreamer

Jay, an American, wanted to write a book about famous churches (教堂)around the world. Firstly, Jay bought a plane ticket and took a trip to Columbus, Ohio, USA, thinking that he would start by working his way across the USA from East to West.
On his first day he was inside a church taking photos when he noticed a golden telephone on the wall with a sign that read "$10,000 per call".
Jay was intrigued so he asked a priest (牧师) what the telephone was used for.
The priest told him that it was a direct (直接的) line to heaven(天堂) and that for $10,000 you could talk to God. Jay thanked the priest and went along his way.
Next stop was in Des Moines, and there at a very large church, he saw the same looking golden telephone with the same sign under it. A nearby nun(修女)told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000 he could talk to God.
Jay decided to travel to Australia to see if they had a similar phone. He arrived at Western Australia, and again, in the church he entered, there was the same looking golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read "40 cents per call."
Somewhat surprised, Jay asked the priest about the sign. 'Father Brian, I travelled all over the world and I saw this same golden telephone in many churches. I know it is a direct line to Heaven, but in all of them price was $10,000 per call. Why is it so cheap here?'
Father(神父)Brian smiled and answered, 'My son, you're in Australia now - this is Heaven, so it's only a local call.'

I'm David. Long ago I came to the city near my hometown to find a job. I met all kinds of difficulties and I used up all my money soon.

It was dark outside one day. I got on a bus quietly. Suddenly, a passenger cried in a loud voice, "someone has stolen my money!" I felt nervous, because his money was in my hand. Some people suggested the driver drive the bus to the police station, but some were against it because they were in a hurry to go back home. The whole bus was very noisy. The driver then stopped the bus by the roadside and turned on the lights. At that time, one passenger said, "Turn off the lights and give the thief(小简)a chance to take out the money."Then the bus got dark.

When I was still thinking about whether to take out the money or not, the lights were turned on again. There was no money on the floor. Someone said, "Give him one more chance." Then the lights were turned off again. I became even more nervous. The lights were turned on again but they got the same result.

Then the passengers fell into an open discussion. Later, someone said, "Give him the last chance!" I felt awakened(醒悟的) and took out all the money when the lights were turned off again.

For many years I have been grateful to those who gave me three chances. When the first and Second chances come, you may not be prepared well or don't have enough courage to act. When the third chance comes, you should know clearly what you should do.

Most of us like to know where we are and where we're going. It can feel strange to be 1 . The words "being lost" make us think of a dark and scary wood or street, 2  that's not always the case.

Once we were on holiday in Venice. Dad planned to go out to take photos early the next morning. Mum wasn't 3 , but I would go with him. That's only because he 4  I could have the biggest bowl of Italian ice cream if I did. 5  else would I get up so early?

We left the hotel and started walking in the 6  streets the next day. When the sun came up, Dad started taking photos and I 7  him.

After about an hour, I turned to Dad and asked, "Where are we?" He said, "I have no idea. "I immediately felt a bit 8 , but Dad just laughed and said, "We're lost!"I told him to 9  his map or phone. He said, "I only brought the 10 . Come on, let's enjoy being lost!" He laughed again.

His laughter 11  me and made me feel safe. I began to 12  that we were lost, and just started watching and taking in everything that was happening around me. 13 , after about four hours of walking around, we were back. Mum asked anxiously(担心地), "Where have you been?"I said with a big 14 , "We got lost!"

These days we 15  get lost with so many things around us — maps, GPS, apps on our phones and so on. But Dad showed me that being lost can sometimes simply be something to enjoy.
