Run for Class President

Two months ago, when our class election (选举) started, I decided to run for class president. I enjoyed speaking in public and got along well with people, so I felt it easy to win. But I was 1 that people would feel bad for me if I lost.

I was busy preparing in the following week. My plan wasn't to make promises to do things I couldn't 2 but to show my class why I wanted to be president. I put up my posters in hallways and in the classroom. I also spent three hours writing my speech, saying that I was the one they could turn to whenever they had a problem. Since I was 3 prepared, I felt that my chances of winning were strong.

However, when I gave my speech on Election Day, the response (反应) wasn't what I had 4. Few people actually listened. When it was my opponent's (对手的) turn, everyone was screaming his name. His speech was short, but all to the point. By then, I realized I should have made mine shorter and clearer.

It was obvious who would 5. For the rest of the day, I felt like it was over. I wanted to just go home and cry, but I made it through.

    My 6 was right: I didn't win.

The next day, people were still talking about the election. I just pretended (假装) not to hear. But later, things got better. People 7 about the election and talked to me just as they did before.

I don't regret putting time and energy into the election because I've learned that things aren't always going the way I expect. And moments of failure like this build 8—since then I've learned to face disappointment and grown stronger.

A long time ago, there lived an old man. He raised the finest horses in all the land. His family was happy and he was rich in friends, too.

One night, the man's prized horse, a big black horse, was lost. The old man was sad. Friends came to say how sorry they were. The old man said only, "Why wouldn't this be good luck?"

Months later, the villagers saw the black horse coming back, leading two white horses. The villagers were happy for the return of the old man's horse and the addition (增加) of two more. The old farmer thanked them for their happiness and said quietly for all to hear, "Could this be a disaster (灾祸)?"

The old man's only son loved horses, so it was natural for the old man to give his son the black horse. The old man began to teach his son to ride. Unluckily, the boy fell off the horse and broke his legs. No one knew if he could ever walk again. Everyone was sad, and came to tell the old man how sad they were. The old man just looked at them and said. "Why wouldn't this be a blessing (福气)?"

In a few weeks, the enemies invaded (侵略) the land. The king sent his soldiers to enlist (征募) one young man from each family to fight against the enemies. When they reached the old man's village, they took one son from each home. At the home of the old man, they found the disabled (残疾的) boy, and they did not take him. As a result, the son stayed away from the war and saved his life.

Charlotte Liebling considers herself a "world watcher"-someone who carefully sees the world around her. When Liebling was in college, she volunteered at a 1 that sold secondhand goods. She saw people bringing in objects to donate, including soft toys.

Liebling knew that the toys held great sentimental(情感的) value for their owners. So she felt 2 when the toys were sold very cheaply, or worse, thrown away.

One night when Liebling got home from work, she started doing some research. She 3 this wasn't happening only in her town. Millions of toys 4 in landfills(垃圾场)every year in the world. "If we can change the idea that soft toys lose their 5 after they've been used, then we can show people that these toys still hold important worth and can be passed on to others. That's how the Loved Before Company 6 ," Liebling says.

When someone wants to donate a soft toy, he can take it to the company. He is encouraged to write down the name of the toy and a story about it This can include the creature's likes and dislikes, and an adventure it's been on. Liebling believes that sharing what makes the toy7 helps new owners understand its value. Then the toy is cleaned, photographed, and packed 8 with its name and story. Every Monday, Liebling 9 the toys on the Loved Before website.

Since the company started in 2019, Loved Before has sold more than 50, 000 soft toys. But the company's 10 is more than "just trying to save some toys from landfills," Liebling says. "We hope to teach kids about the value of loving secondhand things again."
