The journey my daughter Cathy has had with her swimming is as long as it is beautiful.

Cathy suffered some terrible1in her early childhood. After years of treatment, she finally became healthy.

Two years ago, while Cathy was watching the Olympics, a dream came into her sweet little head-to be a swimmer. Last summer, she wanted to2our local swimming team. She practiced hard and finally3it. The team practice, however, was a hard start. She coughed and choked and could hardly pull through her first few weeks. Hearing her coughing seriously one night, I decided to4her from it all. But Cathy woke me up early next morning, wearing her swimsuit ready to go! I told her she shouldn't swim after a whole night's coughing, but she refused to5and insisted she go.

From that day on, Cathy kept swimming and didn't6a single practice. She always tried her best to be the best. My ten-year-old was growing and changing right before my eyes, into this determined human being. There were moments of sadness of course:  often she would be the last swimmer in the race. It was difficult for Cathy to accept that she wasn't a7— ever. But that didn't stop her from trying.

Then came the final awards ceremony(颁奖典礼) at the end of the year. Cathy didn't expect any award but was still there to cheer for her friends. As the ceremony was nearing the end, I suddenly heard the head coach announcing, "The highest honor goes to Cathy!" Looking around, he continued," Cathy has inspired us with her8and warmth.9skills and talents bring great success, the most valuable asset(财富)one can hold is the heart."

It was the greatest10of my daughter's life. With all she had been through in her ten years, this was the hour of true success.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One early morning, I 1 a call for a taxi. When I arrived at the building, it was 2:30 a.m. and I found the building was dark except for the only light in a first floor window.

Many drivers would just shout once or twice and then drove away, but I thought this 2 might need my help. So I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a 3, elderly voice. After a long time, the door opened. A small old man showed up before me, 4a small bag. He kept thanking me for my 5. “It's nothing,” I told him.

“Oh, you're such a good man.” He said. When we got into the taxi, he gave me a (an) 6, and then asked, “Could you drive through the city center?”

“But it wasn't the 7way.” I answered quickly. “Oh, I'm in no hurry.” He said. “I'm on my way to a hospital. I don't have any family left. The 8 says I don't have much time left.

I 9 started the taxi and shut off the meter(计程器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city center. He showed me the building where he once worked. We drove 10 the church where he got married. He would never forget that happy moment. Sometimes he'd ask me to slow down in front of a building and would sit 11the darkness for a long time, saying nothing. When the sun began to rise, we drove in silence to the address he had given me. When we arrived,12 without thinking, I gave him a big hug. “You gave an old man a little moment of 13. Thank you!” He said with tears in his eyes.

I was completely lost in thought for the rest of the day. What would happen if I had refused to do14 I did? We always think that there are no 15 moments in our lives, but great moments are just in what others may think small and unimportant ones!

The day before my daughter Norah's fourth birthday, I picked her up from preschool. On the way, she said, “I like old people best because they walk slowly like I walk slowly and they have soft skin like I have soft skin.”What she said marked a 1beginning.

The following day—her birthday—again on the way home, she asked 2 we could stop at the store to buy cakes for her. How could I say3 to a birthday girl? After paying for the bill, I noticed that Norah was standing up in the cart,4announcing, “Hi, old person! It's my birthday today!” However, the old man in front of her didn't show he was5 by my talkative child. He 6 with a smile, “Well, little lady! And how old are you today?” After a few minutes' chat, Norah offered to take a photo with the old man called Mr. Dan, his expression changed from surprised to delighted. We exchanged our phone numbers. There was magic happening in the store that day, and we could 7 feel it.

During our first visit in Mr. Dan's home, We walked with him to his front door. He pulled out a knife and 8the only blooming red rose. He spent ten minutes cutting every thorn(刺)9 the stem(茎)before handing it to his new friend. Norah keeps that rose, now10as a bone, under her pillow for a long time.

After 12 recent visit, he said that he had 13 had a whole night's sleep since his wife died. “Norah has healed me since meeting her.” he said. That left me 14 and my eyes wet with tears. Somehow, their hearts and souls seem to recognize each other from long ago. Sometimes talking to strangers can 15 beautiful new beginnings.

"Don't forget to study for the Chinese history test on Friday," Mrs. Green said to the class. Julie closed her book and sighed (叹息). Julie was a perfect monitor and could organize all kinds of activities. However, she was 1 in history.

The following day, she went to the library and tried remembering all the facts and data (数据). 2 it was useless. Just then Julie looked up and she found Maria from 3 class was seated at a nearby table.

Julie joined Maria who was sitting with some cards and some coloured pencils. Each card 4 a colourful picture. Julie was curious (好奇的), "I thought you were studying history." "You're right. I think I need to be 5 because it's difficult to remember so many things. I like art, and the pictures help me recall facts," Maria said.

"I see," said Julie, with interest. After thinking for a while, an idea came to her mind. She had rich 6 in organizing big events, starting from making small plans step by step. 7 did she connect all of them at last? Mind maps!

"Hey, Maria," said Julie. "How about this: I 8 these history events into different types and use a mind map to connect each type together. And you draw the pictures for these types as their explanation." "That's cool! Let's start right now!" Maria agreed 9 .

"Sure," said Julie. At that time, studying didn't seem so 10 . And what you need to do is to find out what are good at and make full use of it.

Tyler was a troublesome student. He sat in the back row. Every time I asked him to answer questions, he'd reply with a flip(轻率的) answer. If he got it wrong, he would get very angry.

Usually kids could sit quietly in class. However, Tyler was just noisy. One day, Tyler was talking while I was teaching. I said to him, "Tyler, why not join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?" He got up from his chair, pushed it over, and shouted something I can't remember. I sent him to the office and he received a week's out-of-school punishment.

The week was a wonderful time for me, but when it came to an end, I began to feel worried. So I came up with a plan. On the day of his return, I told him I wanted to start over with him. If he felt like he was going to lose control in class, he could step outside the door for a moment.

From then on, Tyler was a changed student in my classroom. In fact he was a smart child and he even stopped a fight between two students one day. And he never used the privilege(特权) to leave the class for a moment. I believe that just letting him decide for himself made all the difference.

When the year was over, he wrote me a thank-you note about how good the year had been for him. I still have it today and find it very moving to reread when I get worried about teaching.
