    An old man was going home late one night with his horse and cart after a day's hard work. When he was not far away from his house, the light on the cart went out. He tried but could not repair it. He was near his home, and so he went along the road without a light. When a policeman saw this, he stopped the old man.

    "Where is your light?" asked the policeman. "No man may take a cart along the road at night without a light. You know that. You have broken the law." "I had a light, but it has just gone out," said the old man.

    "I don't believe that story. What's your name and where do you live?" asked the policeman. "Please don't write down my name," said the old man. "My home is just there. You can see it from here. I had a light nearly the whole way."

    "You came all the way without a light. What's your name?"

    The old man quickly took the policeman's hand and put it down on the top of the light. The light was still hot and burnt the policeman's hand. The policeman jumped and he was very angry. "Now, what do you think?" said the old man. "Did I come all the way without a light?"

    Jack is in Grade Three now. He is a polite boy and studies hard. He is good at his lessons and can answer all the questions in class. His teachers and classmates like him except Henry. They're deskmates. Henry likes playing and often fails the exams. His father is a dentist (牙医) and makes a lot of money. The boy thinks he lives in the richest family in the town. So he looks down upon (瞧不起) others and laughs at them. Of course he has few friends.

    Jack is busy all the time. His father is a shoemaker. The man works hard but he still can't buy enough food for the family. He tells Jack to help him after school, so Jack has to do all his homework at school.

    One summer afternoon, on his way home, Jack met his sister Lily.

    The girl carried a heavy box in her arms without wearing shoes. Jack carried it for her. Henry saw them and said to Jack, "You father is a shoemaker, but your sister has no shoes!"

    "I don't think it's strange," replied Jack. "Your father is dentist, but your little sister has no teeth!"

    One morning there was a loud knock at Dean Swift's door. The servant(佣人)opened it. A man who was outside handed her a fine duck and said, "Here's a present for Dean. It's from Mr Boyle." Then, without another word, he walked away.

    Mr. Boyle was a sporty neighbour. He liked reading Dean Swift's books and sending him presents. The second time, the man brought a quail(鹌鹑). "Here's something else for Dean," he said and threw it into the servant's arms.

    "That man has no manners," the servant told Dean.

    "The next time he comes," said Dean, "let me know."

    It was not long before the man came with another present. Dean went to the door.

    "Here's a rabbit from Mr. Boyle, "said the man.

    "See here, "said Dean." That is not the way to deliver a message here. Just walk inside and make believe(假装)that you were Dean Swift. I will show you."

    "I'll agree to that, "said the man, and he walked inside. Dean took the rabbit and knocked gently at the door.

    The door was opened by the man. Dean said, "If you please, sir, Mr Boyle wishes you to accept this fine rabbit."

    "Oh, thank you, "said the man very politely. Then, taking out his wallet, he offered Dean some money." And here is something for your trouble."

    The lesson in manners was not forgotten. After that, the man was very polite when he brought presents. And Dean also took the hint(暗示).He always remembered to give the man a tip for his trouble.

A boy finds a penguin (企鹅) at his door. He doesn't know where it comes from, but it always follows (跟随) him everywhere. The boy thinks it must be lost. So he goes to the Lost and Found Office, but no one is looking for a penguin. That night, the boy can't sleep well. Because he wants to help the penguin, but he isn't sure how to help.

The next morning he finds in a book that penguins usually come from the South Pole (南极). So he takes his small boat out to sea with the penguin. It takes them many days and many nights to the south. He tells stories to the penguin on the way to the South Pole, they are happy all the time. Finally, they get to the South Pole. When the boy says goodbye and leaves, he finds the penguin sad, staying there.

The boy feels strange on his way home. No one listens to his stories. Then he thinks carefully and knows that maybe the penguin isn't lost. It just feels lonely (孤单的). He quickly turns the boat around and gets back to the South Pole as fast as he can. But he can't find the penguin. 

When he gets home, the penguin is at his door again! The two friends meet each other happily!

The Browns live in the southeast of China. It is on the Pacific coast. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(compare) to other places, it is very hot in summer and warm in winter. But there are typhoons (台风) from time {#blank#}2{#/blank#} time in summer. Mr Brown likes swimming very much. Every weekend, he goes swimming in the West River near his home. The West River is very wide. Each time he swims a little longer than last time {#blank#}3{#/blank#} he always wants to challenge (挑战) himself. And then he takes photos of his success. There are a lot of {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(photo) in his WeChat Moments (微信朋友圈). 

One day, Mr Brown planned {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(swim) in the West River. But his wife said, "Don't go out. There {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(be) a typhoon in a few minutes." "Don't worry. I can swim at any time." Then he went swimming in the West River.{#blank#}7{#/blank#}, when he swam for about ten minutes, he was pushed by something unknown. He was so scared that he hurried to swim back to the bank (河岸). But he couldn't. He thought, "Probably, I won't swim to {#blank#}8{#/blank#} opposite bank. Then I {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(die) here in one minute because of the unknown power." Luckily, he succeeded in swimming from the east coast to the west coast. "It is the {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(good) time to take photos and share them in WeChat Moments. But next time, I won't do it again on a typhoon day!" said Mr Brown.
