One day, a small business owner decided to1 because he'd had enough of the endless work, enough of the lack of payback, enough of the uncomfortable loneliness.

He went into the forest to have one last talk to the wise man he met before. "Wise man," he said. "Can you give me one good reason why I shouldn't give up?"

The answer surprised him. "Look 2 you," the wise man said. "Do you see the fern(蕨类植物) and the bamboo?"

    "Yes," the man said.

"When I planted the fern and the bamboo, I took very good care of them. So both of them got enough food and water. They enjoyed    3 in spring and were protected from the storms in autumn. The fern quickly grew from the earth. Its large long leaves soon 4  the forest floor. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed (种子). 5 I did not give up on the bamboo. In the second year, the fern grew even better than before but nothing came from the bamboo seed. In year three there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not give up. In year four, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed. Still I would not give up and I waited. "

"Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout(芽) came out from the earth. Compared to the fern, it was 6. But day by day the sprout grew bigger. Within six months, the sprout had reached a height of 100 feet. It had spent the five years growing roots(根). Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to stay alive."

"Do you know, young man, that all this time you have been struggling, you have been growing? Grow the roots that you need to produce your 7."

"Don't compare yourself to others. The bamboo has a different purpose from the fern, but they both make the forest beautiful. Your time will come. You will rise high."

The small business owner thought this was good advice. He left the forest to practise what the wise man had told him.

When it seems like nothing is happening in your life, even with all the work that you're doing, remember that you're probably growing roots, not fruit. Being hard-working and 8, one day not long from now, you will have a great harvest.

Frustration (挫折感) is a feeling that is common to nearly everyone: so much to do, so little time. Another year gone by with nothing done, you find all last year's resolutions haven't been realized. Neither did you run that marathon (马拉松) , nor did you learn the guitar. But never mind, things will be different in a new year. This time you will try to finish them through the wind and rain, right? Sadly in Mid-February, 80% of you will have already given up your plans.

I have always considered the word perseverance (毅力) means such serious suffering (痛苦) and loneliness. Luckily, there is a simple way to achieve success by changing your daily habits.

In his book, Atomic Habits, author James Clear tells the way of keeping perseverance. He suggests that, if you truly wish to make big changes to your life, the best way is not by making big New Year's resolutions, but by making small changes to your daily habits.

Getting a small change day by day can help you achieve your big goal. In short, you are your habits and if you have some respectable habits, you will achieve great things. Start slowly and don't worry about others'opinions. You are in competition with yourself. So if at first you don't succeed, fail and fail again, make some changes and you'll succeed.

 阅读短文,从方框内所给的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,其中有一项多余的选项。

Recharge (充电) Your Body's Battery

My phone is showing that little red low-battery sign. What if I didn't recharge it—no, that would stress me out. But what if I took a few minutes to recharge myself—yes, that would help. But how? {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

Tell yourself the truth.

When something stressful happens, we often can't help taking a deep breath at first. But we control what happens next. It's possible to work with our stress, rather than against it. Thank it and remind yourself: "{#blank#}2{#/blank#}"

Turn your attention to joy.

To protect energy stores, turn your attention to being present. Focus on what you can feel grateful for. Smiling can reduce stress. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Plant something in your day that you look forward to.

Work your stress out.

You might think all your feelings live in your brain. But in fact, we feel them with our whole bodies. Doing exercise can help your body reduce stress. It can change how you feel. Also, heating up and cooling down, like taking a shower, may cheer you up.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

Being in crowded and busy places sends our bodies signs of danger. We can recharge our batteries with green space time—look for a park, gardens or plants to calm our bodies and minds.

Life is short. It's even shorter living on half a battery. We can break our daily stress habits and create more energy.

A. My body is producing energy to help me deal with it.

B. Relax yourself in green.

C. My energy is running out.

D. Here are a few ways to recharge yourself.

E. Joy can recharge us.

That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home at I am in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away,I was still learning my lines(台词). I was having trouble dealing with my part- time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.

As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away any possible robbers(强盗). Very few people were still out except a few sad- looking homeless people under blankets(毯子).

About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.

Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.

Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside," Alisa Camacho?"I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red- haired man with a cheerful look in his eyes." Is this what you' re looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape.

It was nearly 3 am by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life.

 阅读短文,然后根据其内容选择最佳答案。

There was a park near my home. But I didn't go there very often because many people said there was nothing special. One afternoon I went into the park. I walked quickly because there wasn't much to see. I walked for some time and found myself standing in front of two paths(小路), " ▲ " I asked myself. I looked at one path, and then the other. I found that the two paths were different from each other.

The left one was wide and clean. There were lots of flowers on both sides of the path. Though the flowers weren't very beautiful, they made me feel good. Then I looked at the right one. The path was different from the left one. It didn't look nice. It looked as if it had not been cleaned for months. For a long time, I couldn't decide which path to go along.

After a while, a strange feeling made me follow the dirty path. It wasn't nice, but I didn't want to give up. At last, I came to the end of the path. To my surprise, there was a small garden. It was beautiful. I thought it was the nicest part of the park.

Later, I told the others what I had seen in the park, but they just smiled at me without saying a word. I knew they didn't believe me. They couldn't even remember that path because it was so small.

My trip to the park that day made me learn something about life. Don't be afraid to choose a different path. You may get a big surprise!
