Mei refused at the risk(风险) of his life and from then on he did not appear on stage during the war. His decision to give up made him poor until the war ended in 1945.

    Mei Lanfang was the first artist to introduce Beijing opera to foreign countries. He had his opera tours abroad, and people in other countries started to understand this kind of play. After 1949, he became the symbol of Beijing opera through making a great contribution to the development of Beijing opera.
