Henry was an office worker in a big city. He worked very hard and enjoyed travelling during his holidays.

    He usually went to the seaside, but one year he saw an advertisement in a newspaper." Enjoy country life. Spend a few weeks at West Hill Farm. Good food. Fresh air. Walking. Fishing. Cheap and interesting."

    "This sounds a good idea," he thought. "I'll spend a month at West Hill Farm. I think I can enjoy walking and fishing. They'll make a change from sitting by the seaside and swimming."

    He wrote to the farmer. In the letter he said that he would like to spend the whole July there. Then on the first day of July, he left for West Hill Farm.

    But four days later, he returned home.

    "What was wrong with West Hill Farm?" his best friend, Ed. asked him. "Didn't you enjoy country life?"

    "Country life was very good," Henry said. "But there was another problem."

    "Oh. What?"

    "Well," he said, "on the first day a sheep died, and we had roast mutton (烤羊肉) for dinner."

    "What's wrong with that?" Ed asked. "Fresh meat is the best."

    "I know, but on the second day a cow died, and we had roast beef for dinner."

    "Lucky you!"

    "You don't understand," Henry said. "on the third day a pig died and we had roast pork for dinner."

    "A different kind of meat every day," Ed said loudly, "and you are complaining!"

    "Let me finish, "Henry said. "on the fourth day the farmer. died, and I didn't dare (敢) stay for dinner!"

    It was nearly seven o'clock, when a man walked into a bar, ordered a drink and turned to watch the television.

    The seven o'clock news was on and it was showing a man standing on top of a tall building. He was looking down at the crowd of people below.

    On the ground, a police officer with a megaphone(扩音器)was trying to tell him not to jump.

    "Let's talk about your problem," the police officer was saying. "Perhaps we can help you."

    The man turned to the bartender(酒吧侍者)and said, "I bet you a hundred dollars he doesn't jump.

    The bartender looked at him. "You're offering me a hundred dollars if he jumps? Is that right?"

    "Yes. I don't think he'll jump."

    The bartender smiled. "OK. You've got a bet."

    The man turned back to the TV and watched it carefully. The bartender, however, did not seem to be very interested. He continued washing glasses and serving the other customers.

    Then, after about five minutes, the man on the building threw himself off the building and fell to the ground.

    The man in the bar turned to the bartender.

    "He jumped," he said. "You win."

    He held out a hundred dollar bill to the bartender, but the bartender would not take it.

    "I can't take your money," he said. "I knew I couldn't lose. That story was on the six o'clock news. I saw him jump."

    "Well, yes, so did I," the man said, "but I didn't think he'd do such a stupid thing twice."

One day,Jack drove his new car very happily down a street. Suddenly from his car came a terrible sound. He felt1 ,so he stopped his car and looked around. A child2 beside his car with a few stones in his hand. He jumped out of the car and found a dent(凹痕) in the door. He was so angry that he caught3 child and shouted at him,"Who are you? Why did you hit my new car4 a stone?"

"Please , sir , please ... I am sorry! But I didn't know 5 else to do," said the child. "I threw the stone because I wanted you6 me. I need your help!" Tears ran down the7 face. He said,"My brother fell out of his wheelchair and was almost under it. He is hurt but I can do nothing8 he is too heavy for me. Could you give me a hand to get him back into his wheelchair?"

After hearing this,Jack hurried to help. He lifted(抬起)the child's brother gently back into his wheelchair. He looked over the boy9 to make sure that he was OK. Then he watched the child push his brother towards10 home. Suddenly the child turned around and bowed(鞠躬) to Jack. Jack felt pleased and excited. He looked at the dent in his car and smiled.

An old woman in a wheelchair moved into the apartment next door to Betsy's. "Mom, let's go to say {#blank#}1{#/blank#} to our new neighbor," Betsy said. "Why don'tyou give her some time to get settled (安顿好)?" her mom {#blank#}2{#/blank#} .

The next morning they visited their new neighbor. The lady invited {#blank#}3{#/blank#}in and said her name was Emily Harris. "Please forgive the way the house looks," said Ms. Harris. "Being in a wheelchair makes it less {#blank#}4{#/blank#} for me to put things away." Betsy and her mom stayed only for a short time. Betsy's mom said, " {#blank#}5{#/blank#} you ever need anything, let us know." "Thanks so much," said Ms. Harris {#blank#}6{#/blank#} .

The next day, Betsy went to visit Ms. Harris again. The {#blank#}7{#/blank#} was open, so she looked in but only to see Ms. Harris on the ground next to her wheelchair. She {#blank#}8{#/blank#} to Ms. Harris. "I think I broke my arm," said Ms. Harris. Betsy called for {#blank#}9{#/blank#} ambulance (救护车). While Ms. Harris was not at home, Betsy decided to help put things away for her.

When Ms. Harris returned home, she was surprised by Betsy's hard work.

"You are a very kind girl," she said. "I'm so lucky to have bought this house{#blank#}10{#/blank#}    yours!" Betsy smiled and said, "Welcome to the neighborhood!"

Kate Sessions was interested in trees when she was a child. While other girls didn't want to get their hands dirty, little Kate enjoyed picking up branches(树枝) and fruits in the forest. Kate also danced and sang songs happily there. She felt the trees were her friends. She loved the way they grew toward the sky and how their branches stretched(延伸) to get the light. Kate thought the trees were like big umbrellas that protected her and the animals, birds and plants that lived in the forest. Kate smiled as she walked among the trees, enjoying the sounds of birds. Not everyone felt at home in the forest,but Kate did.

Kate learned well in school. She learned how to read and write. She remembered the stories she read. But best of all, she liked studying wind and rain, plants and trees, especially trees. At that time, very few girls chose to study science, but Kate chose to learn ecology(生态学) because of her love for it. She still tried to make her dream come true as a person who knew much about trees. 

After leaving school, Kate came to San Diego, a city with few green plants and bad air. Kate made a decision to better the air of the city, so she brought different kinds of trees to San Diego and called on her friends to plant trees with her. With hard work, they made Balboa Park in San Diego a beautiful and fantastic garden. Kate is also known as the" Mother of Balboa Park". 

 Welcome to junior high! This is our new school. It is very big and it has a long {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (历史). There are {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (十) buildings, three dinning halls and a playground. We {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (需要) to learn more subjects. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (生物) is my favorite subject. We have many science {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (实验室). In {#blank#}6{#/blank#} !事实), our school also has a lot of activities to make us be interested in study. Every Monday, we should wear school uniforms. I like our {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (红色的)T-shirts. And we can also wear our {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (央克衫). At school we can make a lot of friends and learn to be {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (有礼貌的) to each other. Our teachers hope we should {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (努力) our best to study. We are going to have a good time in junior high.
